In the coming months, Kia (with a single product) will overtake Tata Motors' total sales. Make your own judgments!

6000 units of Creta. Haven't some customers heard of Seltos or is the dealer stock just going up?
Alturas G4 at 71 units (Endeavour at 572 and Fortuner at 878). Brand matters.
Refreshed old Duster still does 967 units only.
Harrier at 635. Compass at 605. Seltos at 6236. Hector at 2018. Harrier has hurriedly buried itself. Bye Harrier... err Tata Harrier!
Triber at 2490 units. I like the way the car looks. Its quite well proportioned. Lets see if 1.0L petrol engine will help it keep it going.

If we do a YTD comparison of 2019 vs 2018, following are the insights:

August 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-ytd-analysis.png

1. YTD B2 segment is down by 22% - primarily due to lower sales of segment toppers such as Swift, Grand i10 & Elite i20
2. YTD C2 segment is down by 10%, within C2, Hatchback is down by 55%, Sedan is down by 31% & SUV is up by 1% - due to lower volumes on Vitara Breeza, City, Creta, Scorpio Verna & EcoSport
3. YTD B1 segment is up by 2% - driven by WagonR, Celerio & Santro
4. YTD Utility segment is up by 4%, within Utility, MUV is up by 4% & SUV is down by 20% - due to surge in Eeco, Ertiga & Marazzo
5. YTD C1 segment is down by 28% - due to fall in demand for Dzire, Etios & Xcent
6. YTD Segment A is down by 30% - due to huge volume drop for Alto, Kwid & RediGo
7. YTD D1 segment is down by 10%, within D1, MUV is down by 21%, Sedan is up by 28% & SUV is up by 3% - due to volume drop on Innova & XUV
8. YTD D2 segment is down by 8%, within D2, Sedan is down by 5% & SUV is down by 9% - due to volume drop on Fortuner
9. YTD Premium segment is up by 112%, driven by Hyundai - Kona

In the C2 segment, sedans have sold 6079 in August, 77589 YTD. SUV/MUV combined sales in August 55395, YTD 458269.
The C2 segment is now ~28% of the overall market.

Looks like Hyundai Kona's pre-launch yearly target of ~125 units is met in the third month itself. Way to go!!!

I don't think the XUV300 is grossly overpriced. It is true that it is more expensive than the competition but then you also get a car with more power and better features. Mahindra has placed it in a sub segment between the Venue and the Creta especially the W8(0) variant.

Regarding overpriced cars failing, it would be one of the happiest days of my life when post BS6 Innova and the Fortuner are shown the door by Indian buyers after their already inflated prices inflate further by 15-20% as mentioned by Toyota senior management.

Figure the Venue is eating into the Creta's share but overall, it seems like people are cross-shopping with the Brezza as well. Surprised to see the Fortuner numbers go down.

Stats for C2 segment Sedan & SUV:

Breeza...somewhat recovering when compared with previous month.

Venue marginally down compared with previous month.

Seltos the game has just begun...it will be interesting to see how does the new Creta will stand against Seltos.

TATA's tail is on fire!! Their best performer Tiago is down to 3k, Nexon to 2k. New launches (Altroz, Cassini) doesn't seem to be path-breaking or bringing novelty to the table. They need to bring their existing cars up to date in terms of features and need to fix the niggles & issues reported. Tough times ahead for Tata.

Kia starts with a bang. Need to see if they can sustain these numbers after the initial months.

MG Hector wins this round (Hector- 2018, Harrier- 635, Compass- 605). Eagerly waiting for the T-bhp review to see how it actually fairs.

I think September numbers for MG will hover around 3000 units, which is the maximum capacity it has currently. Let's hope their plans of a second shift pulls off.

I've been waiting for that to happen for a long time. But sadly, people are willing to pay 40 lakhs for the Fortuner, which is grossly overpriced. And I'm sure they won't bother to pay 42 or 43 lakhs after BS6.

When you're in that territory, value for money doesn't count. It's sentiment.

Interesting thing I noted -

This is the closest these three would have fought I imagine.
  • Hyundai Verna - 1597
  • Maruti Ciaz - 1596
  • Honda City - 1593

As of July 2019, Diesel usage growth has shown a decline.

However, usage growth of petrol wasn't low.

Petrol consumption too wasn't very low.

IMHO, much of the correction in PVs can be arrested if manufacturers offered base variants at very very low and affordable prices and higher variants with 7+yr warranties, AMC and negotiate a good insurance package.

Anyway, It's not like car makers won't know the right strategy of how to provide additional value without diluting the brand. They just have to decide if they want to work hard & make things work or simply sell lesser cars deliberately.

Hector & Seltos are examples of products with exemplary features drawing customers towards it with no effect of GST / economic slowdown affecting it anyway.

So the real question is, whilst a certain percentage of population are waiting for GST / BS6 / EV vs ICE debate, others are tilting towards feature loaded cars which surely Kia & MG have managed to cater to, is it the combined effects that are affecting the slowdown or is it that customers are bored seeing the same cars with so called facelifts with not much changes introduced in them?

Hope to see the sales to grow in the coming months and seriously wish those hands that have lost jobs to get back into the prod lines and provide to their families.

Who are these 4 guys buying Quanto !! Need a round of applause
On a serious note, are these any display vehicles/test cars or someone just erred on the data side ? It's not the 1st time when we have seen few units of a discontinued model show up in dealer dispatches. Any idea ?

Wow, I can only see one trend - gloom and despair in the auto industry. Seems like massive losses to me. Global slowdown to blame? Is the big recession just around the corner?

I don't think it is going to improve this year either.

Pretty sure this cannot continue. It's not just the manufacturers, dealers, OEM components manufacturers suffering. It's the government suffering as well. LEss sales means lower GST collection, lower fuel consumed, less road tax collection, lower insurance purchases, lesser bank loans for autos.

Something's gotta give either the Government or some manufacturers might be forced to consolidate products line up.

But there is another PoV which is very interesting. Take a look at the segment wise sales below:

The segments which have taken a huge hit are mainly the A, B1, B2, C1. These have seen sales drop anywhere between 50% to 30%. However the story up the ladder is very different. C2, D1, D2, Utility and premium have hardly seen a big drop. The C2 is not too bad at less than 20% drop YoY and month on month is also up and down.

The utility, D1 and D2 has barely dropped by 10% overall.

So basically it's the lower end of the spectrum that is taking the hit whereas post 10L market is still not that bad.

So the upcoming GST cut if at all it happens will benefit these more than the lower segment volume players as the amount of cut will be greater on Rs.10L+ cars vs the 4-7L.

I think there is a typo in the excell sheet. It should read as the Nuvosport since the Quanto was discontinued almost three and a half years ago after M&M launched its refreshed avatar the Nuvosport.

It's very much possible that the company had some unsold old stock lying in their stockyard which was dispatched to the dealers when those 4 brave souls decided to put their money on it
