Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

How hard is it for companies to come up with a good name for a car.

"Boss we need a nice catchy name for the car"
"Hmm, we have an suv named T I G U A N, that was a good one"
"I've got it boss! The all new....T A I G U N"
"Wow! so original."

With that said, the car looks great, it will be superior in every way than the current Brezza/Creta lot. The success will depend on the pricing, which as we can guess will be a notch higher than the average segment prices.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

It seems VW is using the Maruti nomenclature in naming its compact crossover, Maruti named its compact crossover as Vitara Brezza similar to its global offering Vitara and in a similar fashion, VW is naming its compact crossover as Taigun similar to Tiguan.

I am completely and utterly baffled at this recent trend of auto manufactures showcasing cars in India, which have already launched in tons of countries abroad, and will launch in India close to two years later! Really dont get the logic at all. Customers' interest is whetted for months, and then the car is unveiled with a launch in latter half of 2021. Instead of launching it when the interest is fresh and when the product is not overshadowed by the various launches from other manufacturers which are bound to happen over the course of the next year and a half.

The VW Taigun has been around from a long time and its not a rehash of the word Tiguan. In fact, the Taigun was always a smaller cousin of the Tiguan and the Touareg, and I remember seeing its pictures way back when it was available overseas.

It is just that VW has decided to use the name for the Indian iteration of T-Cross. Not sure if the actual Taigun is still being sold in overseas markets though.

TAIGUN is different in dimensions to the EU T Cross, will have lots of localized components including changes to the chassis. Hence the period from now to early 2021 we will see the car in production form undergoing tests.

Agree it is late to the market, but the cars have a lot of potential if priced rightly.

While I understand that there is a lot of localization to be undertaken for the Indian market, if it were up to me, I would probably have done the unveil closer to the launch - maybe a few months off, rather than the better part of two years. I am sure SUVs will still be relevant when this is finally launched, but the interest of customers may be weaned away from this car to later and potentially better, more relevant and capable products.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

Design is typical VW which will age like a wine. Good that they did not adopt the new design language of some manufacturers by making a big mouth grill and slit/thin headlamps.

The TSI engine should entertain the enthusiast and be practical at the same time.

Knowing VW they will milk this for another decade by doing decent monthly numbers but cannot really complain as their product does seem well engineered to perform and look timeless for a long period of time.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

It appears to me that the Taigun unveiled (unlike the regular T-Cross) is within spitting distance of the T-Roc's dimensions, especially in length and wheelbase. The interiors and design language (logo included) of the Taigun also make the T-Roc appear quite last generation.

Wonder how the customer will perceive the T-Roc which is expected to be priced a whole segment higher; as a car from a segment above

You are right. I was wondering the same while watching the live stream earlier. The T-Roc appeared slightly wider, but that's about it. I checked Volkswagen's official website and the Taigun's length and wheelbase are almost identical to the T-Roc. With the 1.5 TSI being hinted for the Taigun as well, the CBU T-Roc is going to be a tough sell unless priced very attractively.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

TAIGUN will get in lower trims the 1.0L TSI engine.

This compact, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol motor develops 115hp.

For reaching to a wider spectrum of the masses, due to cost reasons( and reliability) the transmission will be a 6 MT and 6 AT combination. Both transmissions are being looked upon for localization.

The top-end Taigun, which gets a 130hp 1.5 TSI engine, will retain the 7-speed DSG gearbox for a more performance-oriented driving experience.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

VW SA releases specs and pricing for new entry-level 70 kW T-Cross for S Africa.

This could also be for the entry level Taigun as well.

T-Cross 1,0 TSI :

Quote:
the Wolfsburg-based firm’s turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, but here it’s been detuned to deliver 70 kW and 175 N.m to the front axle via a five-speed manual (rather than seven-speed dual-clutch) gearbox. As a result, the obligatory sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes a claimed 11,5 seconds, with the crossover topping out at 180 km/h. VW claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5,0 L/100 km
- T-Cross 1,0 TSI 70 kW Comfortline makes do with drum brakes at the rear but does ride on 16-inch “Belmont” alloys as standard.

-features VW’s “Composition Colour” infotainment system with a 6,5-inch display and App Connect.

-Other highlights include six airbags, electronic stability control, LED daytime running lights, foglamps (front and rear) a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control and parking sensors (fore and aft).

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

Volkswagen India's Instagram Q&A session showed that there will be an option of a DSG for the upcoming Taigun which indirectly confirms that there will be a 1.5 TSI I suppose considering that the 1.0 TSI will get the 6 speed MT and the Torque Converter gearbox.
Whether that engine will be a detuned version of the 1.5 TSI is anybody's guess.

Attaching a screenshot of the same.

Re: India spec Volkswagen T-Cross to be unveiled at 2020 Auto Expo. EDIT: Named Taigun

Lets hope the Taigun retains most of the “gun”(attributes) of its “Tai”s ( elder sisters) and not present itself as a watered down TRoc.
The Indian market isn’t exactly thirsty for a bland European crossover whatever be its pedigree.
