Wholesale number is higher than retail numbers in most months but it averages out in long term. Gh
I hope the Infosys latest accusations do make my point valid

This will be the correct way. You can make, and supply your dealerships, umpteen cars. However, I feel at the end of the day the nos. must match

Wholesale VS Retail figures
What the numbers don't tell

Unlike the global norm, Indian vehicle manufacturers report only their wholesale figures, which represent dispatches from manufacturing plants to dealers. Retail sales figures reflect actual purchases by buyers and there can often be a mismatch between the two sets of numbers, with wholesale not being a true representation of consumer sentiment.

Quote:

While declaring sales numbers for October, most auto companies mentioned that their retail sales had surged significantly, without declaring actual retail numbers. All these companies reported negative wholesale numbers for the month, with the exception of Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti, Mahindra and Tata
Now advocate release of retail figures

Tata Motors took the lead in this financial year to declare retail numbers quarterly to SIAM.

Mahindra & Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bhargava have joined the ranks of auto industry captains now advocating the release of retail monthly sales numbers over wholesale data, a view that’s slowly veering towards a consensus in an otherwise fractious community.

This comes as the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the industry’s apex body, is yet to take a firm stand on this issue.

Quote:

Analysts argue that the primary reason companies are now clamouring for putting out retail numbers is that, given the current auto industry slowdown, the actual sale of cars to customers at dealerships is a better yardstick of consumer sentiment. Sceptics, however, point out that this was never an issue during times of growth.

I had to do a double-take when I read this. WOW!

https://www.business-standard.com/ar...0200769_1.html

Quote:
Despatches 5.99 lakh two wheelers in October 2019

Hero MotoCorp reported record retail sales in the just concluded festive period - starting from Navratra till after Diwali. The company recorded Highest-ever retail sales in any single calendar month - 12.84 lakhs in October 2019.
They sold almost TWICE more than production. Has the Indian Auto Industry got rid of the entire inventory build-up thanks to the slowdown in a single month?

Re: FADA tells SIAM to calculate market share on the basis of actual car registrations

Auto majors welcome retail sales numbers, SIAM to stay with wholesale numbers:

Maruti Suzuki:
Quote:
This not only shows true consumer buying sentiments, but that inventory levels are at an all-time low.
Toyota Kirloskar:
Quote:
We also rely much more on retail numbers and track it internally. On a daily basis, we track enquiries generated, orders received and retail sales done.

Interestingly for the last quarter, wholesale was 25% lower than retail sales and this was a conscious effort to map the dealers during such unprecedented times
Hyundai Motors:
Quote:
Wholesale and retail should ultimately match and companies should maintain a balance between the two, which is the case in July with nearly similar numbers
Quote:
Once markets opened up, dealers were trying to liquidate inventory, thereby increasing retail sales and reducing stocks

SIAM has a different view.

SIAM president, Rajan Wadhera:

Quote:
SIAM will continue relying on wholesale numbers as Vaahan numbers are not authentic, has a lag and does not capture data from three states. He sees higher retail sales due to personal mobility and expects production to normalise over the next three months.
