Rumour: Maruti Suzuki recall for steering column issue

Maruti document claims silent replacement of faulty steering column in Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Vitara Brezza and S Cross

The document mentions do it discreetly and maintain confidentiality. In today's date and time, such a stupid mistake

Do you know the date of this circular ? I have come across one which was communicated by Maruti to dealers in July, that covers more chassis numbers.

@Leo
What is the date of the circular? My Baleno Alpha DDis Chassis No. falls within the range.

I'm not sure about the date of this circular as I got it as a whatsapp forward. Initially I didn't put it since Doc(Naren) handles such notices nicely. But then I noticed a not so clear pic and hence posted a better one.

Shashi

I think thats because it doesn't seem like a safety issue. It seems like a noise/heavier steering scenario. Something that might not happen with all cars with that unit and something all owners might not notice at all.

Calling it a recall would ensure a huge number of people flocking the workshops for free replacement. Something MSIL is clearly not keen on. At the same time - a proactive notification to workshops telling them to replace the R&P systems without charge to the customers is a good gesture I think. Workshops could very well have simply charged the customers for a replacement if the car is out of warranty. Customers wouldn't have had a choice other than paying up anyway. This is a sort of "golden-middle" that MSIL has tried to achieve.

"Confidentiality" indeed is stupid now a days. I think MSIL would have anticipated this being leaked anyway.

What's a sticky steering wheel ? Well, has this something to do with the pathetic return-to-centre action of the steering wheel of the new swift's ? Case in point- I'm driving on highway and if I turn the steering, say 5 degree, to the right or left, it stays that way and expects me to bring it to the centre position !

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki recall for steering column issue

I have been facing this problem recently and today went to MSSD Naraina (Delhi) for 70K service. They all seems to be aware of the problem, however didn't accepted over my face. Just now got their call back that they will replace the entire Steering Column Assembly as a goodwill gesture, since i am their 15 year old client.

Initially, they hesitated, however when I pushed that they need to give in writing that there is no problem like that - as this is a serious problem and may result in an accident - they are now replacing it.

Can you please describe what exactly is the problem that you were facing? It will help others to act accordingly. Many might think this to be normal steering behaviour.

While driving within City speed limits, i started feeling that even after slight turn or in roundabout, steering was not coming back to its position. I had to pull it thru. Problem was not severe, however may get worse - because in all cars, usually steering comes back easily without much effort to its normal position.

Hope this helps other BHPians. Be safe

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki recall for steering column issue

Are they replacing it for all the vehicles within that chassis range or only if the customer report the problem / the car has the sticky steering wheel problem?

Only if the customer reports the issue. It's not a recall by Maruti.

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki recall for steering column issue

Where do I find the Chassis number ? It's not mentioned anywhere that I can see. I can find the Vin number and engine number. VIN number matches the series but can't proceed. I'm attaching a pic of the metal plate in the door jamb which mentions details, hope one of you guys can help me out. It's a Dzire petrol Vxi

Both VIN number and chassis number are one and the same. Hope this helps.
