September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The SUV space is heating up. MG has sold 2608 units of the Hector. Pretty impressive. MG does not report factory despatches so the number is the retail sales figure. Hopefully all manufacturers will move to the same.

Kia's numbers are great and going forward, i see it stabilising around the 7-10k mark.

There has been an improvement in the numbers of the harrier. It's Fiat that needs to worry about the compass, especially since that's their only car in India, with zero despatches of the linea and Punto.

Honda Civic has also seen some resurgence and their numbers are higher than all the competition.

The Glanza numbers are mind boggling. Don't people really know it's a rebadged Maruti? Or does Toyota reliability have that kind of a pull?

I would really like to know how the S-Presso has been put in the B-1 category? I think it should be in the A segment. Is it because its starting price is higher?

When we compare the Kwid 1.0 to the S-Presso, the price is neck and neck.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

- Maruti

Great show once again, almost 50% market share and 11 out of 20 top selling cars is just Amazing. Ertiga + XL6 is doing 10 K+ and more than double of Innova easily, finally people understanding that Toyota looting them big way. Brilliant packaging by Maruti though in new Ertiga and XL6. S-Presso made good debut, need to see next few months how market responds to this new kid. Wagon-R, Dzire, Swift, Brezza, Baleno doing business as usual and almost back to normal figures amid slowdown. Eeco is real hero, like the scholar kid in the class who never make any noise or any show off at all but still gets good numbers

- Hyundai

Creta finally feeling heat and numbers are down, almost to half. New G-i10, Venue bringing some great numbers for them. i20 still doing great numbers, shows there is still good market for big, premium hatches. Nothing much for Santro, Xcent.

- Tata, Mahindra

Indian pair still struggling to come out of slowdown, especially Tata, sale is 50% down. Not sure why they are not bringing Altroz in, loosing market big way when you see numbers done by Baleno, Swift, i20. Initial hype is gone now and XUV300 coming to some realistic numbers, don't see it going up big way hereon. Scorpio is true legend in Indian market, doing some strong numbers after so many years & amid slowdown. Harrier is struggling now, do something Tata, its a very good product. Also don't close Hexa, it's a brilliant car.

- Renault

Trying hard to stay in market, hope Triber & New Kwid bring them some numbers. Nothing else is selling.

- Honda

More than half of the sell is from Amaze only. BRV is dead, WRV, CIty, Jazz struggling big way. Comparatively Civic doing some better numbers.

- Toyota

All are down, Glanza from Maruti saving them big way in total numbers. Innova is struggling now and almost 50% down from high's. Yaris is dead long back only due to it's steep pricing.

- Kia, MG

Doing some good numbers, especially Kia with Seltos. Interesting to see how these 2 does in coming months.

- Skoda, VW

Nothing much, nothing exciting. Floating in the market for last few years with same cars.

- Nissan, Fiat

On the way to close their operations soon after GM.

- Ford

Doing okay, Ecosport still saving them big way. Endeavour doing some decent numbers for its category. Nothing else.

- Datsun

Still not sure why this company exists at first place. Nissan made big mistake by not getting those cars under their own brand.

- Jeep

Lot of reasons to worry, need to do something.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Some observations from my side

1. Ertiga sees a drop of around 25% compared to last month. XL6 effect?

2. Great show by Triber which almost single handedly takes Renault to 6th position. If it is able to maintain or gain on these numbers then Renault can even aim for the 5th spot.

3. Don't know why Venue is down 15% compared to last month.

4. The S Cross was a regular in the 2k club but now is languishing with around 1k dispatches.

5. Finally we have ZERO dispatches for all the Fiat cars. Does this mean that they have exhausted all their stocks? Time will tell.

6. Jeep needs to do something ASAP for the Titanic that the Compass has become. With no new products in the near future things are certainly looking bleak for Jeep.

7. Only 55 dispatches for the Xylo. Looks like Marrazzo is going to take the cabbie route after the demise of Xylo.

8. Just like last month there are 4 brave souls who have put their money on the Quanto. A standing ovation.

9. The new kid on the block S Presso sees 5k dispatches. Would love to see its impact on the Alto and the Kwid in the long run.

10. Toyota is facing the heat of the slowdown. Fortuner is doing less than half the numbers it was doing last year and Crysta is also down by about 25%. With the expected price increase post BS6 it will be interesting to see the numbers of the Toyota duo.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for thr report,

Some more points to it,

Auto industry continues its tepid show and declining sales, now seeing some signs of recovery but is far over as the industry is hovering around a ‘de-growth’ of ~ 22%(y-o-y). The recovery signs are at the result of a massive discount, ushering in the festive season, new launches, etc.

With the only hope of September being better than the not-so-August, and October bids fair to be better than both, what with Navrati, Dassera and Diwali packed into the same month expect better results in October.

Maruti Suzuki: The auto giant in India, down 27.1 percent on year-ago sales (September 2018: 151,512). However, this is better than the July (98,274) and August (93,173) numbers when sales had fallen below the 100,000-unit mark.
The company will be looking to the just-launched S-Presso to add some fizz to its entry level car sales, given that it’s overall passenger car numbers are down 31.5 percent on year-ago sales. UV sales were better in September (21,526) over August (18,522) although YoY they point to a 0.5 percent decline.

Hyundai Motor: Down 14.8 percent (September 2018: 47,781) but better than August's 38,205 units. The Chennai-based Korean OEM is currently riding high on pent-up demand for its Venue compact SUV.
Loses its leadership positions in the CUV and C2 sedan segments, Creta losing volumes and Grand i10 not doing great, it will be interesting to see how Hyundai can hold on to its current market share.

Mahindra & Mahindra: Announced a joint venture with Ford Motor Co, reported total PV sales of 14,333 units, down 33 percent (September 2018: 21,411), but better than August's 13,504 units. Marazzo, XUV300 and TUV numbers are in a downward trend and Mahindra should be worried in their sales volumes in coming months.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor: Down 18.45 percent year on year (September 2018: 12,512 units) and slightly down on August's 10,701 units. GLANZA brings in the more than expected volumes and takes Toyota to being nr. 4 in the sales chart.

Tata Motors: Sees a larger YoY drop in September with sales of 8,097 units, down 56 percent YoY. But like the other automakers, the September numbers are an improvement over August 7,390 units. Tata Motors seem to focus on more retailing and sees 11 percent more retail in September 2019 compared with August. But with this the group is now positioned 7th in the sales chart in September.

Best Sellers:

Entry level: Maruti Suzuki dominates and with S-Presso, the top two will be from MS

Compact Hatch:Swift and wagon R are way ahead. The i10 twins are further down the line and see no way of catching up.

Premium Hatch: A success story, Baleno+ Glanza =14193

Compact Sedan: Dzire being the largest selling car of the month sums up the story here.

Executive Sedan:The most tightly fought segment is also a segment with diminishing numbers. This time it belongs to Honda City.

Premium Sedan: Civic gets back its numbers , not sure how Octavia has done lesser in an otherwise fiercely fought battle

Luxury Sedan:

Compact CUV+ SUV: Maruti Suzuki’s scheme wherein the company was offering free warranty for a period of five years or 1 lakh km to its customers across the country, worked very well and now the petrol variant is just months away from launch.
Mahindra’s XUV3OO loses steam and sells less than Tata Nexon, for the very first time.
Kia Seltos is the number 1 seller in the mid SUV, beating its nearest rival Creta, With the new launches in the segment (Seltos, Hector); the Mid-SUV segment grew a healthy 12% in Sep’19 v/s Sep’18!

Harrier does volumes lower than XUV5OO, but marginally higher than Jeep Compass.

Premium SUV:

MUV:Largely a Maruti dominated segment. With Ertiga +XL6 = 10124, Maruti has increased its dominance here. Renault Triber does phenomenally well and displaces the mighty Innova from its second position. Marrazo loses big time and is consistent in doing so m-o-m.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

1. 4000+ copies of Renault Triber should raise confidence for Renault
2. Brezza back to No 1 beating Venue.
3. City, Civic back to No 1. Honda should gain some confidence for bringing the new City in.
4. 22.5K+ sales shared by the new entrants - Venue, Seltos, Hector, Triber & XL6.

The dreaded Bell Curve has hit the industry and they are already in the Right side of the curve. 22% decline in the overall YOY sales is a representation of the industry's outlook today.
Slowdown in jobs, app based cabs, hefty car prices, change in mind set of the new gen-Z are some of the factors for this slowdown.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

XL6 taking numbers away from Ertiga show MS has done some homework before launching it!

Triber doing well is good news for companies who wish to experiment and create new segment! Good job Renault. Just get the service right and see the numbers fly.

S-presso will climb to top 5 at the cost of Alto and Kwid, just my wild guess.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Has Mitsubishi officially left the Indian market? Not a single car produced in the last 1 year!

Also, surprised to see that new entrant Kia is managing more sales than ford which is an almost 25 year old player in the Indian market. What is worse is the fact that Kia has only one model in it’s showrooms while ford has 6!

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata has 0 cars in the top 20 while Kia almost breaches the top 20. The worrying factor here is that MG Hector has the Harrier beaten hands down.

Re: September 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It's good to see the Civic do some numbers. I'm sure with the recent price cut, it should do much better. The CRV has massive discounts so it should clock better numbers as well.

The Honda City numbers are decent, especially considering that the buyer knows there's a new model around the corner.

This run will extend to Jan - Feb 2020 and I'm sure the numbers will go up further.
