The new extended version offers an enhanced driving range, low cost of ownership, connectivity, and zero emissions

Quote:
New Delhi: Tata Motors on Wednesday has launched Tigor EV variant with extended range at a price of Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for personal buyers and will be available across 30 cities.

The electric sedan comes with a range of 213 km and has ARAI certification, the company said in a statement.
Even if the effective range is ~140km it can workout as an affordable EV proposition for cabbies on Ola and Uber. They can save a lot on their monthly fuel bills and maintenance expenses.

The effective range bump is decent but it's underpowered for a car that weighs around 1000 kgs. The 21.5 kWh battery is pretty puny. I think the masses will surely have range anxiety with this one. Don't see it getting a lot of takers.

re: Tata Motors launches Tigor EV with extended range at Rs 12.59 lakh

Certainly this is not a car for people like us who want to take it for longer drive.

And Tata motors know it, they will be happy in selling few units for the people who buy this as a second car for city runs.

And it will find few takers among Uber Ola, airport taxis, office cabs as well. The simple reason cheap to run and cheap to maintain. Even if it runs 100 kilometers daily, it will save Rs. 500 for the person. With the addition of charging slots at Strategic location it can run lot more kilometers in a day which may not be possible considering speed of traffic flow.

re: Tata Motors launches Tigor EV with extended range at Rs 12.59 lakh

Range of ~213kms is decent. In winters, owners might get effective range of around 180-190 kms. As per my conversation to a few cabbies, there daily running is around 100-110 kms daily, in Delhi. That should be stretched to 150 kms on rare days.

Also, there should be major savings in terms of maintenance cost & considerable savings in fuel cost (as compared to CNG). But a premium of around Rs3.5 lakhs as compared to a stripped down CNG version of a similar compact sedan is still not justifiable for cabbies I guess. If there is a network of free charging points as there used to be when E2O was launched, there could be some takers. Otherwise, it is going to be a flop for now untill fuel prices are raised to unrealistic levels.

For private buyers price is 12.9lakhs seems exorbitant. Suddenly a Hyundai Kona appears the deal of the century!!! A puny 41 hp motor for 13 lakhs. Kona has leather seats ,6airbags , sunroof ,a gazillion more features, not to mention the power and range.

How much are they going to price the nexon based on this.? This tigor ev- Almost double the price of the standard tigor and half the power and range. Attempts like these will single handedly turn people away from electric cars.

I think this will find a few takers. Most office commutes are 60-80 kms up and down. For such people, this is really an economical option. With 213 kms on store, range anxiety is pretty much solved. I don't think power figures should matter much. What matters is the 0-60 kmph timings. Since the complete torque is available from zero rpm, I think 0-60 timings should be decent.

Yup. Double the price double the range and stuff probably? But still feel too steep a price. If it was <10 l ex showroom would have found it reasonable value. But still 41 bhp compared to kona's 136 hp.? 452 Kms (arai) Vs 231 (again arai) ?

Just my point of view sirs. That's all.

- For EVs to be priced in the similar lines of their IC-engine counterparts can happen only in the luxury vehicle segment.

- Price differences between EVs & their respective ICE vehicles increase as you go down from the luxury to the mass market segments.

- Can we ever get an electric Alto or Kwid or Tiago priced in the range of their ICE counterparts with similar capabilities or capacities? A definitive NO for the time being!

The extended range version makes more sense as it curbs range anxiety to some extent. But it is not feasible for Taxi owners (Ola, Uber, etc) as their running and route is not predictable/fixed. For a petrol/diesel/CNG powered car, he can take a quick stop at a petrol pump even when the customer is in the taxi and wouldn't mind that. Also many times, same taxis are driven by 2 drivers in opposite shifts (to maximize the income from the taxi). This is just not possible in an EV.

There is no electric car that is cheap today and it is not going to get cheap anytime soon. If Mahindra can charge 7lacs for an electric box, I'd close my eyes and buy a Tigor. The range is a good 60% more and it is a proper, nice looking car.

That puny 41hp electric motor will out accelerate any 800cc engine out there.

I would say it is about half that or even lower, in most cases. Even if it were the figures that you say, you can do two trips on a single charge. All of this will become less of an issue as charging infrastructure improves.

Give this car an opportunity with our airport cab drivers and see it being adopted or accepted real quick. With their earnings so thin and their drony diesel engines putting them to sleep, it will be blessing to drive something nice and quiet. Almost zero maintenance too.

This car is not going to fly off shelves. It does give someone with the means, an opportunity to go all electric for a city run about. Very good effort by TATA.

Once you drive an electric car, you'll know that you never have to worry about pickup. They're good to go as soon as you punch the accelerator. Kona makes 0-100 in around 8 seconds. Almost 3 seconds faster than any of it's counterparts.

re: Tata Motors launches Tigor EV with extended range at Rs 12.59 lakh

This car will be suited for people who has or can mould a lifestyle around it.
People who go for daily office commute of (max)100km to and fro 5-6 days a week, few school and grocery /mall runs. Occasional visits to nearby relatives.
For longer journeys that are rare, get a zoomcar(if you want to drive) or a taxi.

Definitely not suited for traditional car buyers and village use but could be adapted people whose lifestyle is limited to the city most of the time or by environment concious urban youth.(if they have/can land a well paying jobs-whose chances are slim nowadays).

The main thing about electric cars is that it requires a bit of planning and effort (keeping the car chargerged before a 150-170km roundtrip journey. But we Indians are a lazy bunch who can't take the effort to do pre-emptive actions or make a proper plan.

re: Tata Motors launches Tigor EV with extended range at Rs 12.59 lakh

It's funny that people want range, but the product to be filled with gizmos , yet priced competitive. We need to remember that we still don't have any Infrastructure in place for EVs and the batteries aren't cheap either. The range anxiety will be there for few more years until the batteries become cheaper and the technology improves.
That said, I think this is better suited for city use and the cities need EVs, since there's less Green space and are no less of a concrete jungles. People can buy EVs as their main people mover for city drives if they're willing to get a self-drive for those occasional highway runs.
PS: I think it's a good move by TATA launching the extended range and also this gives an insight of what price the Nexon EV is going to be.
