It is understood that the destination of the exported SUVs is South America. Details of the shipment have yet to be received and Autocar Professional's recent emails to both Kia Motors India and Chennai Port Trust were yet to elicit a response. Other export markets on the cards for the company are the Middle East and South Asian countries.

On September 5, Chennai Port Trust had signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Kia Motors India and its logistic partner Glovis India Anantpur Pvt Ltd for the export of cars through Chennai Port. The agreement, which is valid till 2029, was signed by Mukesh Balani, Traffic Manager and Jong Soo Kim, Chief Operating Officer, Kia Motors in the presence of P Raveendran, chairman; Cyril C George, deputy chairman; M M Parthiban, Principal Commissioner of Customs and Jim Young Kim, managing director, Glovis.

Chennai Port is offering tailor-made facilities and concessional benefits for the export of vehicles to Kia Motors India, which will exclusively use Chennai Port for this purpose. It is understood that around 30 percent of the production from its Anantpur facility would constitute exports.

Re: Kia begins exporting made-in-India cars, ships 471 Seltos SUVs

That's good to know. Some of these MNC's are doing very well by exporting cars abroad, making India as their base. This indemnifies them to some extent from the local market uncertainities, generates jobs, earns precious foreign exchange and reaffirms the product quality. The last point about "product quality" is though debatable as exports of cars to many countries are commensurate with their much higher safety and stringent emission requirements.

That a total of 30 % of the Kia products from Anantpur are earmarked for exports should be very good news. The Kia Seltos is receiving good reviews here and it is hoped that they will maintain the expected quality levels, backed by very good customer care.

Kia India to focus on SUVs, MPVs, no plans for hatchbacks, sedans.

Ho Sung Song, President and CEO, Kia Motors Corporation: "We will use the India factory as export hub for SUVs because the worldwide trend is that the SUV is getting stronger, while the hatch and sedan are getting decreased. Han-woo Park, had told that the company is mulling over an affordable 7-seater MPV. Kia's Ertiga-rivalling MPV will be slightly bigger than the Seltos, and below the Carnival

At cost of making people wait for months here. Doesn't the chip shortage affect these exports?
Correct me if wrong but international market may not have waiting for months for any cars (Luxury and sports excluded)

This news will not cheer up future customers of KIA. With new car launch and added load of exports on the factory + semiconductors issue, there will be more delays in delivering vehicle to customer in India. Their Twitter account is everyday bombarded with delivery related questions from customers. KIA definitely needs to expand the factory to meet demand.

Very good news. This is a sensible strategy to pursue in the context of the Indian car market where volumes sold in the domestic market take time to build up. By using the Indian production investment to produce for exports Kia (and Hyundai etc) help bring in economies of scale needed to turn a profit. I can bet that the overheads of KIA India are way below that of Ford & GM who exited. There is every chance that Chinese car & EV bus makers will follow a similar strategy with regard to their Indian subsidiaries.
