Segment Leaders, Manufacturers - H1 FY20

- Maruti Suzuki is No.1 in 7 segments out of the 9 considered in the graph! In Entry-hatch segment it has market share as high as 78%!

-Hyundai enjoys the market dominance in Mid SUV category with its offering Creta! Will sibling Seltos from Kia, erode its market share? This segment will be interesting as many more players and offerings are due soon.

-Executive Sedan is another segment where the leadership is divided between Maruti, Hyundai & Honda. While Maruti dominates; Hyundai & Honda are equally close!

-Toyota undoubtedly rules the Premium SUV category with Fortuner and has a Market Share of 53% in the segment!

-Also Compact SUV has grown the highest as a segment in recent years and Brezza has helped Maruti entry into the SUV makers list. However, Hyundai’s offering Venue has challenged Maruti’s dominance and got a good enough competition to the model.

Segment-Wise Market Leaders - H1 FY20 (Apr - Sept '19)-13.jpg

-Indian Passenger Vehicle Industry registered a double-digit decline of -17.3% in FY20 v/s FY19

- Around 27,57,062 cars were sold in the Indian Sub-continent between April 2019 to March 2020; while 33,32,270 cars were sold between April 2018 to March 2019

-The huge decline in sales was unprecedented and was primarily affected by muted economy, BS6 transition and Covid 19 impact

- 2 New OEMs into the Indian Market – Kia & MG Motors. Both fared extremely well in these adverse conditions.

- Maruti Suzuki was able to maintain >50% Market Share in India even though it degrew -18% YoY. ( drops 0.6% MS)

-The Top 3 Gainers of Market Share in FY20 were – Kia Motors, Hyundai & Renault

-The Top Losers in terms of Market Share were – Honda Cars and Tata Motors

-Tata’s fate in particular is not supporting the brand and even with multiple new launches; it failed to make an impact in sales.

Best Selling SUVs for FY2020 :

- Maruti’s Brezza took the Top Spot as the Best Selling SUV for the Fiscal Year and was the only SUV in India to cross 1 Lakh units sales in the 12 month period

- Hyundai made a strong entry with Venue and ranked second in the table

-Hyundai's Creta was challenged by Kia’s Seltos. Do note that Seltos is just 90 units behind Creta in the comparison.

-Tata Nexon ranked 5th and was also Tata’s best selling SUV! Nexon fared better than the likes of Ecosport and even the newly launched XUV300.

-There was not a single Mahindra model in the Top 5 selling SUVs – speaks of how M&M is slowly losing hold in the SUV race.
