That rear profile is taken from its elder sibling - the Sportage. It has the same tail-light design. Infact the whole car looks like a smaller Kia Sportage.

I think we are going a little off topic, but the Venue actually shares its platform with the Grand i10 Nios and not the Santro and neither the existing Elite i20. Hence the Sonet too would be on the same platform. My guess is that the next generation i20 would also be based on this.

Based on what I am seeing both of you are saying the same thing. The Grand i10 is also based on the Santro Platform. Not sure if the Nios is any different.
Here is another link which talks about it > (Rumour: Santro's K1 platform to spawn two new models)

Also some links outside of Team-BHP for reference:

And here is the blanket statement from one of those links:

The K1 architecture will also underpin Hyundai’s all upcoming sub-4 metre cars.

I guess Hyundai has unofficially made it official that the next gen Indian i20, which will obviously be under 4m, will also now be sharing its platform with the Santro. So the underpinnings of the international i20 will be completely different. It is a 4m plus car.

Seems Hyundai has been deeply inspired by Suzuki’s Heartech and is setting the K1 in the same fashion to be the base for all its cars positioned below Verna and Creta.

Agree with your comparison to Maruti and Heartect. I would be very surprised if Kia follows a different strategy. Looking at this from a big picture view. Hyundai and now Kia in the near future are the only companies that are taking Maruti head on in all the segments. To remain competitive with Maruti in terms of the cost and at the same time make profits they would have to use the cheaper K1 platform.

At the same time, let us also agree that the i20 Platform is nothing so great to write home about also. The Pre-2017 Verna was based on the i20 Platform and was called a boat due to the handling characteristics. And the rear space was pathetic. The masterstroke from Hyundai/Kia has been to provide the Elantra platform to all these newer cars >4m like the 2017 Verna, Kia Seltos and the 2020 Creta.

But yes, As a buyer if I were spending 10 lakhs and above and maybe even 13+ Lakhs for the top end car, such as the Venue/Sonet and the realization of the fact that it is based on the humble Santro Platform - in other words that it is in many ways a glorified Santro does pinch the mind and heart somehere

These press images remind me of the Volvo XC40.

The car looks very nice. I think the rear of the car is little over done.
KIA is set foot in India with a good strategy.
I know it’s too early to predict the pricing, but was curious to know if this is going to compete with likes of TATA HBX or Nexon in terms of pricing.

Yes. Kia is targeting all the segments that are hot right now and coming up with designs that are sharp and modern. Going by the Seltos case, the Sonet will be more feature loaded and go against the Venue and probably a bit higher than the Venue pricing.

The Tata HBX is one segment lower than the Nexon, Brezza, Venue, etc. With the Sonnet, Kia is targeting the Venue, Nexon, Xuv3OO, etc and will be priced accordingly.

Re: The Kia Sonet Compact SUV, now unveiled

This is like the designers saying, Volvo XC series from the front, side and coming to the rear they suddenly thought about VW Tiguan . But overall looks like a nice, sharp product. Much better than its competition, including cousins Venue/ Creta.

From the front, it looks nice, sporty and macho, rest of the design is rather simple and plain. Dare I say, boring. But maybe it's the color.

Re: The Kia Sonet Compact SUV, now unveiled

IMO the rear seems a bit too short/squeezed/abrupt compared to the front overhang.
Am not saying that i don't like the looks but seems a bit out of proportion for my liking.
I dissected the front and rear and joined to illustrate. Now some will point out that we could have taken center point of the wheel base to check the proportion but i chose the front door edge. If you see the left portion alone one would imagine a longish SUV.
While a lot of SUVs will have this disproportion but here it seems very predominant
