Karnataka: 20% of parking space in buildings for EV charging facilities

According to a media report, the government of Karnataka is working on an amendment for the Model Building Bye-laws 2017 that would mandate residential and commercial buildings to reserve 20% parking space for EV charging facilities.

It has been reported that the draft amendment is ready and has been sent to the urban development department for approvals. The government is expected to invite suggestions from the public on the draft law soon.

The proposed amendment complies with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to include 20% parking space to promote electric vehicles.

Isn't it better to have an EV charging facility or a provision for one for every individual parking? That can also be connected to the home owners electricity meter. Else even at home you will have to struggle to get access to the common charging point!

Or are the charges too expensive for that?

Already there is parking shortage for regular cars in offices, what is the government trying to prove?
If they have the guts they should let go of the heavy road taxes levied on new electric vehicles if they want to promote electric cars.

FYI, there is no road tax for electric cars in Karnataka and in few other states.
There is a clear policy push towards electric, but we don't have enough viable models in the market.

I personally think regulation drives change and this regulation though onerous is in the right direction. I hope there are some sops given as well.

As far as road tax is concerned, Karnataka has already reduced the road tax substantially. I think it is waived off.

Another regulation. But where is the enforcement? The current bye-laws mandate a car part in every house. Still we have so many cars parked on the roads in front of the residences. Same with commercial buildings, so many shops with no parking facility. They should first learn to enforce existing laws.

My bad, I didn't know about the tax structure with respect to electric cars in Karnataka. I thought it was Tamil Nadu which pioneered in waiving off the taxes on electric cars.
I would just like to add that govt should order the builders to make provision for sufficient parking space mandatory for newly constructed buildings just like how they did it in Delhi.
In Bangalore though the builders build basements, they rent it out to shops to make extra fortune.

Additional regulations of building bye-laws during an economic slowdown will not help the GDP growth.

Maybe if this move is incentivised by allowing people to build additional floors and taller structures, then there's a good chance it'll be used. But then again, given how govt processes are inept by design, the inspections could probably never happen.
