re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

I don't have much hope for Gravitas. Except for looks and the Landrover pedigree sticker, it has not got anything going for it. It will be competing directly with XUV500 which is supposed to come with an all-wheel-drive and automatic. Mahindra can easily integrate the petrol automatic from Thar too. That means the direct competition will be a true SUV, with more drive train options, and more bling features. This is going to be a repeat of the Safari vs Scorpio battle, and it looks like Mahindra has already won it even before launch.

I too am sad but looks like Tata is again heading down their well trodden path of arrive early without the finished product/arrive late with a package that is missing something. The Safari 2.2 was IMHO the better product overall but by then the Scorpio had a huge fanbase, not to mention Mahindra's dogged determination to keep winning the customers through constant improvement. A Gravitas without bling beyond the Harrier or an AWD will not be able to compete.

And the pricing. Even if its priced a lakh more than the Harrier it will be in the Innova category. Now that the new Innova has android auto and apple car play, I can't really find many reasons to buy this over the Innova.

We don't even know how the new xuv500 looks like, all we are seeing are probable render sketches. Gravitas looks like it's gonna stand taller than the xuv though. Let's not dismiss anything without giving a chance. Interesting fight ahead though.
True, M&M rarely win design battles.

The biggest advantage that the Gravitas will have over the all new XUV500 is that the former has completed its beta testing phase through the initial Harriers. Both manufacturers have a reputation of being plagued with issues the first year of the product cycle. XUV500 launch owners struggled with niggles and faults.

The price of Gravitas's beta testing has been borne by initial harrier owners.

re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

Gravitas set to be launched on 26th Jan, 2021.

As per a news report in TimesOfIndia, Tata motors has confirmed that Gravitas will be unveiled on 26th Jan, 2021.

Main differences in Gravitas with respect to Harrier are expected to be:
Rear disc brakes, extra row of seats, Electric Power Steering, Connected Car Tech, 18 inch alloys, Electronic Parking Brake with auto-hold.

So the parts/components which have not been tested already in Harrier are: tuning of new Electric Power Steering, connected car tech and EPB with auto-hold.

Finally electric power steering. Joy of joys ! This should make it as light and feelsome as Tiago or nexon. The super tanker steering of my safari was the reason o sold it off ( too heavy in city traffic). Have read in many forums that harrier hydraulic steering is also heavy at city speeds.

Good job Tata.

Tata Gravitas:

Tata Gravitas prices will be announced a little later in the year ( post unveil)
Gravitas SUV is taller than Harrier to accommodate third row.
To get the same 170hp diesel with manual and auto options as Harrier.

Pure speculation; now that we know about the launch date being so close, is it possible that the dark blue Gravitas spotted few days back is heading overseas for the crash tests ?

Honestly what's the point? We've seen the Geneva models, we've seen the promotional videos. Everyone knows what it will look like and everyone knows what's under the hood. So why not just throw a surprise pricing at launch and make money than showing the car in Jan and waiting months to decide the price(guessing XUV500 got them spooked) while competitors run to the bank laughing at them yet again?

Tata is really testing the patience of its customers. The launch is already so delayed. No point in doing the launch in installments. It's not a whole new product.

re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

I am curious about why they are spending so much money on rebranding a 7 seater Harrier. It has decent market reputation. Why not cash in on that? MG won't rebadge its Hector for a 7 seat variant. Why is Tata doing this?

Excellent question!

Or if Tata does want to differentiate it as something more upmarket and have better margins, then that front shouldn't look ditto as a Harrier.

Given the additional row, extra features and already high pricing of Harrier, I don't think they will be able to get better margins on Gravitas. For that they will have to price it too close to Innova Crysta, which will be suicidal IMO.
