Excellent attempt . Gave me goosebumps on the sight of the new Safari appearing through the water curtain. IMHO, this ad was one of the best out of all the brilliant ad campaigns for Safari. Not sure if they will be able to better it ever!

Doesn't a big hole in the roof compromise in some way the structural rigidity of the car shell. Like in case there is a rollover (it happens).

I don't see the mania about sunroofs in a place like India where if anything we get way too much sun. And the car is more often than not safe refuge from it.

Apparently, it doesn't! This question was asked by Hormazd to one Tata Motors' VP. According to him, the Glass actually makes it stronger!

The question and the answer is from around 9:45.

Thanks for the share.

Glass might be more rigid (I'm taking his word for it ... though rigidity is not the same as torsional stiffness and overall shell integrity). But glass shatters, sheet metal does not.

Another thing is that having had my share of sliding power window issues from Maruti to Tata, its really dicey to my mind having something like that right over my head, in the monsoons.

Re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

The glued on windshield in the front and back makes that area of the car stronger as per the car manufactures - but glass being what it is, will meet its match in the shape of a decent sized pebble off the highway.

Sunroof when installed on a roof designed for it makes the roof more rigid - sounds like a good plan, folks down south should be careful about falling coconuts. But of course, coconuts make light work of any body panel, Sunroof, Windshield and sometimes crash through the sunroof and take the dashboard along with it.

I felt that phrase!

This is what a coconut fall does to Maruti's pathetic sheet metal. Now, the question is how better or worse the toughened glass of sunroof would be, in comparison?

Toughened glass is highly resistant to breaking if hit in the center - it dissipates the energy and doesn’t shatter.

In my personal experience, a laminated sheet glass took a hit easily without breaking from a leather ball which accidentally was hit in that direction (hit it towards center), but broke a couple of weeks later when a small bottle of nail polish was accidentally flung at it and hit the edge.

Also watch this video I found!

It is a tricky and not that simplistic IMHO. One is touch but brittle and other is non brittle (high tensile strength) but not so tough. If a small coconut falls, nothing will happen to the toughened glass but it leaves a small dent on the metal roof. But if a rock falls from a good height, it will shatter the glass and land right inside the car while the sheet metal takes a huge dent but still holds rock.
Theoretically, in the even of a roll over, there is a probability of the sunroof getting separated (or shattered) and the occupants getting thrown out (if they are not wearing seatbelts)

That would be due to the speed of the car, and the speed at which the pebble was thrown from the tyre of the vehicle that caused the pebble to take off. The second part also a result of the speed of the other vehicle. So add these speeds and the size of the pebble, and we have a small missile coming in at about 150+ kmph.

but both the glass and metal are part of the same section. A lot depends on where the coconut falls - at the centre, the edge, or where.

Yes, tricky

Re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

We (at least I) did not start talking about coconuts or pebbles.

But a rollover.

That's the entire two tons of the vehicle smashing itself.

Glass or metal?

I'll take my chances with metal and get my sunlight the old fashioned way.

Cheers, Doc

I suppose the fears of a roll-over diminishes when moving from the horizontally blessed previous gen truck to the monocoque upcoming Safari.

Re: The Tata Gravitas (H7X) SUV. EDIT: Branded as the Safari!

On the topic of Road Presence .

While the Harrier and the Safari 21 (in video) have been acclaimed to have good road presence, I wonder if it can ever match the old Safaris.

Height is a defining factor with the old Safaris , amply aided by the stepped roof and the box back. I really can't fathom how a Harrier based Safari with no change to the front would hold up against the Big Daddy.

I clicked this picture of my Storme parked next to a Harrier Camo.

Safari owners please pitch and chime in !

The
Bolero puts up a good fight, demonstrating "ooncha is the new lamba" 'Height' is the new 'length'.

I hope owners have the ability to opt out of the tracking and monitoring features that they don’t want. This whole connected world that we are heading towards is a bit too creepy IMO. I have no desire for the car manufacturer to know where I am, and how I drive.

You're right. I was in a bad accident myself on the Abu Dhabi highway at over 140 KMS (Rolled over three-four times). A Roll over exerts unimaginable force, and is quite hard on every inch of the car. One shouldn't take it lightly. Here is the most famous Bond clip

The thing I liked the most about the older Safari (even the Scorpio) was that they would tower over everything on the road including a segment above SUVs like the Fortuner and Endeavour but the Safari 2021 won’t be doing that! Even the Hexa has more road presence than the Harrier (Safari 2021 as well).
