Toyota Tsusho & Maruti-Suzuki to jointly set up a high-end vehicle scrappage unit

Maruti-Toyota venture will be the second big automobile JV to work on a high-end vehicle scrappage plant in India.

As the government works out a scrappage policy for older vehicles in India, Maruti Suzuki has decided to set up a old vehicles dismantling plant along with a subsidiary of Toyota.

The venture between Maruti and Toyota Tsusho India will supply, dismantle and process end-of-life vehicles, and market and sell scrap and other products generated from such activities, sources told TOI. In doing so, the Maruti-Toyota venture will be the second big automobile JV to work on a high-end vehicle scrappage plant in India, following the footsteps of Mahindra & Mahindra (through subsidiary Mahindra Accelo) that has partnered public-sector MSTC. The two have set up a recycling plant at Greater Noida.

Toyota Tsusho is already active in India and is in the manufacturing and trading of auto parts and components, steel shearing and processing, import and export of automobile components and logistics management services. Its Japanese parent Toyota Tsusho Corporation is active in metals, parts and logistics, automotive, machinery, energy and projects, chemicals, electronics, food, and consumer services.

Maruti’s parent Suzuki and Toyota have a deeper relationship where they are buying minor equity into each other, apart from working out joint vehicles, engines and new technology plans for India and the global markets.

I just hope going to the scrapper is a term that catches up with the Indian janata, be it at the end of life of a vehicle or for want of salvageable parts.

Re: Toyota Tsusho & Maruti-Suzuki to jointly set up a high-end vehicle scrappage unit

Recently a friend of mine was in a position to scrap his 2002 Alto. Over the 15years age limit for a petrol vehicle in NCR.
A FNG was quoting INR25k approx. I asked him to check with Mahindra scrap yard near Delhi (https://cerorecycling.com/)
The quote received from mahindra was INR14k.

Finally He sold it to Cars24 for INR 28K. The buyer would use the vehicle for salvage. ( they returned the RC, to be cancelled at RTO by my friend).

My point is: unless these OEM backed scrap yards offer a good deal, people aren’t going to sell their vehicle directly to them.

Re: Toyota Tsusho & Maruti-Suzuki to jointly set up a high-end vehicle scrappage unit

Crap :(

Why does this make me fear that the no extension beyond 15 year rule will be nationwide rather than just the NCR? Maruti are generally the first to "adhere" to regulations so they wouldn't have set this up unless they saw a vehicle scrapping policy coming soon

Manufacturers would get carbon credit by scrapping older vehicles and earn by selling new ones. The government would need some way to make people start buying new cars again. The NGT etc would be happy because new cars are supposed to be cleaner.

It's the perfect storm for people like me who have vehicles older than 10 years :(

Good initiative, at least now the used car market will be spared from overpriced Alto and Wagon-R.

Re: Toyota Tsusho & Maruti-Suzuki to jointly set up a high-end vehicle scrappage unit

This is the best news that i read yesterday. Vehicle scrappage needs to catch-up fast in our country. Now that Maruti has jumped-in, we can be sure that something big is on its way.

Both OEMs and Government need to work together on such initiatives. OEMs can provide the necessary infrastructure, and Government can back it up with policies that make Scrappage attractive. We have millions of 15+ year old active vehicles on our roads and thus the opportunity is huge. This will support the new vehicle industry as well.

Govt to approve vehicle scrappage policy soon : Link

This is abit sad, instead of pushing auto industry to make better vehicles that can endure the poor infrastructure & long term reliable usage requirements of our country (while now aims to develop itself by being an efficient manufacturing & export driven economy), and instead of helping extract somewhat meaningful value out of that heavily under-utilized asset (in the average Indian household), Govt is instead incentivising it's planned obsolescence !?

Wonder why the Govt doesn't care first to pass a stern law against lemon cars & dodgy practices at dealerships sales & service centres ?

Imagine, half the country (where the people can barely afford) will be forced to buy a new vehicle every 15 years.

Maruti & Toyota to set up vehicle dismantling & recycling station

Headquartered in New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki-Toyotsu India Private Limited (MSTI) has been established to set up its vehicle dismantling and recycling unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh within 2020-21.

The joint venture is between Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) and Toyota Tsusho Group (Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC)- Toyota Tsusho India Private Limited (TTIPL)) with each owning a 50% equity.

MSTI will be responsible to procure and dismantle End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). The process will include complete solid and liquid waste management as per the Indian laws and globally approved quality and environment standards.

The facility in Noida will be the first unit by MSTI and the JV will add more such units across India. The unit will have an initial capacity of 2000 vehicles per month.

Re: Maruti & Toyota to set up vehicle dismantling & recycling station

So after Mahindra, another biggy joins the recycling club. It would be nice if the cars/vehicles to be scrapped are picked up from their dealerships rather than just a few places. I feel this can be easily done considering most places receive new cars via containers and those return empty to base. So why not utilise the same transport medium for transportation to the recycling unit. It would save money also.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason. There is a lot of money to be made in scrapping cars. Besides salvaging parts that can be reused, there's also other metals in parts which will fetch a good value if properly extracted and recycled.

I'm assuming the scrapping policy will also have some sort of compensation built in for the customer as well. So a perfectly running car will be pretty rewarding for the recycling agency.

Re: Maruti & Toyota to set up vehicle dismantling & recycling station

This is very good initiative considering the scrapage policy being introduced.

There should also be a way where in the police who park many stolen and unclaimed vehicles, which are being stored in the yard for longer than stipulated time can be eligible for ELV. This will be a big boon for police agencies.

In addition the vehicles totaled by insurance agencies can also be channeled. Any inputs from BHPians on this ?

Draft Scrapage to be announced in the next 7days.

Maruti-Toyota in JV for recycling plant

Maruti and Toyota took their partnership to another level on Wednesday when they announced a 50-50 JV to set up a dismantling and recycling plant in Noida by 20-21. They had already announced the development of hybrid vehicles together and now have also started cross badging of their products. This JV will be headquartered in Delhi and will be expanded pan-India.

Remember the government has also announced that they will come up with a comprehensive scrappage policy.

The new venture is expected to manage complete solid and liquid waste in accordance with Indian laws and best global standards. This is expected to reduce pollution and make roads safer. The JV will source end of life vehicles (ELVs) from dealers and directly from customers.

Toyota already has recycling plants in Japan where even Team-bhp was invited. Link to a brilliant thread (Report: Visiting a Car Recycling Facility in Japan).

Quote:
In October this year, auto industry body SIAM said the draft guidelines on authorised vehicle scrapping facility (AVSF) in India will help in setting up such facilities in an organised manner while reiterating that the sector is waiting for incentive-based Vehicle Scrappage Policy from the government.

As per the draft AVSF guidelines, individuals, firms society or trust will be allowed to set up scrappage facility subject to meeting eligibility criteria and receiving authorisation from licensing authority. The authorisation will be valid for 10 years which shall be renewable for another 10 years. Prospective scrappers must have usable treatment with a minimum area of 4,000 sq metre for small vehicles and 8,000 sq metres for all other bigger vehicles.
I am also attaching a pdf provided by Toyota on complete dismantling and recycling procedure followed by them. Very interesting read.
Toyota.pdf

This will be the second facility of this kind. The first was a JV by Mahindra with a public sector enterprise. Its in Noida too under the subsidiary Mahindra Accelo. Please do check out the website. Wonderful feeling.
