Buying a new car? A big one? Can’t decide among the countable options available: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the likes! Wait a month, and you will have another one in the line to choose from. Teana, from the Japanese automobile major Nissan, is all set to sink its teeth deeper in to the Indian market. The Carlos Ghosn-led company already has its Nissan X-Trail in the SUV segment. Teana, the company’s first sedan in India, is all set to hit the road in March.
The car will be pitted against Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in the Indian market. ]With a price tag of Rs 21-22 lakh, the gasoline motor car is billed as vehicle that could make Nissan a household name in India, automobile market sources told the Nissan was originally scheduled to launch the sedan in January 2007 under the brand name of Cefiro, as it is known in some of the markets around the world. ]However, later the company felt it was better to roll-out the car under the Teana brandname, the way it is known in Japan. Nissan Teana is a mid-sized front-wheel drive introduced in 2003. It is exported as Nissan Maxima and Nissan Cefiro to certain markets. The car shares platform with the North American Nissan Maxima and Nissan Altima. Nissan Teana is powered by a 2.3-litre engine which pumps out 173 horsepower, say market sources. The engine may couple to a 4-speed automatic for the Indian market. ]Externally, Teana looks like a Volkswagen Passat and Audi A6, having the same modern shape and solid feel. A major plus in Teana is its large wheelbase of 2775mm. In China, Teana is manufactured by the Dongfeng Motor Company, under a joint venture operation with Nissan.Nissan had opened its India office in 2005, since then the company has sold over 200 units of X-trail and its variant, the Elegance. The company also launched a limited edition version of the X-Trail called X-Special. After launching Teana in Indian market, Nissan has plans to introduce another SUV called Patrol by June 2007, as per sources. The company plans to be a volume player in India by selling 1,00,000 cars by 2009.
