Next-gen Skoda Octavia to be launched in a couple of months

While responding to a tweet, Zac Hollis - Director, Sales and Marketing, Skoda India, has revealed that the next generation Octavia will be launched in a couple of months.



The new Octavia has already been spotted testing in India. The car gets a redesigned front and rear fascia with the Skoda lettering on the boot lid and Rotare Aero alloy wheels.

In the international market, the new Octavia comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The car is offered with a 2-spoke multi-function steering wheel, while a 3-spoke wheel is available as an option. Skoda has also replaced the traditional gear lever with a switch.

In India, customers are likely to get a choice of two turbo petrol engines. These include a 1.5-litre TSI paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 2.0-litre TSI which could be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Is Skoda going to be launching the new Octavia vRS 245 in India as well anytime soon?

Internationally, the engine and drivetrain seems to remain the same as the current gen vRS 245 in India.

It would be really great if Skoda brings in the IV version of the Octavia, which is a strong hybrid and can also run entirely on electric battery for some time and also even recharge the battery from the petrol engine. India needs to encourage the adoption of such vehicles as they are much more efficient than their pure petrol engine counterparts.
In other countries like Sri Lanka, they had given a duty benefit on import of such cars for a few years and now almost 80% of the cars on Colombo roads are Hybrids. India should also encourage such cars. Pure electric cars are still a far dream for India as India produces 70% of its electricity from thermal sources (Coal predominantly) and using electricity generated by burning coal is a sheer outrage. Also, one of the biggest challenges for India is that in Transmission and Distribution, India has losses of almost 60%, which means that for every 3 units generated at the power plant, only 1 unit reaches the end consumer (or is paid for) - rest is stolen or shown as losses.
Electric vehicles can be viable in India, only if people adopt large scale roof top solar energy generation (10KW setups) and then start charging their electric cars from that. In that manner, the electric cars will not be grid dependent and there will not be any T&D losses and every unit generated will be consumed on site of the user. The catch however is the car needs to remain parked at home when the Sun is up during daytime so this system can work only for a second car which is used only infrequently and not as a daily driver to office.

To bring the new Octavia vRS is still in discussion stage, as of now no confirmed plans for the launch.

The 'problematic' one is the 7S DQ200 to be found only on the rumoured 1.5TSI version of the Octavia. MQ200 is the 6S manual mated to the 1.0TSI Polo & Kushaq.

Apart from MQ200 is a newly developed manual gearbox, in superb the 2L engine equipped with DQ381 gearbox. Which is more reliable than DQ200. Its available in international market for a while now. Most probably the DQ381 will be the gearbox in Octavia too, can anyone confirm?
