Indian Cars, their USPs and deal-breakers in your view

There are a number of cars in the market with each having different USPs (unique selling propositions/unique selling points) and different DBPs (deal-breaker points).

How about listing out various cars and their deal-breaker & deal-maker points that you find/see?

Though the list can quite long, here's a very short random list that occurred to me:
  • Toyota Etios Twins: + driveability of the petrol engine, - interiors, ride-quality
  • Renault Duster: + ride-quality, - interiors, lack of proper AT
  • MG Hector: + vfm, - design
  • KUV100: + don't know, - design
  • Toyota Innova: + reliability, - price
  • Jeep Compass: + overall product, - price
  • Tata Hexa: + ride-quality, AT box, solid feel - nothing much
  • Tata Nexon: + safety, - unconventional design
  • Maruti Vitara Brezza: + conventional and proportionate design, - overall average package
  • Volkswagen Polo: + evergreen and mature design language, - dct issues
  • Tata Tiago: + design, vfm, - nothing serious
  • Maruti Celerio: + no-frills, - design, tinnish feel
  • Mahindra Bolero: + rugged looks, abuse friendly, - ride-quality, interiors
  • Mahindra Verito Vibe: + don't know any, - design
  • Mahindra KUV100: + doesn't know much, - overdone & toyish design
  • Maruti WagonR: + tall boy design, petrol engine - seats lack underthigh support, tinnish feel
  • Kia Seltos: + liked overall package - nothing much
  • Hyundai Venue: + liked overall package, - nothing much
  • Hyundai Santro: + fit and finish - felt pricey
  • Ford Ecosport: + design, handling, safety kit, - space
  • Tata Safari: + ride-quality, proportionate looks, feel from driver seat, - dated product, handling
  • Mahindra Scorpio: + looks, sprightly engine, - ride-quality
  • Fiat Punto: + looks, handling&dynamics, - company calling it quits
  • Tata Harrier: + killer looks, - refinement & finesse not upto the segment expectations
Note:

1) These are purely my views, no offense to anyone.
2) Request members to discuss purely about the products, and that's all, no discussion about company, A.S.S, or brand.
3) Limit the list to not more than three USPs and three DBPs for each car, that too each point with 1 or 2 word description if possible.
4) Discuss only about mass-market cars, no discussion about luxury marques/brands like Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo, JLR, and Lexus etc.

re: Indian Cars, their USPs and deal-breakers in your view

Honda City : + Looks, Great Engine - Poor Feature List, Pricey
Honda Amaze: + CVT in both Petrol and Diesel, - Looks, Price

In my view one of the DBP is that the car and design is way too old. For example, no where in the world toyota would keep the same design for a car for more than 6 years (Except for some BOF SUVs) , but in India looks like the etios twins would celebrate their 25 th anniversary with same design. Same thing with Mahindra cars as well !

Just a note = we try to cover all the deal-makers & deal-breakers in the Likes & Dislikes post of Official Reviews. Those are intentionally placed at the very beginning and trust me, we spend a LOT of time thinking them through .

Yes, that's the best list from the reviewers of the forum.

But here the objective is to see the individual member's views, which might be different from person to person.

Re: Indian Cars, their USPs and deal-breakers in your view

Excellent thread

Kia Seltos
+ Excellent set of combinations to choose from
+ Three engine option
+ Awesome interiors
+ A great feature list including UVO connected car
+ decent ride and drive quality

- bland design (though front is nice)
- Hell no.. its just another Creta
- Price: top end goes above 20L OTR, would rather consider Tucson or something else
- ASS: question on reach and their capability
- Interior space - nothing great, felt cramped a bit

Harrier
+ Amazing build quality
+ Simply one of the best ride and drive quality
+ Excellent interiors, both in terms of finesse, space and quality - unmatched
+ Killer looks and road presence
+ drive & terrain response modes
+ Would appeal enthusiasts

- No AT, No 4x4
- No powered tailgate.
- Way too negative exaggerated out of proportion publicity on so called "perceived niggles & finesse"
- Not many combinations.. finally everyone ends up with top most XZ model
- Uncertainty over capability of their ASS in handling/servicing this top end car from Tata's stable. Difficult to digest that TML can make such excellent vehicle.

Isuzu Vcross Dmax
+ SUV, Yes that's a proper SUV with 4x4 and terrain response modes
+ Build quality
+ Excellent space
+ Sheer road presence
+ Powerful responsive engine
+ Enthusiast appeal. Good that its not a mass market product.

- A slight bumpy from rear
- Interiors - Bland. Could have been a bit better
- Peer pressure and social/family acceptability.. Oh yeah its a truck

Compass
+ driving experience
+ build quality
+ Its Jeep. Period

- Price
- ASS
- Cramped interior and less space
- NVH levels with diesel engine

Hector (aka Chevy Captiva)
+ Amazing features & huge huge space
+ VFM MPV, seems way better than Innova
+ Maximum bling per rupee spent.. including panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate
+ Design. I like it, especially from rear
+ Road presence, its a big car
+ Price

- No 7 seats yet, else would be a hit among Taxi/Tour operator
- 10 inch screen. Its a major distraction and disaster waiting to happen
- Engine: Petrol is way too under-powered and diesel is harsh/noisy
- Body roll and wobbly ride
- Very low Petrol mileage
- Haunted past/legacy connection with General Motors (a dubious way to disguise & project its a British company to target gullible Indians) and poor reviews from international market with respect to Captiva Petrol

Tucson
+ Build quality
+ Reliability backed by 3 year warranty & service
+ Decent engine + transmission
+ Nice features including Panoramic sunroof and powered tailgate
+ Decent international reviews

- Road presence, difficult to differentiate with Creta
- dated & bland design, uncertainty over new face-lift coming to India (new face-lift already launched in 2018 and has extremely nice features)
- Hyundai's desire to sell this. Dealership doesn't seem to be interested in selling this (their brochure mentions a new color "Starry Night" but dealership says its not available and is for upcoming face-lift.. utter confusion

Nice thread. Finally a place where Skoda cars will score well as a product without being laced with its much maligned after sales.

I guess our official reviews have the positives, negatives listed out.
But like this thread intends, would be good if we have them listed them in one place.

Re: Indian Cars, their USPs and deal-breakers in your view

This was my list while shortlisting a premium petrol AT hatch earlier this year. All 3 were priced around 11L OTR bangalore during my purchase. These are my personal views after test driving each one for 2-3 times over 30-50kms. Polo wasn't considered due to cramped rear-seat & I wasn't confident having a DSG/DCT as my only car.

i20 CVT(USP: Looks & features):
+Awesome looks. If my monthly running was ~500/month, would have bought this just for the looks
+Premium interior quality
+Loaded with features
+Hyundai's peaceful ownership and excellent resale.
+ Good ride quality in city.

- A guzzler in CVT guise(as reported in ownership threads)
- Cramped rear seat compared to competition.
- CVT has considerable rubberband effect.
- Crash test failure of India built i20(3* with unstable bodyshell) was a shocker.

Baleno CVT(USP: Its a Maruti):
+Excellent petrol engine. Good drive-ability & most frugal
+Quite Spacious. Better than some compact sedans
+Maruti's peace of mind ownership & excellent resale
+Featur-wise pretty loaded
+Is quicker off the mark than both i20 & Jazz.

- Build quality doesn't exude confidence for the price. Ok for in-city usage but I need/use only 1 car for both city/highway.
- Interior quality felt inferior to competition
- Rubberband effect felt pretty pronounced.

Jazz CVT(USP: Smooth & reliable engine/gearbox):
+Tried and tested engine gearbox combo. Oldest CVT setup(among the 3) that has been reliable as per ownership reports.
+ Segment best space inside. Can put some CSUVs/CSs to shame.
+ Paddle shifters and cruise control prove pretty usable in hilly/highway drives.
+ Is decently frugal. Returning 11+ kmpl city mileage in bangalore. Highways return anything from 15-19kmpl depending on road conditions.
+ Liked the suspension tuning. Not too hard, nor too cushy.
+ Although exact indian version's NCAP results aren't available, AMAZE's 4 star(with structurally stable bodyshell) rating gives confidence as Jazz feels built better in every respect.
- Honda has been really stingy in feature-loading this car. Missing projectors/DRLs & rear adjustable headrests on a 11L car is criminal in today's date.
- 6 month service interval , whereas its twin(almost) WR-V has standard 10000kms/1 year service interval.
- Being a heavy car(1066kgs for CVT), feels a bit sluggish off the mark inspite of having the most powerful engine(90PS) among the three.
- Rubberband effect is evident although didnt find it as bad as the other two.
- It begs for a bigger engine. 1.5L CVT would have made this the perfect car.

With Jazz I do feel shortchanged on features front at times. But considering I keep my cars for long term(8+ years), the sorted mechanicals took precedence & Jazz became the best compromise in terms of build quality, smooth engine/gearbox, A.S.S availability & decent mileage.

+ Punchy engine delivering unbelievable FE
+ Bullet proof reliable Maruti's, especially Nexa, ASC

+ After market maps easy swaps
+ Takes most rough roads easily
+ Excellent handling even on unmentionable speeds
+ Long service intervals
+ Very practical car

- Pathetic lights
- Turbo lag
- Insulation could've been better
- Hit or miss looks
