Well said ... although I would say that the Fortuner does demand a hefty sum in totality so I am very eager to see where the new entrants will be.

That said, with MG it will certainly be a case of you get what you pay for so will have to wait and watch *fingers crossed*

India-Bound MG D90 Gets 2.0L Turbo Diesel Engine

Quote:
SAIC owned sub-brand Maxus has launched a new 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine for its three-row body on frame SUV, D90 in China, at the 2019 edition of the Guangzhou International Motor Show.

Internationally, Maxus D90 was earlier only offered with a 2.0-litre petrol unit that churns 225 PS of max power and 360 Nm peak torque, and can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed auto transmission.

The new 2.0-litre diesel engine however, will produce 161 PS of maximum power. The said engine also comes with an all-wheel drive configuration.
MG may not get this engine option in India though, as it'll be seen as being less powerful than the Fiat 2.0 doing duty on the Hector.

If it gets a 2.0 diesel with lesser power internationally as well - then the 2.0 Multijet from the Hector could power this engine here. Economies of scale for MG as well.

But they better figure out a good automatic transmission. A diesel manual can be declared dead on arrival itself.

MG Maxus D90, 2022 Hector to get in-house 2.0-litre diesel in India.

Quote:
SAIC has developed a new diesel powertrain for the full-size D90 SUV. In-house-developed engine could replace the Hector’s FCA-sourced diesel later.
Quote:
sources also reveal that the SAIC Group’s new 2.0-litre diesel engine will likely be introduced on the MG Hector in our market in 2022, just in time for the RDE emission norms that'll come into effect the year after. This will give the Hector, which already enjoys a size advantage in its segment, a definite step up over its rivals in terms of performance too.

This is terrible news for Fiat India which is effectively nothing more than an engine manufacturer.

The 1.3MJD will be dead in a few weeks. Tata is anyway having a tough time with the 2.0 MJD and its BS6 compliance, and is working on getting the good old Variocor ready for BS6. Now if its only other major client, MG, also gives up on this engine, it will be left only in the Jeep Compass and its minuscule volumes. That is simply unsustainable.

The upcoming 2.0 Diesel engine that will be powering the Maxus D90 has some stellar figures - 218 HP and 480 NM of Torque. Much more than the competition. MG is really shaking up the SUV segment.

I think MG did their homework well in this case. The SUV has better power figures, is longer, wider, taller with an even longer wheelbase.

Having said that, Alturas had a lot of things going for it and even with very aggressive marketing it didn't make a dent in Fortuner sales so this is going to be an interesting watch.

But then, Kia arrived with Seltos and it proved that if you have a good product then Indians would welcome even an unknown brand with open arms and Seltos isn't a cheap car to begin with.

The only reason why I'd want MG or Kia to give us great SUVs is because Toyota has enjoyed the monopoly too long and there is no variety in this segment at all.

Lastly though, Endeavour is a far superior product but even it couldn't affect Fortuner's sales so I'm hoping against hope here.

A recent review by caradvice Australia on the LDV D90 calls the engine laggy and the gearbox lethargic and lots of room for improvement in the ride.

Based on the size, it could be VFM but outperforming its nearest competitors is doubtful.

Well you last statement itself clarifies to a good extent buddy. People will buy better products, but then in a certain segment; most likely lower. But for most people in our country spending near and over 35 lacs, aura of the brand and product, road presence, time tested reliability, cult following, and resale value (to lesser extent though) will matter. That is where Toyota Fortuner shines above the competition.

The review in the link is for a 2.0 litre petrol engine. The India bound Maxus D90 will get a 2.0 diesel engine. Going by the specs, it's going to be a good performer.

What aggressive marketing are you talking about? Try asking few of your not so auto-conscious friends what they think about the Mahindra Alturas, I bet they would be surprised.

Mahindra really did not push the product through like they should have. They got the product right, but messed up marketing it properly. The target audience knows nothing about the SUV at all! I have seen Ford erect hoardings near airports, and display their flagship SUV's off-roading skills on road shows with special invite to the elite crowd - that gets their attention.

I really think MG got the marketing bit right with the Hector, and going by that track record they will shout and trumpet their flagship SUV and make sure it is noticed. And with the spec sheet looking good, it will also make a decent case for itself.

iPads & what not being gifted to magazine reviewers, youtubers and really trying to ensure that reviews are all positive. We all know the power of youtube & social media in pushing sales.

Marketing is not just about direct advertisement so I wasn't referring to that section of billboards/tv adverts.

It appears to be larger than the Hector and features a black octagonal grille with wraparound headlamps and a dual-tone front bumper with red inserts. The MG Gloster will be a rebadged version of the Maxus D90 SUV. MG to pit it against Land Cruiser Prado and Jeep Grand Cherokee, but not against the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour !
Quote:
MG Motors is lining up three new SUVs for the Indian market, including a luxury offroader that will be priced upwards of Rs 40 lakh. MGs Chinese parent SAIC plans to bring in the Maxus D90 SUV to India and the car to be pitted against some of the top luxury brands will be called Gloster.

As far as we see it, we feel that the Gloster will have the capability, strength and size to compete with models such as Land Cruiser Prado and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chaba said.
IMO, that is some clever positioning from MG, the chosen rivals themselves will sell in very minuscule numbers in India. Bigger rivals rises its bar in the eyes of buyers, even if it sells in small numbers then also it can match numbers of the competitors, if it sells in good numbers then it can be called a super success against Prado and Grand Cherokee!

Either ways it will turn out be a win-win for MG, whether it sells in good numbers or not they can still call it a success and everyone had to agree with them, what a clever strategy.

Curious to know how it was positioned in other international markets.

Note that these were strictly my thoughts.
