re: Scoop! MG Gloster SUV spotted in India - To rival Fortuner & Endeavour

Details about the MG Gloster

Quote:
The large SUV will have immediate appeal for the ‘size does matter’ crowd. Measuring over 5m in length, the Gloster is longer than the full-size Toyota Land Cruiser 200, let alone the Toyota Fortuner the MG will likely be pitted against. The big and imposing look is shared with the Maxus D90 (Maxus and MG come under the umbrella of SAIC) but MG has tweaked the styling for India. The grille, wheels and chrome highlights have been redone for the MG. The SUV on display had a more angled version of MG's standard grille design lathered with chrome, LED DRLs atop slim headlight units, a large glasshouse and roof rails. The rear has a clean design, with slim tail-lamp units and a wide tailgate. The Gloster sits on a light truck ladder-frame chassis.

The large exterior dimensions allow for a large cabin and there’s lots of room in each of the Gloster’s three rows. Also impressive is the quality level, which is easily a few notches above what we’ve seen in the Hector; material quality too is up there with German cars.

In true MG fashion, there will be an overload of features too. While the final spec of the Gloster for India is yet to be announced, the display car’s equipment list was telling. Adaptive LED headlights, LED DRLs, a panoramic sunroof, heated wing mirrors, gesture controlled tailgate, ambient lighting, three-zone automatic air-conditioning, an 8.0-inch multi-information instrument cluster display, conncected car tech and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system were part of the package. Front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions can also be expected. MG has promised an extensive list of personalisation options as well.

Versions sold abroad come with a 224hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. For India, MG is expected to introduce its own in-house-developed 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel that delivers 218hp and 480Nm of torque. This engine was first shown at the Guangzhou motor show in China last year and is understood to be derived from Fiat’s Multijet II engine that powers the Hector.

MG will assemble the Gloster in India at its Halol plant in Gujarat, but it is learnt that local content will be limited to a few components only. The Gloster will likely be priced upwards of Rs 35 lakh and could be pitched as an upgrade to the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, rather than a direct rival.

The Gloster is the first car in its segment to come with active safety features. It gets blind-spot detection and autonomous emergency braking in addition to a full suite of airbags. In fact, the Australia-spec model received a 5-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). So that addresses the safety aspect as well. It'll be interesting to see how it's priced and what it's pitted against.

Woah! This is really nice & soothing to eyes in black!

This will be a serious competition to Endeavour & Fortuner.

Interiors also look cool. I never liked the Hector as it felt disproportionate from almost all the angles. Gloster seems to be more better in terms design wise.

Is it me or the rear resembles the Alturas? The taillights look very identical.

Not just you, the moment I saw the rear, first thing coming to my mind was exactly this

But I heard in some videos that they are looking to position it above Fortuner and Endeavor, don't know how smart of a move that is.

Lol! They are not fooling anyone by calling this an 80-90L vehicle.

“With Gloster, we are trying to bring an INR 80-90 lakh product to the market at around Rs 50 lakh and plan to launch it during Diwali this year. Gloster will be a low-volume game. To keep reinforcing the brand and show technological prowess we will drive in new products here. The volume should be around 5,000-6,000 annually.”

- Rajeev Chaba, President & MD, MG Motors India
The LDV D90 costs about 16.5L in Australia, and Maxus D90 costs about 17.5L in the middle east.

Even factoring our taxes, this product in the MG avatar can utmost compete against the Fortuner and nothing more. Probably trying to create a hype of a luxury product and they making it sound like brilliant VFM when finally positioned against the Fortuner.

Rexton pricing seems apt for the size and features on offer.

They're just testing the waters with the announcement. They're just going to pit this against the Fortuner and hope that the ultra luxury tag sticks. They claim to price it over 50 lakhs and then want to sell 6000 units a year?

Do not be surprised by a 40lac + price tag! Having worked in the GM India ecosystem previously, Rajeev Chaba and team are stalwarts at believing their own hype, followed by unrealistic pricing, riding the product novelty wave for 2-3 months, build up unsold stock, rampant discounting and finally kill the said product. At Chevrolet this product life-cycle from product introduction to ultimate cull took around 3 years.

Back then they spent a lot of time convincing the dealerships and themselves as to how 'Chevrolet' was a premium brand. It was not, in this connected day and age people know what brands are or will find out sooner or later.

Chevrolet India had perfected the art of pumping air up their own backsides and exploding, looks like MG have inherited the same.

MG, Price it on par with Alturas, then you will find some takers. Anything more than that will be a recipe for disaster. MG as a brand doesn't have the same bling factor it had during the launch days of Hector. Don't become greedy so soon !

I don't think they'll move half of their sales target if its priced at around 50 lacs. Hector was feature loaded but wasn't overpriced as such, and the consumers happily gave the booking amount.

I haven't searched what all they would offer for 50L, but I'm pretty sure there are many who would, in my opinion, prefer the three pointed star over the MG in that price range.

Quad exhausts? Is that an MG or an A-MG?

Hope it's not one of those bumpers appliqués with fake pipes and diffusers that Creta and i20 owners have been accessorising with.
