BMW has introduced BS6 compliant petrol engines across its entire product range. Local production of BS6 diesel vehicles has also started at BMW's Chennai plant.



According to company, BS6 diesel variants will be introduced ahead of the April 2020 deadline, when BS6 emission norms come into effect. Production of diesel variants of the BS6 5 Series and 6 Series Gran Turismo has also already commenced, while production of the BS6 X1 is also expected to kick off soon.

Models launched in 2019 are available in both BS4 and BS6 variants. Next year, prices of BS6 models will be hiked by up to 6%.

Interesting why is BMW not selling it's BS-VI diesel vehicles yet.
Mercedes has been selling it's BS-VI S-Class for about an year now.

Is the technology so different between the two? Both would use SCR based exhaust treatment systems I presume. So, if Mercedes's BS-VI diesel vehicles can run on BS-IV fuel, why not BMW's ? Is BMW playing it safe ?

Forget about Mercedes, even KIA is selling its BS-VI diesel which can run on BS-IV fuel.

What's the typo Sahil? From the press release it looks like only Petrol BS6 is available right now and diesel manufacturing is started but only available closer to the BS6 deadline.

The petrol BS6 news is old as mentioned. The diesel now being dispatched with BS6 is the real deal IMO.

For me the real fun will start when both models are available
at the same time so the choice of which to buy is MINE. E.g.

A. X1 Diesel BS4, with huge discounts albeit limited stocks with same fantastic twin turbo engine
B. A future ready BS6 with updated tech, features, emission control tech but 6% premium

The window for the above will be short, perhaps 2-3 months but for buyers it would be interesting.

Well, they published but never released Diesel engines in Euro 6 for 6 cylinder models at least. These are being introduced from next week and contrary to their earlier press release, prices for X5 and 6 GT are being kept the same for Euro 6 models. Instead of the increase in prices, they have removed some of the features. As an example, X5 - Diesel - X-Line losses Sky Lounge, Luggage compartment package & leather on the instrument panel will be replaced with Sensatec. Comfort seats will now be Sports seats.
