Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

Anybody else disappointed to see the lack of petrol engine?? Agreed that there are few buyers but still the 6 cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology was a very good offering and there isn't a reason why they should have dropped it!

I suspect they will offer petrol engines only in the AMG disguise although I hope better sense prevails and they do launch normal 450 petrol version later.

Also, as suspected earlier, the rumors were correct this is being marketed as LWB. However whether it is genuinely a LWB or they are marketing it on technical grounds that compared to the previous gen its a LWB is yet not clear.
So putting some numbers to this confusion:

Wheelbase:-
GLE - 2995mm
X5 - 2975mm

Overall Length:-
GLE - 4925mm
X5 - 4922mm

I suppose the above will prove that the GLE is actually not a LWB. its just a longer than previous gen wheelbase. Mercedes is offering this as the only wheelbase in the portfolio.
Also a quick look at the MB USA and other country websites will show you the same length of the car without the LWB moniker.

So it seems Mercedes India is using LWB as a leverage to capitalize and carry forward from the success of E-Class. Smart wordplay though. As evident, many people including BHPians are falling for this.

Also, i suppose the GLE 400 is launched as a CBU with a Hip Hop edition moniker just to give it more media / social media coverage. They wouldnt have really imported too many units of it.

I don't see why anyone would buy a 2 litre mammoth SUV for 73 lakhs ex-showroom.

A friend and I were having an argument yesterday about this and I said that the X5 and Q7 is better VFM, he replied that "not all people care for performance, they prefer comfort and luxury", I simply reminded him of the XC90 which offers far more and after discounts is around the same price. He had to agree.

Another dilemma that I am unsure of is, when they launch the GLS, will it be cheaper than the GLE 400d version?

Going by these prices, it is clear that Mercedes is positioning the GLE in such a way to push the big fat GLS into the S Class price segment. I will expect it to start at around 1cr ex showroom. These guys sure are masters of minting money in a slow market.

Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

Sorry mercedes, but bad pricing for the 400d. X7 is cheaper and is a bit more of car for the price. The usp of e class is the e220 rear seats which had all the comforts and features of 350d. There should atleast have been a gle300d with electric reclining rear seats and maybe 360 camera for the price, even if they wanted to miss out on front memory seats and other features. An x5 3.0d with all the features is available for not so much more. The biggest usp of the gle300d unlike the e-class is lost here.
Does anyone know whether the gle300d has manually reclining rear seats at least?

Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

While the ex-showroom pricing of the CKD GLE 300d at ₹ 74L and the CBU GLE 400d at ₹ 1.25C can be justified, 7 airbags in the former without a 360 parking camera vs 9 airbags with the 360 camera in the latter?!!! Seriously Mercedes? No chest & pelvis airbags for the rear passengers? At this price point?

A better, more powerful engine, the E-active body control, AEB, energising packages, seat contouring etc. etc. are fine for the top ‘Hip-Hop’ 400d variant, but I can never get over this sort of silly equipment list on safety, that too from a brand like Mercedes The 300d misses out on seat ventilation also.

With regard to pricing, the V167 GLE 300d is almost on par when compared to the X5, Q7, V90 and Discovery diesel entry level models, atleast on paper.

At this rate, Mercedes are most probably going to considerably increase the prices of the X167 GLS close to 1.5 crores OTR, I hope the X7’s (now reasonable) pricing will make them be realistic about it. For now, the price of the GLE CBU 400d is ok for entry CBU, but Mercedes really need to localise the GLE 400d with similar equipment level to keep the price at around ₹90L - ₹1C maximum - a premium of ₹50L right now over the 300d is just too much!

As the old saying goes. There is no replacement for displacement. The 6 cylinder X5 looks like a steal compared to the 4 cylinder GLE.

Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

Mercedes-Benz India has introduced two new range-topping variants on the new-generation GLE SUV. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC is priced at Rs. 88.80 lakh, while the 400d 4MATIC is priced at Rs. 89.90 lakh.

Martin Schwenk, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, "The locally made LWB GLE 450 4MATIC and the 400 d 4MATIC thus make important additions to our GLE SUV range and will further attract customers who seek comfort, luxury and off-roading prowess in their SUV.

Good launch. I was hoping they were going to bring a better equipped gle 300d later with electric reclining rear seats, 360 camera and the works, but this is even better. X5 will definitely feel the heat now.
I only wish they had equipped with the Burmester audio too.

Weren't the GLE450 & GLE400d already available? It just seems like they started the local assembly of these cars in India. Perhaps they didn't want a situation where the GLS400d undercuts the GLE400d.

Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

Guts to launch such high priced CKDs during these times. They are timing it just before the GLS launch and have priced it exactly as what the outgoing GLS350d was at few months ago 88L ex-showroom, which had a further hefty discount. At this rate, the new GLS coming this month will probably be 1cr+ ex-showroom
I wish car makers would learn that the times bumping up prices and segmentation are gone, you are only inviting bigger discounts to start to clear stocks.

A price conscious strategy will help the luxury segment revive. Selling a GLE for the price of a GLS is absurd at this point.

Re: The next-gen Mercedes GLE-Class, now launched at 73.70 lakhs

I think those who can afford this should go right ahead. A six cylinder with 325bhp and 700Nm may not be around in the near future. Mercedes's engine lineup isn't that exciting in any segment right now and pretty sure that down the road they'll have only the 4 cylinder 300d available.

Customers who go for six cylinder models are usually seeking the best, and it has never been cheap. Inflation adjusted, these prices are par for the segment.

They do this to hide the discounts behind walls so that they can basically price gouge all unsuspecting buyers.

It is the typical old school lala mentality where you are forced to bargain like buying vegetables at a vegetable market .

Transparency and customer purchase experience is all but dead.

Overpriced like anything! The X5 makes for a far better buy for self drivers no matter which way you look at it plus discounts would be higher on the beemer given its been around for sometime now.
