According to a media report, Skoda is planning to unveil a concept SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is likely to be based on the MQB A0 IN platform and could be launched by the end of next year.



In addition to the new SUV, Skoda is also planning to introduce a notchback at the beginning of 2021. This car will also based on the low-cost MQB A0 IN platform. Both cars will be manufactured locally.

As part of the India 2.0 project, the VW Group lead by Skoda is investing 1 billion euros in India to localize the A0 platform. The carmaker aims to source 90% of the parts from local suppliers. It is also setting up a new R&D centre near Delhi.

We admire the guts and resilience of Skoda's Indian subsidiary. Each model sells not more than 1000 units on an average. It has been so since the past couple of years. Only the Fabia sold a few thousand units on an average, during its prime years.

Despite such a lukewarm response from the market, it continues to lug on and launch newer models.

We only hope Skoda publicises its USP that is "best safety in the respective class" and lower it's spares and maintenance costs as charged by the dealers. The low quality build of some of the best sellers is slowly making customers aware of the safety aspects and some are repelling such best best sellers.

Skoda needs to encash and gain customers by proper marketing.

Amazed at how Skoda (and Honda, Toyota etc.) were caught totally off guard by the market shifting to crossovers & SUVs. Skoda has spent too much time on sedans and desperately needs a crossover / SUV in the <20 lakh segment.

I think Skoda is very happy selling lesser units of highly profitable premium cars. As an example, management is satisfied with the Kodiaq's performance.

What is even more amazing to me is how spectacularly Skoda had managed to time the exit of Fabia in premium hatchback and Yeti in compact SUV category just before these two became mainstream.

According to Zac Hollis, Director - Sales, Service and Marketing, Skoda Auto India, an India-specific SUV based on the MQB A0 IN platform will be launched in Q2 2021.

A concept SUV based on this low-cost platform is likely to be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV will be launched before the next-gen Rapid.

The notchback is the next generation Rapid (Vitrus for VW) coming in 2021.

With the premiere of the VISION IN, ŠKODA is giving an outlook of its SUV future in India at Auto Expo 2020 in New Delhi (5 to 12 February 2020). The 4.26-metre-long study offers a foretaste of a compact SUV specially developed for the Indian market. A design sketch provides a first impression of the concept vehicle’s interior.

The sketch shows a wide dashboard arranged on several levels, which echoes the symmetrical contours of the ŠKODA grille in the centre. The colour orange, which inspires vitality and creativity, is used extensively throughout the interior, for example, on the centre armrest and door panels. The chrome-plated ventilation nozzles on the side are also eye-catching, with fine ventilation louvres spanning almost the entire width of the instrument panel. In addition to the large, free-standing central screen and virtual cockpit, a new crystalline element on the instrument panel creates an optical highlight. The three-spoke multifunction steering wheel features buttons and knurl wheels following ŠKODA’s new operating concept. The reduced and clearly structured centre console has a small control lever for gear selection.


The ŠKODA VISION IN is the first vehicle to be based on the new localised sub-compact platform of the MQB A0 IN modular transverse matrix, which also forms the inter-brand basis of various ŠKODA and Volkswagen models. In developing the model, the Czech manufacturer has explicitly focused on meeting the wishes and requirements of customers in the Indian market.
