Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

Sorry to say, but with many of them being totally non-sense entries in the thread, only few are deserving. While I agree that a single person may not be able to make an exhaustive list - but this thread should've been a poll. There is still a possibility to pause this thread and convert the existing list of vehicles into a poll.

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

IMHO the following are the cult vehicles of India:

Cars-
Tata Safari
Gen 1 Honda City VTEC (facelift)
Fiat Palio 1.6
Mahindra CJ leading upto Thar
Gypsy

Bikes:
Yezdi Roadking
Yamaha 350

For me, cult vehicles have nothing to do with sales figures or trendsetters, but rather vehicles that tug the heartstring of enthusiasts to such an extent that they will buy one today too, overlooking any faults in the vehicle itself.

Of the lot, the Safari is the only one ive owned (two in fact)

While I agree with your statement, for me CULT is a following of masses towards a particular vehicle not limiting to a brand. The following is undisputed and must have created history/ripples back in the days!

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

There was a time when there were only a handful of manufacturers churning out bikes and cars for the whole nation. Premier Automobiles, Hindustan Motors, Standard Motors were the only players in the 70's and early '80s.

Premier Padmini (aka Fiat 1100D) is my addition to the list... Once as common as potholes, today very few remain and fewer are seen on the streets regularly.

The Premier Padmini, apart from being the darling of the masses, also was the favourite among rallyists, given its mod friendly nature.

Its hard to imagine that this car continued to ship out from the plant with an engine that debuted in 1937!

And here's a magazine cover that I received on a Whatsapp group that has another cult car - the Standard 2000

Tears in my eyes to see so many of the cars that I have been the 'Product Guy' for on this list. What else can an old petrol head wish for!

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

I nominate the Maruti Jimny. The belief in the eventual sale of Jimny in India approaches the status of a mystery faith based religion. It is a mystery why Maruti won't manufacture and sell Jimny in India. And, that it will be coming to India is a leap of faith that only of a small pocket of radical followers, Jimnists, advocate.

We may not have the car but we definitely have cult lift-off here!

The Jimny faithful claim that last year a Jimny rose driverless out of the Ganges at Rishikesh and made its way to the Delhi Auto Expo. As it passed villages along the way lepers were healed, drivers started driving on the LEFT side of the road at blind curves, the price of onions went down 23 rupees per kg and Gandhi and Elvis were seen eating palak paneer at a dhaba in Panipat. Cats started living with dogs.

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

Moderators, can we have a list of all the Vehicles(not all, only real cult ones) mentioned here pinned at top of the page, please?

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

I think the Skoda Yeti First Gen, needs mention here too. It was indeed an Iconic vehicle and will reach Classic/ Cult status soon.

The S Cross 1.6 also deserves mention. That will become a Classic/ Cult vehicle too.

The Chevy Forester - another vehicle that deserves mention for the same reasons.

These may not have been MASS vehicles, but so what?

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

This is certainly not short of a CULT following. I came across some really good ads when this beauty was launched and this is the ultimate...

Since no one mentioned it, may I add the first fully faired, LC4V affordable track tool to the list.

Re: The Cult Vehicles of India!

Skimmed through few pages in the descending order. No one mentioned CI Royal Enfield Bullet 350? This was (and still is) a cult bike. Okay, so looked at my garage- I have three cult machines: Fat Boy, Safari Dicor and a CI Bullet Electra. Last one is almost 14 and Safari is 10 year old. Both still munching miles happily.

In my mind, cult status is not about sales numbers but about aspirational vehicles, the ones that keep you dreaming and drooling, the ones you regret never buying, the ones whose posters you still stare at, the ones you hope to own once in your lifetime.

Excluding foreign and expensive vehicles:

In bikes: Jawa/Yezdi, RD350, RX, Shogun, Bullet, Karizma, Pulsar, Duke, Interceptor

In cars: Zen, Esteem, Gypsy, Sierra, Swift, Scorpio, Lancer, OHC, Palio, Punto, Ikon, Fiesta (older one), Thar
