Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Sad to see a very capable SUV and to be honest the real SUV, Compass going down month by month.

FCA is really jinxed in our country ever since they partnered with Tata and then decided to go solo. Rather than luck, one may also say their management and efforts are far below the competitors.

With no other car in the near future, JEEP too shall face the same fate as Fiat.

Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

November seems to have been yet another decent month for wholesale auto sales. But let’s remember that at a time when the industry is going through the BS6 transition, and different players / models are in different positions vis-a-vis that change, reading too much into month on month sales numbers is not advisable.

Some good news - per a dealer friend, retail volumes surprised on the upside in October, with several models having very low system inventory. Further, with some manufacturers not planning to shift to BS6 production until February, they may wish to handle the supply of additional BS4 volumes very carefully. On the other hand, manufacturers which have shifted to BS6 will be looking to build stocks with dealers - and hence may be operating full steam ahead, in order to benefit from potential stock outs on competing products.

I think we will need to wait for the February or March sales reports to get a better sense for where people stand post the BS6 transition.

Diving into the data, I was pleasantly surprised to see the figures for the Honda Civic (steady in the ~350 units range) and the Toyota Camry (picking up to close to 100 units). These players seem to be doing well in the context of their segments.

I was driving around the Whitefield area and was astounded by the number of Civics out there.

Lots of transients will be established to stabilise in the next few months as markets shift to BSVI. So clearly sales on diesel will come down and it remains to be seen when the new equilibrium is established post this change.

Till then I think it would hard to speculate on sales (especially diesels). Case in point: Would be good to watch sales for Creta. (Apart from Kia onslaught, BSVI may also play a part)

Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Its sad to see the Harrier in 3 digits really. But then is there really any hope left for the brand for the 12+ lakh segment.I am sure the Harrier is not the best thing out there but it is not really that bad. Also there is no shortage of people willing to take a risk in that bracket with their money. Just look at the seltos doing 5 digits and the hector (Chinese brand) doing 4 digits as well. I am worried even the altroz may turn out to be a dud for them if any other brand brings in something fresh in that segment.

Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Clearly with the onslaught of some newbies such as KIA, MG and the old warlords the Maruti and Hyundai in the market, there seems to be a grave danger of a dead end in the next five years for some of the current laggards in the likes of Ford, Renault, VW, Skoda and even Mahindra and Tata.

A serious take on them-

Tatas - Even with good products they fail to shine and breakout. Harrier, Hexa and Tigor for a few which should have been in a different league all together. Lethargic and sometimes bad customer service by some prehistoric dealer network hits them hard. They should quickly shore up their entry sedan segment which would face vacuum with Etios exiting. Put some sharp focus back on Harrier and Hexa to fight the Endeavours and Fortuners hard.

Mahindras - They are just sliding down the ramp and how. Their models are either too quirky like KUV100 or over confident in XUV300. It would not be long before their old workhorses such as the Bolero and Scorpios give way and then its shutters down unless they buckle up. The XUV300 needs to be course corrected as it has great potential and so is the Marrazzo which is a good product and has the potential to fight the Ertigas and Innovas.

Renault / Nissan / Datsun - They have to consolidate into a single roof and put their best foot forward else shut shop sooner or later. Focus more on Kicks and maybe revive their Sunny sedan. They can offer multi segments such as A segment - Go, Kwid B - Kicks, Triber etc something aka Maruti which will give them more efficiencies and scale under a single roof.

Skoda / VW - Again these two would probably do better with merging of their portfolios, getting better economies of scale even at the marketing end. Maybe they can have a showroom for the premium range (aka Nexa) and other to sell sub 20 lakh range which can help them target on the right customer.

Honda - Have a big opportunity to push harder into the entry sedan segment with their Amaze which can be a two horse race with the Dzire capturing the market. Their fantastic Jazz range of vehicles can do better with more rationalization and innovation to compete strongly with the i20s.

Toyota - They have some deep pockets and bread winners in the names of Innova and Fortuner and may be content with those segments. However seems like they are hedging safe with some contract manufacture of hatches so that they can exit at will. Seems like they are playing to be a niche manufacturer.

Ford - One of the prime candidates to follow the Fiat / GM route unless they kick themselves into action. Some areas which can revive their fortunes are the Aspire sedan which is a very competent product and the good old sturdy Ecosport with a refresh which can take them to a comfortable four digit mark along with the Figo range.

IMHO this is not surprising all all. Jeep Compass variant mix is sad. Ideally they should have come out with a 1.6 reasonably loaded automatic version at a slight premium to kia/creta. But no ! - Jeep was too full of themselves. They thought that the indian population would lap up their expensive compasses.

This is just a failure of their planning. The results are not surprising at all.

Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The sales chart for this month draws a very mixed response from my side. Whilst I am glad that Kia has laid down a firm foot with Seltos and even as the Hector continues its good run. Seeing the Triber grow stronger with each passing month, Renault would reinforce its confidence in the Indian market and perhaps bring much more competent products at our disposal. Seriously, I want the Kwid to bounce back to the golden numbers which it had just few years ago.
Things stand a shade darker insofar as the C2 sedans are concerned. All three big ones viz., Ciaz, City and Verna have seen steep fall in sales whilst the Rapid and Vento have also faded substantially. Needless to mention the Sunny and Linea have become irrelevant since time immemorable and the recently launched Yaris also seems to follow suit.
The XL6 and XUV 3OO seems doing unexpectedly low numbers. Time to pick up sales or perish before the long run.

I've been Seltos everywhere in the last few months. Kia also has got the dealerships spot on. Overall a case study on how to launch a new brand in India.

Re: November 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata numbers seem to reflect their inability to make a choice at all, as opposed to the right or wrong one. I own a Hexa and here is my take on why TML fails:

1. Too much time between design and launch - with no rethinks
Tata Motors doesn't think far enough ahead and clearly doesn't do upgrades during the development process...and it shows:
a. Archaic touchscreen - the Hexa featured (at least my version) a resistive 5.5" touchscreen while every peer was on minimum 7" or more with capacitive touch that was far more responsive. Maybe this was de rigeur when designed - but why not upgrade?
b. No Apply CarPlay. Said "coming soon" in Jan 2017... and I'm still waiting. More shocking yet, this was played out a second time with the Harrier! Insane.

2. No real choice made at all in terms of positioning
TML isn't the "first mover" in any segment. Which means that, as a follower, it should be choosing which niche to go for. Do they go for "beating the best" on specs? On price? On performance? In any competitive scenario, if you want to win, you have to choose that one place in which you will "lead" the market - a couple others in which you will "match" the market and on others, you try to stay there or thereabouts.

TML has done none of these. None of their cars can claim to be ANY of:
- Best in feature-set
- Best in performance (power, acceleration, comfort...)
- Most reliable
- The cheapest
- Best serviced / cheapest serviced

When you aren't topping ANY parameter, you just don't stand out. What factor could make you say, "Well, on this factor, TML just wins so convincingly that I'm sold"? TML seems to have tried to balance a number of factors creating a situation where each of their latest launches is "balanced", but just not a WINNER in anything at all!
