Skoda Rapid BS6 1.0L turbo-petrol launch in April 2020

According to Zac Hollis, Director - Sales, Service & Marketing, Skoda Auto India, the carmaker will launch the Rapid with a BS6 compliant petrol engine in April 2020.

The Rapid BS6 is expected to get a new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo petrol engine. In the international market, this engine is available in two states of tune - 93 BHP / 160 Nm and 114 BHP / 200 Nm. In India, the engine could be paired with either a manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The next generation Rapid is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2021.

The present 105 BHP/ ~150 NM engine already takes away the fun of driving this other-wise well-rounded package. Downgrading the same to 93 BHP will just make it sluggish IMO and that's close to the Ciaz at the cost of being heavier than it. Hopefully the Skoda sees that the top seller in this segment( Petrol ) is the City with that beautiful 119 BHP i-vtec and that too being the oldest yet the costliest when it comes to variant to variant comparison.

Re: Skoda Rapid BS6 1.0L turbo-petrol launch in April 2020

While the VW group companies offer great cars in the higher segments, their mass market offerings are really going downhill. Not only are they too old by current standards, but a small 1.0L triple-cylinder turbo on a million rupee sedan . No matter what the argument, it is too small for this segment. Whether it suffers from turbo-lag or refinement issues, only time will tell, but these are also more complex to maintain in the long-term.

Meanwhile, the competition keeps making its powertrains better & better. The City is getting an improved 1.5L Vtec, the Ciaz has an excellent new 1.5L diesel and improved (over the 1.4) 1.5L petrol & Hyundai's engines are always top-class (especially the diesels).

Re: Skoda Rapid BS6 1.0L turbo-petrol launch in April 2020

The same 1.0 TSI engine in 115bhp tune will be plonked in the Polo GT I guess. Not sure if its better than the current engine.

Couldn't find much reviews of this 1.0 online which talks about performance compared to 1.2 . I saw one article where the OP tone is not favorable for the 1.0 (115bhp) compared to 1.2.

We are planning to get a Polo GT TSI to replace our aging Celerio AMT and I am now confused if I should go for the 1.2 TSI or wait for the BS6 1.0.

Help appreciated.

In my opinion, go for the 1.2 TSI now. You might even get good discounts in the months ahead. Even though very less is know about the 1.0, I'm pretty sure it won't be as good as the current 1.2 TSI. Four cylinders will definitely satisfy your enthusiasm more than three. The 1.2 TSI is a keeper.

Thanks for the advice. I don't see any discounts coming for the GT TSI, but still will start talking to dealers from Jan.

Same boat as yours. But somehow VW dealers arent interested in even calling back when I mention I am looking for a GT TSI. Forget discounts.

The current specs aren’t too bad by any book! It had/has one of the highest torque figures for a NA 1.6, pulls cleanly up mall ramps and steep hills with little fuss, even with the AC running. Sure, that turbo kick is missing and it’s not as eager as the City in the lower revs but post 4000 rpm it’s a totally different machine. The stability and grip is matched only by the likes of the Fiesta, Vento TDI/TSI and Linea.

Hope they launch the Rapid with a slightly more powerful version of the TSI doing duty in the Vento!

Skoda Rapid to get the 1.0L TSI from April conforming to the new emission norms..

The Skoda Rapid Matte Concept gets a matte paint job straight out of the factory, and this version will go on sale in India later in 2020.
