Translates to Rs 8800 to Rs 9000 per month.

And I thought my usage was on the lower side. How can <Rs 5000 even be an option?

I had that option thinking it would have the least votes but apparently it is the highest so far.

Like you even I have my doubts on how a car be driven under 5k/month. There may be few like the entry level cars which are not been driven more than 100-300 kms a month.

A single long drive in most cars would cost approximately Rs. 2450 for fuel - Diesel (35 L at RS. 70/lt and a drive of approximately 525 Kms) and Rs. 2800 for Petrol with an average RS. 80/ltr with an approximate range of 350 Kms.

Yearly insurance would be a minimum of 10k for a decently aged car with good IDV which makes it Rs. 850/month. Service would be again Rs. 3000 which makes it Rs. 250 a month.

Washing would be minimum Rs. 500 a month. Tolls again Rs. 500/mth.

This approximate calculations at minimum comes to about RS. 4500-4800.

Now all this is without EMI so with EMI it is hardly possible to own a car below RS. 5000/month.

Such a thought provoking exercise!

I have calculated for the three cars that we have in our family and the overall expense per month for the three cars put together has come close to Rs. 91000/ month. I must be spending 50% of this money and the remaining is shared by my brother and my father. So, I have voted for the last option. My portion of the expense should be around Rs. 45000 per month.

It is so surprising to see how much we have been spending on cars, owning relatively mass market cars without even realizing that we have been spending so much!

In addition to this we have three motorcycles and one scooter. Have not accounted for this. May be for some other time. This calculation itself was a little hard to digest.

Here is the calculation that I used. Please suggest if there are any mistakes here.
