I drive Elite I20 petrol. My expenses come in 5-10 k bracket.

The insurance cost of luxury cars was a real surprise for me. Two posts mentioned ~60000 per year for 5 series BMW that is more than 3-4 years old!

I drive a used 3rd Generation, 2013, CVT, petrol Honda city. No EMIs but few modifications like Android screen and reverse parking camera. I have amortized those expenses for a 3-year duration.

Fuel: 9000, I drive 30 km every workday in grueling Bangalore traffic. Monthly drive would be around ~1500 KM.
Insurance: 1000
wash: 400
Maintenance: 1000
Accessory: 800

Total:12200

Definitely, Eye-Opener thread.

My car usage has reduced a lot since I opted for public transport for my office commute. Usage is mostly in City and occasional Highways once/twice to our native and vacation.

Below are the breakups monthly.

Fuel - 2,500 ( Would normally fill for 2,500 in the month starting and would last easily for a month since I use only in weekends for short city commutes )

Service Costs - 2,000 (Generally I service my car in a local garage in which I procure all the required fluids, Filters and pay on labor alone. Yearly Alto won't cost Rs 5,000 for a General Service since the running is around 3,000 to 5,000 kms per year. )

Insurance - 500 (Insurance costs around 6,000 yearly which is roughly 500 per month)

Wash - 750 (Mostly I was myself. Twice a month I'll go for interior and Exterior wash/polish. This would cost around 1,500)

Tolls - 200 (Mostly the road trip would be once/twice a year and the total toll charges won't be more than Rs. 2,000)

Security - Roughly 300 per month.

2 Services annually: ~ Rs.15k
Insurance: ~ Rs.12k
Misc. : ~ Rs.3k
Monthly: ~Rs.12k

The results are really surprising, it seems majority are very well sorted financially. Think its time I should give up using car.

I barely take the car out on weekdays, ever since my office got re-located to ~40kms from my home. So, based on the bare minimum usage done on weekends and other occasional needs.

Car : Honda Amaze D 1st Gen (6yrs old)
Odo : 43k (~7k/year) [One of the reasons why I didn't want to upgrade to a discounted BS4 diesel in the ongoing sale, despite not liking some aspects about the car]

Expenses
Fuel : ~1500/month
Svc : ~700/month (8000-10000/year)
Tyre : ~350/month (assuming I spend 12k every 3 years)
Insur : ~550/month

TOTAL : 3100/month

Last two years together, I have spent more than 1.5 lakhs on my Punto, mostly on wear and tear parts, A/C cooling coil replacement, tyres etc.

So I have voted for 10K-15K per month category.

Insurance: 550
Services: 5000-6000
Tyres: 550
Fuel: 4000
Miscellaneous: 1000-1500

Most of the posts have ignored accidental repairs, accessories, detailing gear etc. You might not get this done every month, but just like service, you can divide and get monthly cost.

I am taking just 1 car(Highest running) of mine for the breakdown

Fuel: 12000
Service:1000
Tire:500
Washing:200(I wash car myself and get it washed once or twice a year outside)
Accidental repair/touchups: 500
Accessory/detailing gear: 500

Total:~15K a month.

Lowest running one would be about 5000 as per above and remaining would be 10-12K a month.

For my Honda City 2010 model AT, this is outgo per annum:

Service cost: ~10,000
Insurance: 5500
Car clean: 6000
Fuel: 30000
Consumables like tyre and battery: ~7000

Boils down to approx 4,800 per month

As his excellency Lord GTO mentioned in another thread, the longer, you buy a good car and retain it, the higher the savings you accrue. I can vouch that this is 100% true. In the first half, you will be squeezed by EMI, higher insurance costs, mods, bigger depreciation etc. The savings come esp towards the second half of the ownership cycle. Sadly, most people will trade the car before this golden period.

At the time, when I was looking to cut down expenses of my car, this thread pops up.

Brezza VDI

Expenses:

Car lease EMI - 22768
Fuel - 10,000 ( commute is 40kms one way)
Insurance - 1500
Service Cost - ~ approx around 4k
Wash - once in a month - 500
Total ~ 39,000

This is seriously burning my pocket. I am looking at returning the car back and use local train for my commute.

Total = 43,500 per month

Turning out to be quite expensive! And not to forget the repetitive price drops on Civic

The entire EMI cannot be reported as an expense. Only the interest component should be the expense part. Your cost of the car should be attributed to depreciation and depreciation should be taken as a cost.

I do about 2000 Kilometres a month on average and here is the breakdown of cost:

Fuel Rs 6 /Km = Rs 12000
Insurance Rs 8400/Year = Rs 700
Service Cost Rs 1 per KM = Rs 2000
Other maintenance Rs 1 per KM = Rs 2000

It comes to Rs 16700/ Month and I did not realise it before doing the calculation and voted for "between 5000 - 10000" option.

This amount does not include depreciation and interest cost which can also amount to Rs 25000/month so, car ownership is a major cost in ones life.
