Very interesting thread.
Every thread on team-bhp is special but this is one of those threads that keep me glued to team-bhp for long hours.

Now, I have a slightly different scenario. My present ride is a VW Passat Highline (last 10 months) on lease from the company that I work for. Here is the breakup of spendings on my ride.

1) EMI/Lease - Rs.62,000 pm (48months lease)
2) Fuel - Rs.6,000 pm (Approx 1500 KMs running every month)
3) Insurance - Rs.8000 pm (Around 100000 per year, born by my company for 4 Years i.e. for entire the lease period)
4) Service/Maintenance - Rs.2500 pm (~Rs22000 to 30000 every 15000 kms, 1st service in few weeks, very close now to 15000kms)
5) Detailing - Rs.1000 pm (50000 on Ceramic coating + 3M PPF on day 1, so rounding off to 1000 pm for a 4 year period).
6) Car Wash - Rs.1000 pm
7) Tolls/FastTag Recharges - Rs.1000 pm
8) Parking @ Home (Free @ Work) - Rs.2000 pm
9) Residual value at end of lease to complete transfer of ownership to my name: Rs5.5 lacs(with GST) - Rs.11500 pm

Since its a leased car from company, I get tax benefits on points 1, 2, 4, 6 (Slab: 30%).
Also item 8) is claimed under House Rent and Maintenance, where I again get around 30% tax benefits.
Item 3) is born by company so not counting. Also, I do not claim item 7) in maintenance out of sheer laziness.

Total Spending per month is 1+2+4+5+6+7+8+9 = ~Rs.87000 pm
Approximate Tax benefits for 1,2,4,6,8 = ~Rs.24000 pm

Spending on car after discounting tax benefits = ~Rs.63000 pm

My expenditure per month on couple of cars that I own...

1. Fuel Expenses = around 5000 - 6000 INR per month
2. Servicing & Maintenance Expenditure = 1800 INR, calculated monthly
3. Other miscellaneous expenses (Insurance, FasTag, Detailing, Nitrogen Top Up, Car Cleaning Guy Monthly Salary etc.) = 2500 INR, calculated monthly

Toyota Corolla Altis :

Depreciation 50k per year (bought used, will sell used ) ; monthly 4K expense technically.

Fuel - 300 KM per month ( Got a second car for everything else) translating to 3k per month; for an in-city FE of 7KmPL.

7K / M mandatory expenses so far.

Mods - Done with. Have spent enough earlier, and no longer depreciating. Expense = 0

Servicing - Stop Kidding, it's a Toyota and it's also a Corolla. Yeah you read it right. Alright, just for your smile, 1K per month, but thats enough okay ?

Total so far - 8 K / M

Mandatory consumptions - Engine oil 5k per year, translating to 400 bucks per month. Wiper P/Y - 700 bucks (Higher Side) per year translating to 60 bucks per month, and tyres, suspension so on and so forth, for an average of 1K/M will make it, (take a breather) 1500 bucks / M

Total - 9.5 K /M , which I will spend. NOTE

Oh , i forgot Insurance, 11 K per year - 1 K / M

Wash - To hell with u, I do it myself.

Total which I am spending - 10.5 K / M

Caveat :-
But i would have anyways needed a vehicle to travel to and from. Isn't it ?Let's consider that I would have spent 20 bucks per KM on a Uber or Ola, and for a travel of 15 KM daily (Diesel/Ltr costs around 60-65 bucks with an avg. FE of 12 KM/Ltr, translating to 5 bucks per KM and 15 bucks as the asset and maintenance cost), I would have spent 225 bucks for asset and maintenance daily, along with 75 bucks per day for fuel. BTW, i am considering travel during peak hours. 300 KM minimum a month would have costed me 6K /M at the least.

Above mentioned are just the material consumption. I am willing to let go of the quality music I listen to daily, my choice of travel hours (Flexibility) for which i pressing for no god damn value, and few other things which I won't mention. Put a price, eh ?

Oh with all the sacrifice above, i still spend 4.5 K per Month. But till the time u quantity what I didn't, I take that

I own a 2017 Grand i10 Asta (Petrol)

Washing Rs. 300 pm (society watchman)
+ Pressure washing Rs. 700 pm (Twice monthly @ Rs. 350/-)
Fuel Rs. 3500 approx. pm
Insurance: 12k = 1000 pm
Maintenance / Servicing: 8500 = 700 pm approx
EMI = Zero

So total: 6200/- per month roughly

Not taking into account tolls, tyre replacement, modifications or accessories & incidental repairs.

I have a 9.5 years Innova. No EMI.
1. Fuel - Rs 4000
2. Maintenance - Rs 1500
3. Insurance - Rs 1000
4. Others - Rs 500

Unless we actually put it down in black & white a lot of assumptions remain assumptions especially with our interests like cars, travel and food expenses.

Attached is the summary of my costs for both the cars. As of now none of the cars are having loans. My usage has shot up in last two years, and roughly has an an even split for both highway and city kms. Innova mostly does outstation trips with runs inside city being reserved for Swift. There are of-course some approximations, Innova service done by ex-chauffeur we hired for dad so the cost is more as I pay to chauffeur for whole day plus his food and all plus the service center manages to sell him stuff that is really not required too.

EMI should not be counted as part of monthly expenditure on car. It is repayment to a bank of a loan that you took to buy the car. You could also have bought the car outright.

I always considered my spends on my car LOW, but this was an eye opener. I had voted <5K, but I landed in 5-10K bracket considering few other essentials.

I was contemplating an upgrade (during Q4 / BS6 period). But now I need to rethink.

Car : i20 Petrol - 2009. Recently celebrated the 10th Anniversary .

NO EMI (for most of the years of ownership - 7 years )

Fuel - 5000 (Annual 9K kms, FE 12 KM/L)
Service - 1250 (Rs 15k a year)
Insurance - 500 (Rs 6k a year)
Washing - 600 (daily + periodic)
Accessories - 200
Perfume - 300 (Oh - this thing is a silent recurring cost. This is going to be DIY project now) Does anyone have suggestions for a DIY perfume?

Roughly adds to 7700 a month. This much vanishing every month (without EMI & big insurance cost).

Till last year I had 2 cars, a Good Old Santro & a Used Linea Tjet. The Santro was not getting used and the maintenance expense of Tjet was increasing and it was becoming a pain to drive in the city so I sold it off. After that my car expense has reduced considerably.

1. Insurance of 5000 per year.
2. Maintenance of ~15000 per year. As the car is 13 years old some parts need replacement.
3. Petrol is 2500 per month. My drive is about 500 km per month. Chocking traffic in Bangalore has made sure that we don't go out often within the city.
4. Washing about 5000 per year. I only get it washed at Car Wash centers once a month. Once a week, I use Japasu duster to clean it myself.
5. All Loans paid long back. No EMI

The total comes to 55000 per year i.e. 4584 per month.

We have started using Ola/Uber for long-distance travel within the city. For outstation travel, we have recently started using a reliable taxi driver.

I am sure the monthly expenses must have cut down by 1/3rd after selling off the Tjet. Superb car but all of your other plans go for a toss owning a Tjet apparently.

My Monthly Expenses:
20400 - EMI [7 years tenure]
Insurance - ~1500 [paid for 3 years at the time of purchase]
Service - 400 [Estimated, annual service costs will be around 5000, especially while under warranty as claimed by the dealer]
Monthly Petrol bills - ~1500
Washing - 100 per month [400.00 for a thorough foam+water wash, once in 4 months]


Hence voted for 20000.00 - 25000.00

I own a Jeep and a Pajero, among other cars. Please don’t ask me this question. You will send me into a panic attack. I might even start wondering if I make that much!





While on that topic, this is a genuine fear I face.




P.S: Sorry for not contributing to the thread, but thank you for opening it. From this New Year, I’ll start accounting the money spent on cars. (Tried it before on the Jeep and miserable failed)
