Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

Woke up to the front page Ad in the Times today announcing the lauch of the BS6 Innova. Was then browsing around the Toyota India website to check if they have updated the prices of thre BS6 variants. Shocked to see that the specificaitons as well as the price list only list the 2.4L Diesel engine - for both the manual and automatic versions!

The BS6 Fortuner has not been announced yet, so my guess is they have found it more important to get to the market fast with at least one BS6 engine fully tested and productionized, before competiiton such as Kia Carnival arrives with BS6 engines. It may also be to put more distance in terms of power and torque outputs between the Fortuner and Innova.

This may not be a bad thing. Most reviewers have found the 2.4 engine to be more peppy and agile compared to the 2.8. If the 2.4 Auto manages to retain this character, we may have an automatic car here that is more fun to drive yet more economical to purchase and own.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

So, the premium for BS6 over BS4 equivalent model is about 1.12 lakh.

2.4 GX MT BS 4 - 16.05
2.4 GX MT BS 6 - 17.17

This is the first diesel car we have seen in transition from BS4 to BS6.

Wonder whether the 1.15 lakh price difference will be an exception or a norm, once XUV 500 and Harrier BS6 prices are out.

Also would be interesting to see whether they have added any features to compensate for the price increase in like to like models.

Interesting observation. I used to wonder why they never offered the Automatic with the 2.4 before. The 2.4 also has very good performance and this will make sense for buyers who want to get an automatic Innova with better fuel efficiency than the 2.8.

I Just hope this is not some web-development error which will be corrected soon.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

This is confusing to say the least. The prices for the BS4 Innova were hiked by 20k for January 2020. Upon this, they now have announced the pricing for BS6. My dad is in talks with dealers in Bangalore and we were almost booking a BS4 ZX AT. Now this causes more dilemma and confusion since the premium on the BS6 looks pretty ok and except for the fact that there is no more a 2.8 engine, the ZX AT which I assumed would be crossing 30L OTR in Bangalore. Waiting to hear more from the dealers. I will update once that happens.

The 2.4 may be peppy for overtaking when engine in revved up, but the 2.8 has far better low end torque needed for off road driving, and highway cruising at moderate speed with engine ticking over at a low rpm.
The news that only 2.4 will continue is surprising. The 2.8 was already sold as BS6 in many other countries, where as 2.4 was under development.
It is very likely that the newly upgraded 2.4 is being launched now, and 2.8 which is already ready will shift over later.

The 2.8 has almost 24 ps more than the 2.4 . Considering the conservative tuning of Toyota AT boxes, wouldn't make a difference to the acceleration? I think the 2.4 AT will be a lot slower than the 2.8 AT, which is really a quick car by MPV standards.

As per the toyota site, only 2.4 engine is available. Its quite sad as I really liked the torque of the 2.8. With bs6 we'll see the end to a lot of engines.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

Toyota indeed has launched the BS6 Crysta only with the 2.4 engine and the 2.8 engine has been discontinued to keep the price band in check. The prices for diesel Crysta have increased by around 60k to 1.3 lakh rupees depending on the variant and those of petrol have increased by around 31k to 63k rupees.

The 2.4 engine uses an SCR (Selective Catalytic Converter) and a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to meet the BS6 norms. Do note that these prices are introductory and will be hiked later. Also the power and torque figures of the updated engine are unknown.

So my question is did Mr Raja blatantly lie about the supposed price hike of around 3 lakh rupees for the Crysta just to clear up the BS4 inventory?

Not just him, almost all executives who commented on the BS6 transition and the costs involved were blatantly lying. They are all guilty of spreading lies and indulging in scaremongering to encourage panic buying of their BS4 models.

Had India been a mature and developed economy with a stronger legal system, wonder if they could have gotten away with it. You can imagine the ruckus that would have been raised had Elon Musk made such remarks regarding the US market. The SEC as well as Wall Street would have been all over him.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

3 reasons why the 2.8 could have been dropped:
1. Sticker shock
2. 2.8 engine undergoing final testing/suppliers not ready for the anticipated demand
3. Customer feedback at dealerships asking for a 2.4 AT

I'll be surprised if we don't see a 2.8 AT in the Innova in a few months.

Got this info just a while back.

Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine-whatsapp-image-20200106-11.41.16-am.jpeg

  • The 2.8L Diesel AT is officially discontinued. It is highly unlikely to make a comeback.

  • Maintenance cost to remain the same at Rs. 0.80 per kilometer.

  • Looks like the fuel economy has marginally (~ 3% to 5%) improved with the BS6 engine due to Euro VI tech.

No way I support the way they tried to rush the customers. However I am positively sure that couple of months down the line top end variant of Innova will be definitely 3 lakh rupees pricier than what it was say two months back (on road). We all know that Toyota mastered the art of silently increasing the prices without anyone even noticing/bothering.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

Is this a Kia Carnival effect?

If the 2.8L engine in the Innova is withdrawn for now, the price difference between the A/T Carnival and the A/T Innova shall certainly widen, and make things a little easier for the Innova to fight the Kia.

The Kia comes with a 2.2L engine, and many buyers would not probably mind looking at a 2.4L Toyota Diesel as long as it comes with an A/T.

The 2.8L will probably come first in the Fortuner, and might be offered in the Innova at a later stage.

EDIT: Saw Warwithwheels's post, so the 2.8L is discontinued for now, indeed.

People like yours truly are left with 2.8L Crystas which will hopefully achieve classic status soon.

re: Innova Crysta BS6 Diesel to come only with 2.4L engine

Is this a move to differentiate between the Innova and it's pricier cousin, the Fortuner? Since both of them used to share the same engine (but Innova came lot cheaper), people could cross-shop between them unless one is clear to buy the SUV. Recently the sales of Fortuner have seen some decline too.

Seems lower end variants have less price hike than higher end variants. If the change is only to make the engine BSVI, why the price hike is not same across variants?
