Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I think we should have two more charts. One, which would show the average discounts offered. Other, showing the number of vehicles manufactured/dispatched by the factory, in that month. This would make us better understand the reason behind the numbers. Especially the ones which show a steep rise/fall during year end.

I suspect, Kia has been playing it smart with the manufacturing numbers in December. Also the strategies and methods used by the sales did not look very ethical. Experienced this first hand when a close friend just took delivery of his Seltos.

Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tiguan made quite a jump in sales to come upto number 2. It's been steadily increasing in numbers over the past 3 months, while Fortuner and Endeavour have declined considerably.

The Kodiaq has been selling steadily over the past three months.
Probably people are realising the value of a well-engineered German 5-seater compared to a Japanese and/or American 7-seater.

VAG might have priced the vehicle at a premium, but for the demography they are targeting, they have got 2 good products priced sufficiently well:
1. Tiguan
2. Kodiaq

Speaking from personal experience, it is mainly due to massive discounts offered by VW on diminishing inventory.

Just wait and see the numbers for Jan/Feb.

Plus, the proportion of C2 sedans sold has now dropped to about 3.5% of the total market size - the lowest it has ever been. In terms of absolute numbers, since 2011 (the first full year I have data) the industry has managed to always shift about 1.5 lakh or more C2 sedans a year. In 2019, they shifted barely over one lakh units. Next year's numbers will be interesting - I think the C2 sedan will become super exclusive simply because so few are sold!
I was a proud owner of a C2 sedan - Linea for 9 years. I was extremely happy with the car. But when it came to replacing that car in 2019. I wanted to buy either a C2 sedan or a D1 sedan. My family was totally against it. They convinced me to go for a C-SUV - Creta. Most of our relatives are changing their sedans to SUVs.

Some of the Reasons C2 sedan buyers are moving to C-SUV:
  1. The sheer length of sedans makes it more difficult to find parking spots in City
  2. The bigger boot is not that important these days
  3. Ground clearance is greater in C-SUVs, with shorter overhangs - can drive on bad roads (if not the off-road terrains) without worries of scraping.
  4. Personality upgrade. People who drive SUVs are considered "Sporty" or "Outgoing"
  5. Most buyers prefer bigger wheels, high-seating position, practicality, getting in and out of the car without bending
  6. Sedan's better cornering ability (compared to SUVs) is not something that people can enjoy in day to day life

All these reasons make one feel any SUV is an upgrade from Sedan. It is a perception war that sedans are losing every year. Not just in India, it is a worldwide phenomenon. First station-wagons lost its cool, next mini-vans lost its cool. Now, sedans and MUVs are losing their coolness. It is simply an evolution of consumer tastes.

Thanks to the 50% road tax reduction for Oct, Nov & Dec, sales in Goa shot up by 81%.

Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

On what basis are the segments decided? Is it size / dimensions or cost?

If it's cost, I find the segmentation odd and confusing.

The c2 segment has a Breeza with it's too variant priced at 10l and a Creta or Seltos with the top variant coming in at 17l. So that's spread of 7l.

The D2 has the Harrier and Hector in it, the difference in the top variant pricing between a Seltos and a Hector is in the 10's of thousands. The Harrier is slightly lower infact.

This leaves dimensions or engine output.

Can someone please explain? Am curious about the whole thing.

Although car segmentation is not that straightforward, it is indeed based on dimensions or engine capacity.

Pls go through the thread for better understanding https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...mentation.html (Car Segmentation)

Also https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...on-system.html (SIAM's new vehicle classification system)

Hope this clarifies.

Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I’m quite surprised to see the following happening;

1) Harrier sales up! Discounts helping?

2) Seltos falls steep. What happened here? Creta overtook.

3) Tigor going up. Surely it’s the discounts helping Tata.

4) Brezza back in the game overtaking Venue. People still loving the national Diesel engine of India? Knowing the fact MSIL bringing in a petrol engine shortly. Discounts helping Maruti alongside its strong service network?

5) Polo for VW is a boon whilst all other cars in their stable are absolutely stable with its mediocre performance. Polo is one car that’s catchy to the eyes even after 8+ years of its launch here in India. GT series are my favorite too.

6) Heard somewhere Rapid beating City and Verna with its sales. Skoda seems to be upping the game with their customer service? Or is it the year end discounts?

Well, most of the cars have come up the rank for sure. It is mostly the year end discounts for which most of the customers were waiting & jumped right in for purchase.

Other factor that could’ve influenced the buyers;

1) BS 6 price hike factor. Hence, settling down for BS4 variants

2) Trade in old bunch for BS4 models and lessen the effects of depreciation post implementation of BS6

It’s always difficult to judge the buying decision of a customer

Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Can't help wondering about two things
1. If certain cars are doing well post discounts, that probably means that the market perceives these cars as worthy assets. Case being the Skoda Rapid or the Nissan Kicks. Something that the manufacturer needs to note.
2. If cars were priced sensibly and translate to better economy, shouldn't the govt. also look at taxation on these cars (registration etc)? Could help boost the economy.

The discounts Skoda is offering is the reason for these numbers. After the discounts, this seems to be VFM as compared to the City and Verna. Infact, we got our Rapid at a price which is almost the same as the Ciaz. Will be putting up this in an initial ownership review though.

The reason is very simple. Rapid was offered with heavy discounts due to the stock clearance initiative, in order to make way for the BS6 Rapid expected in the next couple of months. No other reason.

On a related note, the BS6 petrol engine should be a nice one, with 115BHP and 200Nm of torque. The same one would be deployed in the Vento/ Polo GT as well. That should be an engine to look out for.

Re: December 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

My most awaitied thread is live again. Thanks Mods for the well compiled report. Few obserbvations:-

1. Baleno Beats Alto to be the top selling car in the month.
2. Otherwise slow sellers Harrier, Kicks and XUV 500 have gained the sales. Is it due to the year end discounting?
3. Top losers are Seltos, Endeavour and surprisingly S Cross. Fortuner is in the list since Toyota is not despatching from the factory. Has the initial Euphoria for the Seltos died resulting in decline in sales.

Looks like the industry is in a limbo. BS6 norms means an impending fire sale from Jan 2020.

Isn't it natural in a country where bigger is considered healthier, drains are choked, and roads are not in good heath? (All puns intended. ) I'd hate to see sedans go away. My dad doesn't feel as comfortable driving a Ciaz after being used to Qualis and Innova for 18 years.

Most probable reason is the hefty December discounts on various VW cars (link).

On another note, another piece of interesting observation that came out from the December sales:-
Baleno sales almost 17000 more as compared to Glanza.
And Rapid sales were almost 3x times that of Vento.

Both categories of cars, as we know, are mechanical twins. However look at the impact Maruti and Skoda have been able to make vs. their competition for their respective car models.
