The E class LWB was a masterstroke from Mercedes which completely killed the market for others.

With the A class sedan expected this year and maybe even the GLB, Merc will have the lower segment covered as well. My cousin in USA upgraded her 14 year old BMW E46 328i with the new A class. She didn't like any of the new BMW interiors and none were compact. The A class interior blew her away and she said for a change I didn't even have to call and ask you about the car.

Meanwhile, poor old Audi sells a shockingly low 4,600 cars - related thread (Whatever happened to Audi India? Why is the brand struggling since 2016?). If Jaguar-Land Rover were to up their lame game and become aggressive, they could easily overtake the direction-less Audi.

Quote:
It has not been a great year for Audi India and one of the biggest reasons has been the de-growth it has witnessed in sales. Audi India sold 4594 units in 2019 and registering a decline of 29 per cent in the Indian market.

I am sure you are kidding mate. Pune is one of the major, big cities in India after 4 Metro cities we have in India and I can see cars like Merc, BMW, Jaguar, Audi & others on every road, every corner of the city. Property prices here are definitely higher than most other cities in India. In my company also, we have few Merc, BMW's & other luxury cars which definitely shows Pune is upcoming metro city. Cheers!

A big factor for the huge difference is good roads and highways in China where these cars can be driven with pleasure. We on the other hand are stuck with crater riddled roads and highways from the stone ages due to massive corruption in the system. Its really a shame that even in 2020 the government can't even get basic infrastructure right.

According to Reuters, over 500 Mercedes-Maybachs are being sold in China EVERY MONTH! That’s already 6000 units per year!

(Link: https://www.google.ae/amp/s/mobile.r.../idUSKCN1BN2M8 )

The thing is, chinese cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing are rich enough to be compared with cities like NY, Tokyo and Dubai. It’s about time we Indians accept the fact that the Chinese (even those not in the 1%) have way more disposable income that us, that’s why the difference between the Chinese and Indian markets is almost as much as the difference between the Indian and Pakistani markets.

Also for reference, Mercedes sold 318,353 units in Germany - a market about size of India and 693,443 units in China. Given how much smaller Germany is compared to China, it really shows how important their home market still is for Mercedes.

Judging by future product policy, it will get even more dire for Audi with its no diesel policy.

Mercedes and BMW will continue with diesel SUVs and mop up the market. Audi's dont even have plug -in hybrid or even plain hybrid SUV's at the moment.

Looks like entire VAG had no strategy for the impending BS-VI deadline. Wonder why? Is Euro 6 so difficult to modify to BS-VI? Or are they the really smart cookies and they know something about BS-VI fuel + DPFs + Indian driving conditions that no other manufacturer knows ?

Only time will tell I suppose.

Re: BMW sells 9,641 cars in 2019. EDIT: Mercedes does 13,786 & Audi 4,594

I feel the reason for mercedes' high numbers is that their entire range has recently been updated. You see, the luxury segment in India ( especially at the C-class, 3 series end of the spectrum), it's all about image. You just can't have an old model. This is where Audi has lost out. The A4 just does not look like an all new model. To a layman, it's the same car that came in 2007.

What is worse is the fact that the petrol engine offered in the A4, A3 and Q3 is a lethargic 1.4 litre engine. When I had bought the C-class, quite a lot of people asked me about the engine CC. Telling your friends that your new 45 lakh rupee car has a 1400 CC engine, you are sure to get comments like " that's just 200 CC more than a swift".

This may not be much of an issue to us, but to quite a sizeable chunk of the buyers of these cars, image matters a lot. This is where mercedes wins it.
