we still have our trusty 9 year old esteem (8v,carbed, no power steering), 3 year old Fiat Palio Adventure 1.6 and our newest addition - a Baleno Lxi.
Zaphod,

I have the 1997 model where there was no snorkel, that was incorporated for the 1998 model, but it is the SWB Gurkha, the same type the German 4x4 magazine tested, the snorkel was incorporated at the request of the South African market, the Euro market gets the sonrkel less model with the air intake positioned on the firewall. Gurkha is no longer sold in India due to the high cost of the German components and the low demand.

1991 - 1993: Fiat Black colour
1993 - 1995: Fiat Grey colour
1995 - Present: Maruti 800 ('91 model)
2005 - Present: Baleno (Bharat III) (my first new car ... feels great after the drive in M800)

Do you have your Gurkha here in India or somewhere abroad ? How is it off road - in the deepest of muck ?

I wanted to buy a tempo trax (the Judo model) but i settled for practicality and bought a baleno.

are any available second hand ?

Zaphod,

My Gurkha is right here in HP, I was the 3rd person to get it in India, if you can read German, I have the copies of German 4x4 mag where it was tested against major off road vehicles and it came at top with the title of Ironhorse. With diff locks for rear and front, fully independent front, floating rear with two piece rear axle, divorced transfer case which swings, 16" wheels and super flexy tubular chassis, it is a dream off road in any kind of terrain. On road, you need the 15" 215-15 tires to make it stable after 130kmph.

Would be hard to find a Judo in good condition for sale, those who have them are still using them and would not part with it. If you need a new one, send me a PM and I will see what can be done at company level. Gurkha and Judo are still being exported to Germany and other parts of Europe, last year, Gurkha did superb in a East European rally where many big names faltered.

Nice choice in vehicles Gurkha ....

If you ever want to sell it , you know whom to contact

I was surprised why the Army didn't show interest in them .
I visited a dealer last year but all he could offer me were 4x2's ....

Not about to buy another vehicle now but I'll save up for a year and then catch up with you.
So as Tempo still exports them, it is possible to manage to get hold of a new Gurkha ?

will contact you soon as I save up 6l or so !- is that how much they cost ?

Zaphod,

Would be my pleasure to sell to an enthusiast like you, the army found it too expensive, SA Army as well as Malaysian Army bougth them though. The Bofors self propelled gun uses the OM 616 turbo mated to an auto tranny, the OM 616 turbo is the same engine used in Gurkha and Judo, the latest plans are to put the 2.7L MB CRDI which would raise the bhp and torque significantly making it the best value here.

Hey guys....

First Car was Premier Padmini, Navy Blue color. Followed by premier padmini again - off white color and white walled tires, Maruti 800 carb version, Maruti Esteem MPFI Limited Edition and Maruti 800 MPFI.

Dont intend to sell either of the 2 cars mentioned last (esteem and M800 MPFI).
