Indian auto market drops to No.5 after Germany

Automobile sales in India dropped 13% to just over 3.81 million units in April-December 2019 period. This is the first time new vehicle sales declined in the last 5 years. The Indian auto market is now the fifth largest market in the world, after Germany.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki witnessed a 19% drop while Hyundai had an 8% fall in numbers in the same period. Except for French carmaker Renault, all other carmakers posted a de-growth.

New entrants Kia and MG Motor too couldn't keep the overall annual figures from the red.

Re: Indian auto market drops to No.5 after Germany

Worst is yet to come with the prohibitive cost escalation after the BS6 norms kick in April 2020. Those who made their purchases Dec 2019 were the luckiest to have had huge discounts and have saved a hefty sum visavis the BS6 car cost. Post April 2020 I foresee that market going into a tailspin and hit bottom before it bounces back, unless Govt gives tax sops the future looks gloomy for the auto market.

Despite all the gloom in many segments , it appears that MPV makers are having the last laugh at beating the trends. This news from today illustrates the fact. The MPV's are coming packed with features, the bells and whistles and are luring sedan and hatch buyers. For instance, it says that the Ertiga commands nearly 50 % of the MPV market.

As a hugely patriotic personality, I'm sad about losing position no.4 to Germany. At least in the near future, I don't expect sales to climb up significantly. BS6 is just around the corner and it's going to increase prices for many cars.

Nevertheless, we still do about 30 lakh cars a year and that is a BIG deal .

This is the scary part. Kia did brilliant and we do have some good cars lined up but it would tough for anyone to replicate this success. Seltos numbers too will eventually average out.
