Maruti lines up SX4 to take on City

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2007 03:30:00 AM]

NEW DELHI: A new model, new platforms and a new engine strategy for the future. Car market leader Maruti is readying for some top-gear action with the May launch of its new mid-size car SX4.
The new car, which debuted globally at the Geneva motor show, will replace Baleno which was phased out a couple of months ago but will be likely positioned higher in the mid-size market to take on market leader Honda City which also does not have a diesel variant.

Ok, finally the reports are out. The car is finally coming in may, probably the first week itself. With Mr. Khatter's comments, I feel that the car may be fitted with the Suzuki M16A engine, generating about a 100-odd bhp.
Another thing to look at is that the engines are still being imported from Japan, which means limited supply, that translates into longer delays if you want to buy the car. Be ready for long waits, similar to the Swift-Diesel.
Waiting Eagerly now

“We have no plan at present to bring the diesel version of SX4,” Khattar said.
Sadly, Maruti is not planning to get the diesel version of SX4. I thought with the success of Swift Diesel, Maruti would be pretty upbeat of powering its SX4 range with atleast one diesel variant.

I think .. there might be option little later this year or early next year. He may not want to disclose. Many might wait for SX4 Di, if it was announced and hit sales of petrol version.

Bigger problem than the sales for MUL is actually producing the damn Engine! Look at what the state is with regards to the supply of Swift Diesels, they haven't even been able to start production of ABS-equipped cars.

If they get the Baleno also soon then the situation might hark back to the License-raj days where you got delivery of the car in 2 years time & that also whatever colour the dealer wanted to give you

SWEET - I hope it does come down for 107. I think I read 102 in yesterday's ET. Anyway, 102 is fine as well. But, 107 would be better

Maruti SX4 to come powered with Euro IV and Euro V compliant engines

India’s leading automaker Maruti has said that their future models would come powered with advanced technology engines which would be compliant with stringent Euro IV and Euro V norms.

Their upcoming sedan model Maruti SX4 would be the first product from the company to feature these new generation of engines.

Maruti is investing massively in developing these new engines and these investments are part of the parent company Suzuki’s strategy of complying with stricter emission norms.

Suzuki is already developing the Euro IV and Euro V complaint engines for the European markets and these would now be powering cars in India as well.

Maruti SX4 would come powered with the Suzuki’s M-series engine. These engines are currently being imported from Japan and fitted with a few components at Suzuki Powertrain India’s facility at Manesar near Gurgaon. Maruti aims to increase the localization levels of these engines to cut costs.

Maruti’s SX4 would come powered with the 1.6 liter petrol engine and the car is likely to be priced around Rs. 7 lakhs. It would take on rival products including the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta.

"Maruti SX4 to come powered with Euro IV and Euro V compliant engines"

The title seems a bit misleading. Is SX4 going to come with a Euro IV compliant engine? I thought Euro IV and newer engines required a higher quality of petrol than the Euro III standard fuel that is sold in the metros in India. Either way, these engines would probably be more sensitive to fuel quality.

It really looks like Maruti is in 5th gear. All the new tech and new models being launched here. They have completely moved out from their initial 'all new esteem' mode. There is no doubt the pricing will be perfect. They are entering into a segment which they have never tasted success. And they are getting the best car to do it. I am really hoping it does well so that they get more models (SUVs please).

This goes to show what an opportunity Renault lost.
It will also be interesting to see how the new Indigo variant will compete with the sx4.

At the risk of going off-topic, the new Indigo (or whatever its called) might be even more Euro-oriented and bigger in size too.
But they are surely trying to build up the excitement with those "male accessory" ads. They have to understand most Indian males need big diesely cars..

This delay in launch is testing our patience and at the same time pumping loads of excitement into us making us all more eager to see the SX4 hit the roads. Come on Maruti, please dont keep us waiting for long !
