Toyota Fortuner BS6 launch next week – Diesel, petrol engine lineup leak

Toyota Fortuner BS6 launch next week – Diesel, petrol engine lineup leak-toyotafortunerbs6engineoptions.jpg
Quote:
It was reported earlier that, just like the Innova Crysta BS6, the udpated Fortuner will ditch the 2.8-liter diesel engine and will resort to the 2.4-liter unit borrowed from the MPV. However, the latest document puts the uncertainty to rest and confirms that the existing 2.8-liter oil burner will indeed continue to power the off-roader.

A total of 7 diesel and 2 petrol variants will be on offer. In its BS4 avatar, the 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine develops 177 hp and 420 Nm of torque when mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 6-speed AT (with paddle shifters) variant benefits from an additional torque output of 30 Nm. We expect the figures to remain largely unchanged by the changes necessary for BS6 compliance. The diesel Fortuner will continue to be available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Re: Toyota Fortuner BS6 launch next week – Diesel, petrol engine lineup leak

It is a relief to see the 2.8 L continue to be available in the country in the BS6 guise. This means there still remains a possibility that special editions of the Innova may get the same engine in the future. Logical move by Toyota to put more distance between the Innova and Fortuner on power and torque output. The low fuel efficiency of the 2.8 AT combination will be less noticed in the Fortuner given the user expectations of fuel economy are also lower for the big SUV.

Now the only thing the Fortuner needs is a longer wheelbase. It looks elegant otherwise, but is spoiled by a clownish toy truck look due to a big, long car running in such a short wheelbase, with long overhangs on both ends. It is so noticeable since the truck is so high off the ground due to the high GC. I am sure the car is safe enough but a longer wheelbase would also reduce roll-over risk. If only wishes were horses, this change is too fundamental to be made mid cycle- Toyota should have addressed this during the design of the second Gen fortuner, they chose to carry on the same wheelbase (and probably many of the underpinnings) from the old first gen Innova.

Apologies for going off-topic here:

Extending the wheelbase would be detrimental to the already low ramp-breakover angle of the vehicle, leading it to beach while clearing ramps. Please note that we are talking about an SUV here and not an MPV/people mover, where longer wheelbase is desired. I completely agree though, on long front and rear overhangs leading to reduced approach and departure angles, but then that is the case with most SUVs these days!

I always knew the Fortuner will retain the 2.8L . There was no way Toyota would handicap this car with the smaller engine. The company put a BS6 premium of about 1.1 lakhs on the Innova & we can expect the same with the Fortuner.

No man. It's got enough space in the cabin. There is no need to make it longer.

I am learning for the first time that the Fortuner has a lesser ramp breakover angle. For a car that is generally accepted as a highly capable offroader, this is a surprise.

Re: Toyota Fortuner BS6 launch next week – Diesel, petrol engine lineup leak

With all the DPF issues as listed on various forums, is the technology being offered to us different?

I have been reading some solutions such as driving a higher speed in lower gear for continuous long distances etc.
This mean that these diesel suvs will not longer be useful for daily driven city usage?
Some have even removed the DPF with companies offering ecu tune ups for the same.

Are small engines like the 1.5 diesels also using similar DPF technology? How will they deal with the DPF choking issues?

Got a call from the dealer - if I can pay full amount in 3-4 days, I can get BS6 vehicle at BS4 rate.

I think Toyota is testing waters. I'm going to cancel my booking for the lack of Apple Carplay anyways.

Yes, even here my SA has confirmed the same prices. Can be due to multiple reasons, very low dispatches from the factory in December due to Euro-4/ Year-end must have resulted in a lot of inventory at the plant. With Innova under pressure due to Kia on top variants (Toyota earns maximum on Z ) and Fortuner facing stiff competition from Endeavour, if they increase the prices, it will add more to their problems. In my own circle, a couple of people who would have picked a Fortuner 5 Years back are comparing from as low as Seltos to Jeep to X1 and Kodiaq. There are simply so many choices these days.

After lot of discussions and deliberations, booked Fortuner BS6 AT 4x2.

Visited KIA Showroom multiple times, but somehow carnival does feel too big for a family , esp in Bangalore traffic.

Most probably there won't be feature changes. New features will come in Diwali upgrade. I think Tata Motors is testing waters regarding pricing.

And this means I will have to wait till Diwali for Apple CarPlay.
