The Magnite's silhouette looks good. If the product is competent and offers a solid value proposition, it could indeed sell well.

They have showcased 12 cars in this line up and they mention 12 names at the end : Aria / Armada / Frontier / Kicks / Navara / Note / Pathfinder / Qashqai / Rouge / Terra / Xtrail / Z

Interestingly Xtrail isn't shown in individual (alphabetical) listing and if it is supposedly Magnite, then its name doesn't come out in the end! Maybe being their SUV / Truck range, their other cars are not mentioned such as Micra or Leaf.

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

A closer view of the CUV?

Quote:
the Magnite was originally developed as a Datsun SUV but will be sold as a Nissan
- To come with two petrol engine options but no diesel
- The SUV will sport a hexagonal grille, as on recent Datsun models.

Quote:
Base and lower-spec versions of the SUV will be powered by a 72hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine offered with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT in some variants.
Higher variants will get the necessary oomph courtesy a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that will produce around 95hp. This engine will be available with either a 5-speed manual or CVT automatic gearbox
Quote:
price of Rs 5.25 lakh (ex-showroom) for the entry-level version. There are talks that even the 1.0 turbo-petrol engine with a CVT could have a sub-Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag.

I think Nissan is sort of hoping to do a 5 seater version of the Triber here! They would never be able to compete with the Venue, Brezza, Ecosport, Nexon and the upcoming Kia Sonet. Hence the best bet is to price the Magnite one segment lower, almost as an alternative to a Baleno or an i20. That is the only way people would even take notice and even try and walk in to a Nissan showroom, else there are too many good cars out there in the under 4m SUV segment.

And I think this should be possible, right? The Triber, the Magnite, they all come from the same family. So if the Triber itself starts as low as 6-7 lakhs on road, then the a slightly better equipped Magnite to sort of compensate for having 2 seats less, can be at the same price band.

The turbo CVT version being so closely priced to the base NA variant is simply not plausible.

If you look at the recent launch of the Kicks, with similar variant spread, you can get an idea of the price differentiation
  • Base NA Engine with Manual gearbox - Price X
  • Mid NA Engine wiuth Manual gearbox - 1.05X (mainly due to 9.99 lakh price constraint)
  • Mid Turbo Engine with Manual gearbox - 1.25 X
  • Mid Turbo Engine with CVT gearbox - 1.42 X
  • High Turbo Engine with CVT gearbox - 1.49 X

So the Turbo engine with CVT gearbox is about 45-50% more expensive than the NA Manual version. So if the base model launches at 5.25 lakhs, I would expect the Turbo CVT to come in at around 7.5-7.75 lakhs ex-showroom, going by a similar pricing spread as above. There could be a mid variant turbo CVT offered at 6.99 lakhs - that would make a good compromise between price and essential features.

re: The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV

Yes they are from the same family but design cues from Datsun doesn't impress me on a Nissan car. Hope that the final version proves me wrong.

I think it'll retain the Datsun style. Magnite was initially meant to be launched under the Datsun brand, but they decided to launch it under Nissan later. They might not had the time/wanted to put in the effort to make the style match the Nissan brand.
