Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Source: Fuel Cell Today - Indian car-makers consider fuel cell technology
The biggest names in India's automotive industry have joined in partnership in an effort to develop a viable sustainable fuel source.
Firms including Eicher Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto and Tata Motors have formed the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
They hope to find the right mix of CNG (compressed natural gas) and hydrogen to run vehicles on fuel mix, while it is thought that fuel cell technology will be used for distributed-generation.
SIAM has revealed that the group's participation in the project is the "first of its kind".
The CNG-hydrogen mixture SIAM's researchers are looking to develop is known as Hithane, which is seen as advantageous as it requires a minimal number of modifications to be made to the involved parties' existing range of cars.
Hithane also emits reduced levels of nitrous oxide (NOX). |
