Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

I am curious to see what the ultimate on road price difference would be between the top of line Astor ICE and top of line Astor EV. I would expect about 4 - 5 lakh on road but lets see where they end up slotting against each other.

Also, if the price difference is high enough, does it in effect end up cannibalizing the sales of the EV at all. After all if the price difference for a low running user doesn't justify the EV savings, he might be inclined to pick the ICE Astor as the choice capable of meeting city as well as long distance touring needs.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Interesting to see a vehicle launched as an EV turning into a petrol model than the other-way round. But can say that a diesel is sorely missed in this segment.
Since the ZS EV had five star rating in safety this will also have the same, joining s-cross in this segment to have a 5 star rating.
This vehicle having substantial road presence than the Kushaq and Taigun helps the cause too.

Bluetooth is such a horrible, unreliable and janky technology even after 3 decades. Forget streaming music, but something as crucial as car keys?! Never.

No crash test on either of these cars has been carried out yet on a car type-approved for India. There is a good chance it may score 5 stars, but let's hold our horses until a test result under Global NCAP's SaferCarsForIndia program. We never know what manufacturers have in store for us sometimes.

I must commend the standard fitment of ESC and a three-point safety belt and neck restraint for the fifth occupant though. It remains to be seen how many airbags are standard.

That's only a backup solution. There is a physical key as well -

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

The Astor looks like a promising package. In terms of dimensions, it’s slightly longer and wider than the Creta, but has a lower height and lower wheel base. Considering MG’s pricing strategy with the Hector and also taking in to account of the XUV700’s disruptive pricing, I see the Astor to be priced quite competitively maybe just at par or slightly lower than the Creta, so as to grab eyeballs at the launch. Also, I have seen the ZS EV around and although it looks good, it doesn’t have the street presence of the Creta, Seltos. But for sure it should be a great alternative to the Koreans.

Unfortunately there just seems to be no real threat to these Koreans except the XUV700. The Kushaq hasn’t got off to a great start and I don’t expect anything better from the Taigun either. Cannot understand as to why on earth would VW create a car that is dimensionally smaller than the segment leaders and yet price it at a premium? And now we have a decent attempt from MG, but they are handicapped in terms of reach and plus the car looks more on the lines of the S-Cross.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Astor has a turning radius of 5.6m as compared to Creta's 5.3 m.
It may be an issue with tight parking spaces in an Apartment complex.

We did test drives of MG ZS EV, Creta, and Kushaq. ZS EV and Astor have almost similar dimensions and turning radius.
Kushaq is the easiest to maneuver, followed by Creta in tight parking spaces. MG ZS EV also eventually made it to my parking space.

My humble suggestion is to take a test drive if there are any concerns about tight parking spaces.

The bonnet sits a bit low in my opinion, may be subjective. A slightly higher bonnet would have given the car a more butch look.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Any idea about the suspension setup of this. I am planning to book this once bookings open. My current ride is Vento 1.6 TDI. I was interested in Kushaq but after test drive I felt it as a downgrade from my current ride.

My priority is driving dynamics and suspension and hence duster/kicks were the primary choice, but there is no clarity regarding the arrival of updated models. I don't want to go with the outdated models as I am planning to keep the car for next 10 years.

Please suggest

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

From the pictures there are a few things that seems to be missing out.
1. Seat belts doesn’t look height adjustable
2. I don’t see any buttons for climate control. Looks more like a manual ac with controls on the ICE display.
3. No paddle shifters
Also, any idea what is the rotating knob on the roof panel for?

If you were disappointed with Kushaq handling then Astor won’t shine in this department either. Atleast this based on the international reviews.

All reviews pegged Volkswagen twins as the best in handling department in the segment. I highly doubt MG will surpass it.

MG vehicles isn’t known for crisp handling. Jack of all master of none, that is how i would look at it.

If 1.3 turbo petrol doesn’t give decent mileage, then again 1.5 TSI with cylinder deactivation holds the trump card here along with ride and handling.
