Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Here we go again!!
  1. First step reveal the car, call all the media and just show it
  2. Second Step in maybe few weeks disclose the variants!
  3. After maybe a month or two give out the pricing and start bookings.
  4. Start delivering car in maybe 3-4 months from original unveil date.

Kind of becoming a trend now for all manufacturers, but some other manufacturer can also spoil the party by the time you actually delivering cars.

Always risk of canceling bookings as we will have some or the other car launching nearby now that market is getting better.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Just a question about buying a non Maruti or Hyundai car. Should we be worried long term now with the news about Ford exiting? It appears that VW / Skoda could be next but then how long would it take for MG to make a decision like Ford did if things don't work out? Ford was possibly doing more numbers than MG because of the Ecosport. We could expect MG to jump up the sales game with the Astor. However, there are things like the anti China sentiment, vocal for local, a low number of service centers to name a few.

MG is doing some good numbers despite having any real volume sellers in their portfolio.

Their future remains to be seen, but Astor is likely to be joined by a new platform which consists of a hatchback, sub-4m SUV and an MPV in a couple of years.

Spoke to MG dealer, 1.3 turbo engine will be available both with and without ADAS features. Torque converter will be available with this engine.

The difference here is that MG is selling cars and trying to cater to fastest growing segment of PV, SUV. I feel following key differences will help MG survive and thrive much better than Ford:
1) SUV focus start with Hector
2} Competitive/disruptive pricing when Hector was launched. You had a choice to buy a segment above car at price of Korean siblings
3) Astor will bring in real volumes for MG. Again expecting competitive pricing and better after sale long term warranties (as offered in Aus)
4) Entry into EV segment with ZS. Something that even Maruti isn't prepared to enter. (Should be first point on this list)

I feel Ford stopped investing in India some time back and was running with aged cars. Added to this their JV with Mahindra couldn't click & they didn't wish to invest in 2.0 like VAG group.

India has a lot of potential, since per capita income will increase and population is large enough to replicate whole Europe volume for a co. in single country.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

I'm in the market for C-SUV, MG's earlier offerings was too much for me and didn't follow them at all. But the Astor seems to be pretty compact and around my budget as well. But I'm worried about Chinese manufacturing.

I fell in love with Volvo's and found V40 Cross Country to be affordable as well as practical for Indian roads but when manufacturing was moved to China I had to let go of it.

I read in one of the TeamBHP ownership thread of recent Volvo XC40 about how car is getting shipped from China. Is that the same with MG as well - everything gets shipped from China - how is the ride quality and service and over all feedback ?

When are the Japs entering the C-SUV space come on Honda & Toyota - wake up please !

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

Having owned a Hector Plus for about 6 months now I’d say I’m relatively familiar with the company and I’m so far very happy with the ASS. They’ve been extemely proactive with reminders and updates. Perhaps more importantly, after the service they have follow-up calls from some sort of QC/customer care team to check on whether things have been taken care of and that you’re satisfied. Of course, I can’t gush enough about the stunningly well-priced service costs. It’s actually cheaper than our Alto! Cost of engine oil change came to just 2,500 INR - I had to double check that they hadn’t made a mistake!

Going by how agile and responsive they’ve been to market sentiment and feedback (switch to 18 inch wheels, addition of a CVT version to counter concerns about the DCT - unheard of from any brand in India imo, introduction of ventilated seats, less jazzy looks on the Plus, launch of a smaller crossover so soon) I’m confident they are in for the long haul and that they want to win over customers with real value rather than pure media/influencer blitzing.

Fwiw, when we were taking delivery of the Hector Plus, we had a good long look at the ZS EV and my entire family was absolutely delighted with the design and styling. Personally I’d have taken it over any existing crossover in its category at the time for its design, the Kushaq running it close now with a different, quintessentially-German squarish/straight-lined approach. Both my dad and I remarked that if it came with an IC engine, we’d be all over it like white on rice. I’m confident they’ll make smart choices with the engine they pair it with and, given Skoda’s utterly shambolic rollout of the Kushaq, I’m sure there will be takers. Going by my experience with the Hector Plus thus far, all things being equal right now I’d pick it over the Kushaq just for peace of mind. And if it has ADAS (which they need to given the XUV’s amazing specs) at an attractive pricing (which MG will almost certainly deliver), it’ll be compelling.

Let’s see what they bring to the market.

On a separate note, I’m glad they’ve been pretty straight with the bulletins instead of endless months of pointless idiotic teasers that seem to be in vogue. I find that so annoying.

This is going to be a really interesting vehicle. The Creta and Seltos really have no rivals at their price points, and this will be the first true rival. Maruti and Honda will be entering this space but that will take at east 2-3 years.

Re: MG considering petrol ZS for India. Edit: MG Astor unveiled

I was on the lookout for a car within the 12-18L range and went checking the ZS EV earlier in the hope that Astor would be similar in look and feel. Recently interacted with a dealership in Delhi on its launch, availability and features.

please find below key pointers:

- There would be 5 variants
- pre-booking has already started by paying 50k
- features which have been highlighted already in the forum are going to be there - ADAS, AI, adaptive cruise control, headlamp control etc..
- 1.3 ltr/1.5 ltr to be provided
- AT options across the engines
- Manual only in 1.5 (110ps)
- 6 speed AT TC in 1.3 ltr (140ps)
- CVT in 1.5 ltr (8 speed?)
- 1.5 ltr similar to Hector but to the lower tune
- price range not yet known - probably between 15-20L as per him; although has heard of 13L starting, going till 18L - although per him it could be higher?
- availability of cars by Oct-end
- Style, Super, Smart, Sharp, Savvy - 5 variants
- White, red, orange, black, silver - colours to be offered
- 6 airbags to be offered and 17 inch alloys - in top model
- Sharp is everything same as top model except ADAS and related features

My 1st post on this forum - hope this helps fellow members. Awaiting the launch and pricing.

Considering decent spread of 5 variants, I would have expected entry model ex-showroom price to be more aggressive nearer to 10L, rather than 13L.

Maybe MG is not going with barebones entry level model, and doing decently equipped base version, ala Honda City, to build a premium image. If so, the Korean twins will have price advantage in base level variants.

Thanks and Welcome!
Most of your points are correct and have been discussed on this forum.
However, I'd disagree on the pricing information.
My good guess is the range will be 9.95L-15.95L ex-showroom pricing. The reasons -
1) Many reputed Auto Journalists have already predicated 9-16L range.
2) Bigger Hector sells for 13.5-18.5L ex-showroom. You cannot price it as high as Hector.
3) History of MG undercutting the competition in pricing, even after providing more features. Hector was priced competitively against Harrier/Compass, Gloster was priced competitively against Fortuner/Endeavour.

I think, they might follow Mahindra on providing top features including ADAS as optional pack, which will take fully loaded Astor to be around 17L ex-showroom.
Let's wait till 15th September for the official event. No doubt, Astor is an exciting launch alongside XUV700 in C-SUVs.

Had a talk with the local MG dealer in Kolkata. He says the top model will be around 16 lakhs on road. Bookings have started by paying 20k deposit!

The Korean twins cost 19-20 Lakhs OTR for top end variants. If Astor is going to be priced at 16L Ex-Showroom (~17L OTR) for top variant then MG will be selling them like hot cakes.

Hi guys, any possibility of getting panaromic sunroof like in Hector? Unavailability of Diesel is a bummer for me personally.
