The Skoda Rapid 1.0L TSI Petrol, now launched at Rs 7.49 lakhs

Mod Note: Our Skoda Rapid TSI Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Big shoutout to Vid6639 for shooting these pictures & his coverage of the Auto Expo. Thanks for sharing, man!

Skoda unveiled the Rapid BS6 at the Auto Expo 2020. The Rapid BS6 will only be available only with a 1.0L, 3-cylinder, TSI turbocharged petrol engine. There will no longer be a diesel option. The 1.0L TSI is expected to produce 113 BHP & 200 Nm.

The engine will be mated to a new 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Skoda will be dropping the DSG from the Rapid (Volkswagen is expected to do the same with the Vento / Polo). This has been done to keep costs under check and cater to a wider segment. The DSG was not known for its reliability, which could be a reason as well.

The Vision IN compact SUV is also expected to get this engine and gearbox combination.

Rapid Matte Concept features a matte finish exterior with glossy red and black highlights. The matte paint job is not a wrap but a factory paint job. Skoda wants to gauge the response to the paint scheme to see if they can bring it to production. It is of very high quality and looks fantastic. However this paint scheme also needs service centres to have the capability to do the paint repair which is not easy.

When we were expecting the international version of the all new rapid, we get the existing model with a new heart.

No BS6 diesel on offer is a bummer too. In my opinion, existing stocks(if any remaining) are going under great discounts. I would rather buy the 1.5 TDI at a 2 lakh discount rather than buying the same car with a thirsty turbo petrol without any discounts.

This is only a stop gap arrangement till the new RAPID / VENTO ( Virtus)built on the MQB A0 IN platform comes sometime in late 2021/ early 2022. Either ways diesel is not expected in this segment from the VAG group.

Will this engine also power Polo GT from April 2020? Or are they discontinuing Polo GT until they move it to MQB A0 platform?

I hope Skoda is not discontinuing the Style variant on the 1.0L model, because the car in the pics is missing auto headlamps and auto dimming IRVM, but these are present in the Monte Carlo edition.

re: The Skoda Rapid 1.0L TSI Petrol, now launched at Rs 7.49 lakhs

Reliability may be an issue, but the DSG did make an impression in India. And, their TDI mill too.

In fact, how many Rapids can Skoda sell, with just a 3-cyl 1.0L TSI engine?

Another point of change, is Skoda going to fix 17 inch alloys in Monte Carlo and Matte, or is it only for the Expo purpose?

Actually I think this might just work. If the engine is really not that bad to drive, it will replace the diesel and the MPI well. Plus they need to price it well. Below their older Rapids.

Coupled with 6 speed TC automatic it might just do the trick in picking up some sales. The Rapid and Vento are insanely old in the market and theys still sell when Hyundai and Honda have been through 2 generations.

With BS6 there really is no point in having a diesel in lower spectrum. Good for large SUV's and pointless for Rapid type cars.

The 17inch wheels was expo special. Every car at the Expo had big wheels for that Bling. The Kodiaq was running 19s vs 18s. The Superb was on 19s vs 17s.

Yes, in a way, it should work with the 1.0L TSI motor. May be, many people buying the premium petrol hatch can move up to a sedan. Its fuel efficiency might also help.

I have been a diesel person from the time I drive, and go an extra mile to have a diesel engine. And I have sedan of this segment. I did drive quite a few petrol engines, but people like me will certainly miss the diesel mills, if we do not move up from the segment. There is also the problem that the other brands in the segment can have diesel options. So, unless the price works for Rapid and unless its replacement is not close, the situation can be different.

Really?? I am sad. I was planning to buy Rapid in diesel avatar in next couple of years, it's in my wish list for last couple of years. Current avatar of Rapid is best looking and really worth buying one at that price.

Looks like i need to buy one in resale market next year.

re: The Skoda Rapid 1.0L TSI Petrol, now launched at Rs 7.49 lakhs

As much as it is, what is new here in this already existing clubber alloy?

And, LED DRL, trunk spoiler, and rear diffusers were already available in the style variant. Are they going to be standard acrosx variants now, or will there be only one variant?

All that talk of Skoda leading VWs charge in India with new approach and here we are looking at them putting lipstick on an old horse.

re: The Skoda Rapid 1.0L TSI Petrol, now launched at Rs 7.49 lakhs

Unsure why everyone is so upset. Skoda has already proclaimed that they are going to introduce the all new Rapid in 2021/22.

This is a known stop gap till then. The only really new thing is the 1.0 TSI, and the international reviews are pretty good about it.
