January 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

The Gypsy rises like a phoenix and registers sale. Unfortunately as reported earlier, these are only to government agencies and Army. Guess this is one of the rare models which had to be reintroduced on demand after it was discontinued. Hats off!

Also what does minus1 mean for Safari/Storme?

Not bad for Altroz. To do 50% of what the mighty i20 does is no mean feat. A competent auto box should bring in more sales. Also, this is petrol only sale right for Altroz ? Does i20 sell diesels right now or are they also waiting for BS6 compliant diesel engines ?

Dude, that had the entire office team stumped. We checked with the Autopunditz website and that's how it stands.

Skoda is doing really well in the segments they are in. Even the old Rapid is doing good numbers especially when compared to the VW original.

And 15K Seltos – that how a blockbuster is created!

Someone must have shown interest in the car in Dec 2019. An over enthusiastic sales person must have billed the car before receiving the final payment. But come new year, the buyer developed cold feet and asked to cancel. Thats how its -1.

Unlike other places where cancellations happen, a new buyer would not have been found by the dealer.

Re: January 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Cannot make much about these numbers. In fact, Jan - March 2020 numbers will not reflect correct picture, given stocking out of BS4 and introduction of BS6 models.

Only when dust around BS6 options on various cars, and their pricing settles; only then will we know where the market stands.

It may only be in May or June 2020 that we will start getting a clear picture.

Just shows, Kia took early lead in BS6 (not to forget a badass product!), and is enjoying success. And if the Carnival does 25% the number that Crysta does, Kia will be laughing away to the bank. And the Kia's Venue alternative will also rake in huge numbers, which will mostly ultimately unsettle M&M in the third place.

Sad to see Indian manufacturers gradually seceding space to new entrants. Will be so nice to see some fresh young blood, like Ather in the 2 wheeler space, in the four wheeler space too (need not be only electric).

Can we request (or highlight if we have the breakup) for EV vehicle data as a separate segment/section?

Going ahead the percentage of that is going only to increase!

Re: January 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the January Analysis:

Some more insights to the analysis,

The New Year fails to cheer the Auto Industry the woes seems carried over from last year. The industry declined in Jan by (- ) 5.3% Y-O-Y with many reporting negative to flat growth. The Industry is currently reeling to liquidate BS-4 stocks and all efforts are aligned in the direction.

The Auto Leader has managed the transition to BS6 very well with over 80% of its portfolio now being BS6 compliant.

Even though Maruti Suzuki has seen a near flat growth, it has increased its market share by 3%, now at 53% it leaves the second player Hyundai behind at 16%.
The biggest losers for the month are the Japanese duo – Honda & Toyota

Stars of the Month:

- KIA SELTOS

- Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Highlights for Jan-20

- Maruti Suzuki reaches 53% Market Share
- Venue’s numbers are tapering off and is responsible for Hyundai’s M S drop
- Mahindra loses too as Marazzo and XUV300 doesn’t bring in volumes
- Kia back at the volume game, becomes the 4th largest auto company in India
- MG’s sale hovers around 3k+ units and is good incentive for other Chinese players to step in.

Maruti Suzuki: Impressive as it shows a near flat growth even in this difficult times. One on the 3 companies showing a positive growth.
Dzire the premium Compact Sedanr becomes the best seller of Jan-20 closly followed by the Premium Hatch Baleno and then Swift. All recording positive growth. The entry level Alto falls to 3rd and records a negative growth.
Highlights: Maruti Suzuki now has almost all its cars leading in their respective segments. Would be interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki’s sales position is affected as BS6 rolls out from April 2020.

Hyundai: Hyundai falls in a negative growth at 8%, loses market share and is now at ~ 16 %.
Its new launch Aura does mediocre business as numbers include test /display cars.
Highlights: Hyundai had 2 offerings in the Top 10 (Grand i10 &i20 . Venue loses its leadership volumes and contributes to Hundai’s loss in market share.
Would be interesting to see the volumes post BS6 as Hyundai has a diesel portfolio in many cars and has an edge over competition.

Mahindra: Mahindra falls in the negative growth at 13%. Barring Scorpio all its cars are in the negative growth
Losing edge in the UVs race, M&M has something radical to do to gain traction. Bolero, Scopio , XUV 3OO bails out the company from further erosion in sales.

KIA: Seltos volumes is mind boggling at 15k+ units. Carnival, after its price announcement could be its halo product with no immediate threat to Toyota.
It is now at 5.9% Market Share in Jan-20 and is now the fourth largest Auto company in terms of sales volumes.

Re: January 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Great job done by Kia with the Seltos. Looks like it will hover around that 12-15000 mark for some time. 450 dispatches for the Carnival is not bad. I guess , one more good product and Kia will comfortably be in the 3rd position.

Strange jump for the Yaris. And steep drop for the VW cars-assume it is a ramp down in preparation for BS6.

Overall looks like next 2 months will see a good amount of churn in the run up towards BS6 norms. Will need to wait for the middle of the year to see a clear picture emerge again.
