Honda planning a new hatchback based on the City sedan

New patent images surface which gives way to the speculation that Honda is planning a hatchback for the ASEAN markets.

With the new generation JAZZ/FIT ruled out for many markets and available now only in Europe, UK and Japan. This hatchback could fill in the segment of the current Jazz in the premium hatch space.

This all-new hatchback is based on the next-gen 2020 City sedan.

Then, what about other Asian markets? Indeed there is no certainty to go there, especially the ASEAN region such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Honda Prospect Motor itself as the official APM of Honda in Indonesia is still studying whether Honda consumers in Indonesia - especially Jazz enthusiasts - are interested in the fourth-generation Honda Jazz. Polls are still being collected,

Does this draw resemblance to BMW 1-Series?

Honda is preparing an all-new hatchback based on the next-gen 2020 City sedan. A first set of patent drawings of this new hatchback have surfaced online, giving us a glimpse of what Honda’s newest hatch could look like.

For those who don’t know, Honda has been selling a City-based notchback – called the Gienia – in the Chinese market since 2016.

Honda took the wraps off the latest-gen Jazz late last year and the model is now being introduced to most markets gradually. However, the new Jazz will not be brought to the Indian market. The new City hatchback could be a potential replacement for the Jazz in some markets. However, we expect the model to be China-focused, at least initially, and act as a replacement to the Gienia.

Front portion looks sweet. Rear is a bit dated, if you ask me. But Honda does need a good car in that space ASAP.

Funny part is that the City has always been based on hatch platform. So this could very well be India specific Jazz.

Looks much better than the Jazz, IMO. Looks like a proper hatch than the min-van-like Jazz. But I doubt whether this will be a sub-4m car.

So, first make a sedan from a hatch, and then make a different hatch from that sedan. As long as designers can give a differentiating feel among these spin offs, there is absolutely no problem in this strategy.

The new i20 looks a bit like the old Jazz and the new Jazz will look like the i20.

Re: Rumour: Honda's new hatchback for ASEAN markets

Any chance of this new hatchback getting launched in the Indian market - now that the Jazz has been ruled out?

A hatch based on the new City platform could be more cost-competitive as against the Jazz which is primarily targetted at developed markets including Europe. However - going by the old-Civic-rivalling size of the new City, this one could be well over 4 metres in length! That would surely be a determining factor in whether this car would be considered for India.

From the front it looks like the current Civic. And the length looks quite long, almost wagon-ish!

Re: Rumour: Honda's new hatchback for ASEAN markets

There can only be one reason for this development. Honda is hell bent to cheapen out. Why is a product as good as Jazz ruled out for the Indian market? They are about to launch the new City, then why axe Jazz? They are basically the same car. The mediocre sales of the current Jazz are solely because of Honda’s own blunders in pricing, equipment and variant spread, refusal to offer the 1.5 iVTEC and the diesel CVT option, cheapening of quality and removal of USPs like magic seats. Their stubborn insistence on protecting the City is the root cause of their problem, at a time when the City itself faces severe competition and flagging sales.

It pains me as an owner of the brilliant first gen Jazz to see Honda ruin the brand. Stop being greedy, stop treating us like a third world country. Bring in your best products, price them competitively and yes, the market will respond. If you insist on selling cars that are like Maruti, sorry, we can buy Maruti cars directly.

Doubt it! I have a feeling both these cars have parted ways. (Fact check - Still checking for details to support this though!)

1. The current generation Fit for Europe is so drastically different compared to the new City revealed for the Asian markets, unlike the earlier cars where many things including the interior felt common between the two.

2. Even their main markets like Thailand got only the new City, no new Jazz.

3. They seem to be making a rival product for these developing markets, based on the City.

Re: Honda planning a new hatchback based on the City sedan

Just hope that it doesn't lose the older Jazz's quality of excellent space packaging and practicality which was its USP.
This looks better than the current generation from the front but my first thought on looking at the rear was that it looks like the new Mercedes GLA.
A 2020 GLA for reference

Its actually easier & simpler for Honda to bring this new model than the new Jazz. More than 70% of the tooling is already available in the form of new City and the rest is what they have to build new. Reduction in prices and investment. Helps in maximum localization too. Lets see if Honda brings this.

As owner of current Jazz it pains not to see the new gen Jazz, but, you remain a legend owning it.

Hmmm, Indians prefer SUV form factor for this segment(Creta/Seltos) and the masterminds at Honda think of this !!

Re: Rumour: Honda's new hatchback for ASEAN markets

Isn't the City is based on Jazz platform? As far as I know, the last 2 generation CITY was based on the Jazz platform, even though the 3rd gen City had different interior than corresponding 1st gen Jazz.
