No. S Tech came in Spark. The Original Matiz came with M Tec which was essentially a Suzuki F8C Engine.

The G16B powering the MS Baleno was a fantastic motor. One of the last large petrols from MS for a while (now the 1.5 is available), it has excellent driveability, both in city and the highways. It produced 95 hp, which was more than sufficient for the lightweight car, and 130nm torque, which came at merely 3000rpm! Such a low end torque, from a petrol motor, made sure this car was pocket rocket!
Unfortunately, that's not a Baleno G16B. Those had COP ignition, whereas this has a distributor. Possibly one of the imported Suzuki heads, because it doesn't look like the Indian G10/13/16s.

Re: The best engines ever sold in India

Not exactly "the best", but one underrated and largely unknown engine that I enjoyed for a few years was the petrol engined Indica Xeta. The different thing about this engine at that time, compared to its competitors (primarily the Alto at its price point, though it was punching in a costlier weight-class among the Santro and WagonR while competing with the Alto price-wise), was the fact that it developed peak-torque at around 2000rpm. This made it incredibly drivable and punchy in the city, diesel-like in fact, with none of the lag that comes with a turbo. I had so much fun with this peppiness on city streets.

This engine deserved a lot more applause than it got in those days.

Activa also has the same engine if i am not wrong, but with a longer stroke.
Second that. It was the first motorised engine/vehicle I ever owned - Hero Honda splendour first generation sold in 1995!

The engine had a nice deep throated sound unlike the scream of the Yamaha 100 (which was the main competitor). Also, the Hero Honda has the first 4 stroke engine in its class. The Kawasaki Bajaj and TVS as well as the Yamaha were 2 stroke engines.

It was the dream of many a young man in those days to own a Yamaha! A sure fire way to be popular in college. You can see this re-lived in Taj Mahal 1989 show out on Netflix recently - Dharam owns one circa 1989 and flaunts it on the Lucknow University campus.

However, the Honda sourced motor in the Splendour outdid the Yamaha in most counts - fuel efficiency, low speed pick-up, mature chassis etc.

This long list ought to be settled with a poll.

Basically everyone wants every engine sold in India to be in this thread. Time to remove the word, "best" from the thread title.

Re: The best engines ever sold in India

Wonder why no one talked about the 1.5 L Honda Earth Dream i-DTEC engines. Literally revived Honda's fortunes in India around 2012.

The only diesel that Honda had in decades! Ran both Amaze and City, mounted on manual and CVT gearboxes.

Low RPM and high fuel efficiency, no niggles. Generates high NVH on Amaze but purrs on the City! Never tires, is a beast on the highways - very assured at high speeds.

Well, i havent noticed the mention of the 1.2 Kappa engine from Hyundai, or the ones powering the likes of Chevy Beat(P) or Corsa or VW 1.6 (P) or the ones powering the KUV/TUV etc. But there appears to be some consensus in various categories; ie. Maruti K10/12 engines in the compact hatch segment, Honda iVTec in the mid-size sedan, the 1.2 TSi straddling a bit on both , also the 1.3 MJD.

It's only 6 pages long. Give some time and people will add the engines you mentioned as well.

After all, if the Indica XETA petrol engine can be mentioned then why not everything else? That car was an absolute joke.

Re: The best engines ever sold in India

Thanks guys! Great discussion. I think the initial lot of pages captured all the special engines. Thread closed.
