February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Two of the world’s largest manufacturers are reeling in Indian context – VW and Toyota. VW’s total number is even less than the single model brand – Jeep. And Toyota with all its might is just surviving with the two big horses (Fortuner and Innova)!

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Don't think we can read too much into the numbers for Feb and March, thanks to the transition from BS-IV to BS-VI. But that's a sharp fall in Dzire & Brezza numbers. Both mostly due to discontinuation of diesel. Eeco seems to be filling in the gap left by Omni. Ertiga+XL6 make up almost ~15k, that's terrific but even Ertiga would loose the diesel by April right? Unless maruti brings the 1.5 DDiS in BS-VI guise soon, the number would come down definitely.

Maruti has given the sub4m CSUV crown to Hyundai in a platter by not getting the diesel. Nexon, Ecosport & XUV3OO battle out for the 3rd spot as always.

No shipments for Jazz and WR-V? WR-V anyways is coming back in BS-VI format. But no such info about Jazz. Does that mean Jazz's 2nd inning is over as well? Hope they now equip the WR-V with CVT atleast in diesel. That itself will give it a solid USP in the segment compared to all others, especially in diesel CVT guise.

None of the TATA cars in top 20. Too early but I feel altroz desperately needs that AT , in order to stay relevant. That segment buyers specially from tier1 and 2 cities now prefer automatics.

Kia is on a roll. Already No.3 in the market with just 2 products and mind you none of them belong to A or B segment

I think they are either at the end of their wits as to how to operate in our market and are just counting on garnering some numbers via this new rebranding of Maruti products, Or, they are waiting for the electric vehicles to become more mainstream in the coming decade and possibly be the leaders there. Till then they would continue to sell whatever Innovas and Fortuners they can, till the time that other competitors do not launch a more competitive product for instance the Kia Carnival has the potential to shave off some numbers from the Innova. I feel they have all but given on the entry level segment and would not venture there any further after the debacle called "Yaris" and would rather happily sell Toyota Balenos and Bezzas.

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Hyundai Elantra - When will you learn that you can't compete with Skoda Octavia and Honda civic ? Make it a segment below Octavia and slightly above Verna, cut off a 3 lac from the pricing and try.

Vellfire - 42 dispatches! is it mostly dealer demo cars?

Hope AT Harrier results would come from March month sales - I am waiting to see how much difference can Auto transmission make.

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting to see Kia Seltos single handedly making Kia the No.3 car seller in India.
Polo numbers are plummeting, needs a special edition!
Corolla is 0 units, that's surprising, finished bs4 stock and no bs6 dispatches yet?
And in other news, safari /storme sold "-1" units in Feb, a error probably.

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

for me the standout statistic here is 1620 carnivals sold. Since this is the second month on the charts, these will not just be showroom and test drive vehicle dispatches but actual customer cars.

Indians have heartily embraced Kia just like we did with Hyundai 20 years back

How many Nexons were EV? This is a superb value proposition in its EV guise and I really hope the market accepts it with open arms!

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the Feb sales data and analysis:

Some more points to be noted:

The budget, BS4 discounts fails to bring cheer to the Auto. The industry declined in Feb by ~6.8 % Y-O-Y with many reporting negative growth. The Industry is currently reeling to liquidate BS-4 stocks and all efforts are aligned in the direction.

The Auto Leader has managed the transition to BS6 very well with over 80% of its portfolio now being BS6 compliant.

Even though Maruti Suzuki has seen a negative growth, it has ring fenced market share at 53% it leaves the second player Hyundai behind at 16%.

Kia created history by becoming the No.3 OEM in the shortest span of time. This feat was achieved within 7 months of sales operations and is a record by itself! Kia overtook the biggies like Tata, Mahindra, and Toyota & Honda to place itself in the Top 3 manufacturers list. Kia ( 6.2%) and Hyundai (16 %) together now records a healthy 22 % Market Share.

Unpreparedness in BS6 transition and COVID19 has seriously affected Mahindra’s production and the OEM registered a massive drop of -56%. The drop led M&M to slid into the No.5 OEM position and it also lost -4.8% Market Share in Feb’20 v/s Feb’19.
Tata Motors is not gaining any ground even with new launches in hand. Even post Altroz’s launch the Indian OEMs volumes dipped -31% YoY.

The biggest losers for the month are Mahindra’s and Honda (biggest market share drop)
Highlights for Jan-20
- Kia becoming the No.3 OEM in the shortest span of time.
- Maruti Suzuki gains market share of 2.4 %
- The Top 3 OEMs collectively shall command a humongous Market Share of 75.5%

Maruti Suzuki: The OEM anticipated the BS6 turmoil much well in advance and prepared its entire portfolio for transition. Even one of its bestseller Brezza went through the change and petrol only Brezza was launched in Feb’20. However; it is yet to be seen how the strategy shall turn out in long term. Basis Feb’20 performance alone; Maruti dominated the Market Share and registered over 53% MS.

Highlights: Maruti Suzuki now has almost all its cars leading in their respective segments. Would be interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki’s sales position is affected as BS6 rolls out from April 2020.

Hyundai: Hyundai too falls in a negative growth at 7%, loses market share and is now at ~ 16 %.

Its new launch Aura seems to have received a lukewarm response, need to see even if these numbers are sustained in the long run.

Highlights: Hyundai had 2 offerings in the Top 10 (Venue & Grand i10. Venue loses its leadership volumes and contributes to Hundai’s loss in market share.

Would be interesting to see the volumes post BS6 as Hyundai has upcoming new launches like Creta and i20 .

KIA: Kia created history by becoming the No.3 OEM in the shortest span of time with just 2 products in their portfolio. Market share grows to 6.2% which leaves established players like Tata’s and Mahindra’s in distant 4th and 5th in the listing.

TATA: Tata Motors is not gaining any ground even with new launches in hand. Even post Altroz’s launch the Indian OEMs volumes dipped -31% YoY.

Mahindra: Gaps in BS6 readiness, COVID19 have seriously affected Mahindra’s production and the OEM registered a massive drop of -56%. The drop led M&M to slid into the No.5 OEM position and it also lost -4.8% Market Share in Feb’20 v/s Feb’19.

Volkswagen/Skoda: Nothing great for them, but has announced their new line up of diesel free portfolio in the mass market products. With its niche offerings in the form of CBU’s, that is how they can be in the limelight till mid-2021, when their SUV heavy portfolio kicks in. Even with this Skoda is still leading in two Luxury segments – Luxury and Premium sedan segments.

Re: February 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Isn't anyone going to talk about Creta's disappearance from the list? A car which consistently hung in top 5 has gone out of top 20? Very surprising. Granted, new Creta is around the corner and the present one looks very dated (especially in the company of its own cousin Seltos) but still this figure of less than 4 k is very low. And, what's with Wagon R? This car just refuses to die. On the contrary, it scales new heights. And, this month it even trumped Baleno. So did the Swift. Beats me why. Kia is the new king in town. Look at Seltos. It just oozes style. Proportions are spot on, too. Sure, the upper variants are overpriced for what they offer but lower variants are priced ok-ish. I'm sure their next offering Sonet would take their game to next level.

Hyundai probably stopped production of the outgoing Creta hence you see lower figures which are basically the residual stock till the new model takes over.

Very surprised by the huge drop in Tata Altroz sales. Such a fantastic product and and really well priced too. Wonder what Tata needs to do to get into the top 10 league. Feel bad for them.
