re: The 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra, now unveiled

What is with Hyundai and their bigger than the car front grille. I mean just have a look at the new Santro particularly in white. The front end looks like a toad that was ran over by a truck or something. Although the silhouette looks great, I am sure the interiors are also going to be great too. But that front end is just a car design shipwreck.

Elantra Hybrid

For the first time ever, a hybrid powertrain has been added to the Elantra lineup. Elantra Hybrid demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its eco-focused lineup of products. The new Elantra Hybrid will feature a 1.6-liter GDI Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine. Elantra Hybrid’s permanent-magnet electric motor delivers 32 kW powered by a lithium-ion-polymer battery with 1.32 kWh of capacity positioned under the rear seats. The 1.6-liter GDI engine combined with the electric motor in Elantra Hybrid delivers a total system output of 139 horsepower and up to 195 lb-ft of torque. This engine mates with Hyundai’s quick-shifting, six-speed, dual-clutch transmission–differentiating Elantra Hybrid from its key competitors because of its more dynamic and engaging driving experience. The high-efficiency electric motor has an electric only driving mode that delivers instantaneous torque at low speeds, with available power-assist at higher vehicle speeds. The 2021 Elantra Hybrid is projected to have a combined EPA estimated fuel economy rating of more than 50 MPG.

Engine Performance

The Elantra SE, SEL, and Limited offer the 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine that also has a focus on fuel economy. This engine generates 147 horsepower @ 6,200 RPM and 132 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4,500 RPM. These models are projected to achieve a best-in-class EPA combined fuel economy rating, an improvement over previous models, due in part to an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).

re: The 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra, now unveiled

The side view looks very elegant. But the front does not invoke the same emotions. Looks like Hyundai is losing all the great looking lines which came with the fluidic design language and Kia is gaining all those beautiful lines. New Kia designs somehow look a lot better than the Hyundai ones. That said, there is an equal number of people who like both the kind of designs. And that could be the reason why they have two brands.

I think the new Elantra is not as bad as some of the other Hyundai designs in the recent past, like the 2020 Creta, the Chinese Verna or even the Aura for example.

The Elantra now looks aggressive and will certainly be not lost in the crowd of Vernas in India. Its distinctly different and will make a statement wherever it goes. So I guess Hyundai has tried to infuse something snazzy in to a car that was boring to look at most of the time. It should work in the US and other markets where the Elantra already has a decent recall. In India, well, I guess it does stand a chance, with the new Octavia being available only in Petrol, and the Honda Civic too never being a strong car in the diesel version, the new Elantra can be that D segment diesel sedan, if it does get a diesel option.

2021 Hyundai Elantra unveiled with striking looks and hybrid powertrain

Hyundai has taken the wraps off the 2021 Elantra sedan!

The 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra, now unveiled-2021-hyundai-elantra-2.jpg

Given that the current-generation model received a facelift not so long ago, the next-generation model, slated to go on sale towards the second half of the year, seem to be coming pretty early.

The designers at Hyundai deserve to be appreciated for trying and putting in a lot of efforts to stand out. Whether it stands out in a good way remains to be seen. This time around, the design theme is called "Parametric Dynamics!"

I feel this new Elantra will shake things up in the midsize segment where Honda's Civic and Toyota's Corolla are ruling the roost. With the American car-makers exiting the segment, the whole segment is available on a platter to the Japanese and Korean brands to gobble up.

Clearly trying to imitate Civic design, except Hyundai can't design a new car without connecting the tail lamps to each other.

Re: 2021 Hyundai Elantra unveiled with striking looks and hybrid powertrain

Well, I've to admit it, Hyundai is no longer what it used to be in terms of beautiful design, practical interiors and curves at the right places.

The fluidic Elantra was simply breathtaking when it launched, and its next iteration though a bit staid and boring, is the last of the great, well balanced designs left. The triangle headlamp variant currently selling looks awful to me.

This is no exception either, borrowing from the usual soulless European design, paired with sporty touches on what is, a family car. A disaster of what used to be to my eyes, the world's best looking car of all time.

I hate straight boring lines and quartz like panelling (always hated VW, Audi and Skoda for that), now with Hyundai and BMW who were known for curves before, also jumping into the bandwagon, clearly the boyracers or timeless brigade are winning the design argument.

re: The 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra, now unveiled

Is this a fastback?

I mean does the glass go up with the boot like the Octavia?

The current model here has limited space and if this is a fastback then this will definitely
have lots more of space.

re: The 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra, now unveiled

The front and rear does look good and the design will slowly grow on me just like it did with the Creta.
The only thing which looks overdone are the arrow shaped lines on the sides, cleaner lines would have looked better.

Very promising launch from Hyundai. I am looking forward for hybrid powertrain and hoping this one makes it to India. India needs more full hybrid options or plug-in hybrid options which cost less than 30 lakhs.

See how they spoiled a beautiful sedan in a period of time!

The front grill was bearable in i10, but when it reached Elantra, it is so horrendous.
