Very few considering they are launching the Q2 in Bangalore around now! A month late. Hyundai have i20's in showrooms already!

Audi, BMW & Mercedes retail car sales in November 2020

FADA has released the vehicle registration data for luxury cars for November 2020.

Among the luxury car makers, Mercedes led the pack with 897 units sold as opposed to 1,223 units in November 2019. BMW came second with 728 units, followed by Jaguar Land Rover with 199 units. BMW and JLR had sold 954 and 317 units respectively in November 2019. Volvo came fourth with 169 units sold, while Audi managed to sell just 27 cars (CBU models), down from 196 and 260 units respectively in November 2019. We don't have the exact sales numbers for Audi's CKD models.

Among the other luxury carmakers, Porsche sold 27 units while Lamborghini sold 4. Rolls Royce and Ferrari, both sold 1 car each. No Bentleys were registered during November 2020.

BMW Group sells 6,604 cars in 2020

BMW Group sales for the year 2020 have crossed the 6,000 unit mark. The carmaker sold 6,604 units which include both BMW and Mini models.

BMW sold 6,092 units, while Mini registered sales of 512 units. On the other hand, BMW Motorrad sold 2,563 bikes.

According to BMW, locally produced models like the X1, X3 and X5 accounted for 50% of the total sales. Demand for the X7 was strong in all regions.

The locally produced MINI Countryman accounted for 40% of the total Mini sales. The Mini Hatch and the Mini Convertible contributed over 23% each.

The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS accounted for over 80% of the total yearly sales of BMW Motorrad India. Demand for models like the R 1250 GS and GSA, F 750 and F 850 GS and S 1000 RR was also strong.

Mercedes sells 7,893 cars in 2020

Mercedes-Benz sold 7,893 cars in the year 2020.

In the second quarter of last year, Mercedes sold just 563 units. It registered a growth of 40% in the final quarter (2,886 units) compared to Q3 (2,058 units). According to the company, out of the total sales, 14% of the cars were sold through its online retail channel.

Despite the global pandemic, Mercedes-Benz stuck to its product strategy and launched 10 new models in 2020. These included the EQC all-electric SUV. The carmaker also started local production of the GLC 43 Coupe - the first AMG model to be built in India.

Mercedes has announced that in 2021 it plans to launch 15 new and facelifted products in the Indian market.

December 2020 sales numbers of Audi, BMW & Mercedes India

FADA has released the vehicle registration data for luxury cars for the month of December 2020.

Just like in November 2020, Mercedes-Benz led the pack with the most sales, followed by BMW and Jaguar Land Rover.

Luxury carmakers sales for December 2020:


  • Mercedes-Benz - 805 units, down from 1,058 units in December 2019
  • BMW - 604 units, down from 885 units in December 2019
  • Jaguar Land Rover - 183 units, down from 310 units in December 2019
  • Volvo - 123 units, down from 145 units in December 2019
  • Audi - 41 units (CBU), down from 286 units in December 2019
  • Porsche - 24 units, down from 32 units in December 2019
  • Bentley - 3 units, up from 2 units in December 2019
  • Rolls-Royce - 2 units, down from 3 units in December 2019
  • Lamborghini - 1 unit, down from 2 units in December 2019
  • Ferrari - 1 unit, up from 0 units in December 2019

It would be very interesting to know what will happen to these numbers when the premium Model S and Model X are introduced in India. (CKD to begin with maybe)

Even in 2016, in the US market Model S outsold the S Class or the 7 Series,6 Series and Audi A7/A8 combined. Thats an incredible feat. I have no doubt that that something similar may happen here, even if there is no supercharger network.

In USA some states, there was a $10000 rebate from federal and state government combined those days which is not available in India. That is almost 10-15% of the cost of model-S and 15-25% of model-3 based on version chosen. Also CKD/CBU might add additional cost in India.

So chances are less for that level of sale what was observed in USA atleast for model-S.

January 2021:

Luxury Car Sales remains in red and recorded a double digit fall of -39.5% YoY.

- Mercedes Benz remained the undisputed No.1 Luxury Car maker in India and recorded a Market Share of 39.2% in Jan’21. However; the sales fell by -28.5% YoY against Industry average of -39.5%.

- BMW India too reported a 47.7 per cent sales decline, from 1,345 units in Jan’20 to 703 units in Jan’21.

- JLR recorded one the steepest YoY fall and only 211 vehicles were registered in Jan’21. Its Market Share drop was the highest too (-1.7%).
