The Nissan Kicks 1.3L turbo petrol, launched at Rs. 11.85 lakh

Nissan will soon launch the 2020 Kicks in India. The SUV will get a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine which will be paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The HR13 DDT 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine produces 154 BHP and 254 Nm of torque. The engine uses the cylinder coating technology used in the Nissan GT-R's engine. It is claimed to boost efficiency of the engine, fuel economy and performance.

The X-tronic CVT that will be offered with this engine comes with an 8-step M mode. The gearbox is claimed to offer 40% less friction, which is said to improve fuel economy and acceleration response.

At present, the Kicks is available with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 105 BHP @ 5,600 rpm and 142 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel unit putting out 108 BHP @ 3,850 rpm and 240 Nm of torque @ 1,750 rpm. The petrol engine comes paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engine gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Only CVT? Or will there be a manual option as well?

re: The Nissan Kicks 1.3L turbo petrol, launched at Rs. 11.85 lakh

now this is definitely interesting. the Kicks is a very capable and handsome C-SUV, that was let down by lack of AT and insipid engines. this one should certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons, especially if priced competitively, vis a vis the seltos and the creta. Petrol is the flavor of the season and this may be Nissan's last chance to redeem themselves in an unforgiving market.

Now the smart thing to do for Nissan is to realise their reputation is in tatters and not price it on the lines of Seltos. That will be suicidal. Kicks is a very good looking and capable product that deserves to sell. So, price it at par with the XUV300 and the Nexon automatic. It will sell.

Looks like between themselves, Renault and Nissan decided to give the 1.3 turbo CVT a chance in the Nissan Kicks first (over Duster) as an attempt to kickstart it.It may also be the case that the Kicks chassis is able to handle the performance of this potential rocket much better than the Duster.

Kicks (and the Indian Captur) is based on the same chassis as the Duster.

Wise move. Duster is antiquated now and it comes up woefully short on features list. It still has the best suspension among SUVs but it can't be sold on that strength alone. Kicks, on the other hand, is still a new kid on the block. Not having sold in as many numbers as Duster did, Kicks is unheard of by most. Its second launch with some razzmatazz may go down as new launch with many. CVT paired to an engine with some serious numbers, mentioned above, will give Koreans a run for their money, provided Nissan doesn't mess up on price front. If it has the same suspension as Duster, that would be the icing on the cake. This will be first CVT car with a good engine. This privilege is generally reserved for DCT cars in India.

re: The Nissan Kicks 1.3L turbo petrol, launched at Rs. 11.85 lakh

I followed the Nissan Kicks thread and I remember how lackadaisical the response got after the pricing was announced. I hope they do price it competitively right from the start. Also, Nissan needs to overhaul its image and widen their service network.
I wish Team-BHP comes out with the review of the new Kicks.

re: The Nissan Kicks 1.3L turbo petrol, launched at Rs. 11.85 lakh

The 1.3L engine enjoys tax benefit over the 1.5L one. The numbers sound very impressive. The car suffered from a poor petrol engine. Now that is sorted and in addition has an automatic too. It's a good looking car, quite spacious with quality interiors. So this presents a terrific opportunity for Nissan to launch the car with a killer introductory pricing.

Nissan are already on the brink, so they should make a serious attempt to revive their fortunes. They need not look too far for inspiration (read: Renault). Written off by many not too long back, but how well they have bounced back.

Is it? I thought anything in 1.2-1.5L for petrol has same tax. And the benefit is applicable only fur sub 4m cars. This is why Maruti never launched Brezza in petrol before BS6, because 1.4L petrol in sub 4m car would cost same as 1.3L diesel one!

My bad, you are right. Petrol engines with displacement above 1.2L attract additional tax. About the sub-4m rule, I was under the assumption that all cars, regardless of category, had exemptions for having 1.2L or less capacity. Thanks for the clarification.

A great engine ruined by a numbskull selection of gear box!

It will serve as yet another example on proving
this thread. (Why it's important to offer the right engines + AT gearboxes + variants at the time of launch)
Right.

Still, good luck Nissan!

re: The Nissan Kicks 1.3L turbo petrol, launched at Rs. 11.85 lakh

Management discussion:

A: None of our products seem to attract the target. What do we do?
B: What if instead of following our competitors, we offer something new/different?
A: Great! What do you have in mind?
B: We could stop chasing the mass market and focus on performance enthusiasts? Maybe offer existing cars with powerful engines and maybe we use some GT-R engine coating jargon to lure them in?
A: Great. Let's go ahead with it.

"insert market research guy C"
C: The market above 10 lakh rupees demands automatics. Let's pair the powerful engine with a CVT to save money.

*A and B shake heads in protest but upper management approves Mr.C*

And Nissan's revival plan crashes before its last takeoff attempt.
