Kerala MVD to use Tata Nexon EVs for enforcement duties

The Kerala Motor Vehicle Department has ordered 65 Tata Nexon EVs that will be used for enforcement duties.

Kerala is said to be the first state in the country to deploy electric vehicles for enforcement duties. It has been reported that the electric SUVs will be leased out to the Kerala authorities by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL). Once the cars are delivered, the MVD will install speed radars and sirens on the cars.

The Nexon EV uses a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor which has an output of 127 BHP and 245 Nm. The company claims that the car can do a 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.9 seconds. The car has an ARAI certified range of 312 km on a single charge. Using a DC fast charger, the batteries can be recharged to 80% of its capacity in 1 hour, while an AC charger takes 8-9 hours to charge to 100%.

Re: Kerala MVD to use Tata Nexon EVs for enforcement duties

Nice to hear such an initiative . Hope that they will not end up like the electric bus. In October 2019 , Kerala wanted to have 1500 Electric bus. By December the intend came down to 300 . Presently 10 buses are in use . The union and the workers will find fault with range and charging.

A news link with respect to Electric bus complaints.

IMHO, they will need to add a much bigger battery pack that can handle long idling times with the A/C on, and have really comfortable seats that can be reclined. This will make life much easier for the MVD personnel as well as the motorists.

But yeah, an excellent initiative. And an awesome looking car that actually makes me want to switch to electric. I don't know about the range though.

The average MVD vehicle travels less than 50 kms a day, so no issues with range as it is 250-300 kms. And they usually are on for 3-4 hours max, so no issue with AC draining battery life. As you said, excellent initiative, even Police vehicles can be EV as they travel less than the average range in a day. At least the City Police station should have one.

That's quite a departure from the really mean looking styling on the earlier posted picture from a newspaper link. The design looks very bland and far from going well with the Nexon EV's blue theme.

However, it's certainly great to see that the initiative is materialising.

Re: Kerala MVD to use Tata Nexon EVs for enforcement duties

This was shared by a friend over Whats app. Kerala State Electricity Board installed this charging station. The mentioned "first" refers to the first one in Thrussur District.

Re: Kerala MVD to use Tata Nexon EVs for enforcement duties

Kerala government is putting in very good efforts for the promotion of EVs in the state. A year back KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) had installed an EV charging station on trial basis inside the state secretariat compound. This was primarily meant for charging government vehicles which were on a transformation phase to EVs. Now seeing the above posts, it is evident that there is good progress in this policy.

Here is a video of the EV charging station inside the state secretariat and a briefing regarding the state EV policies released a year back by the govt public relations department.

Translating some key points from the above video:

  • In accordance with Kerala State EV policy, the government is planning to have one million EVs on the road by 2022.
  • This charging station is presently for government vehicles and in future private vehicles will also be provided charging facility after fixing a tariff (From the previous post of the charging station at Thrissur, maybe this has already started).
  • KSEB is setting up these charging stations in accordance with the government's policy to promote electric vehicles.
  • Various government departments are migrating to electric vehicles and the above charging station at secretariat is intended to facilitate this transition.
  • This station is installed on a trial basis and the shortcomings and requirements identified will be rectified when setting up charging stations in the future.
  • KSEB is planning to install charging stations at fixed intervals on the national highway.

Re: Kerala MVD to use Tata Nexon EVs for enforcement duties

Thanks for the post. Really enlightening and great to know that Gods own country is leading the way with the use of electric vehicles and a charging station.

Tata Motors bagging deals with government agencies (Safari with the Army and Nexon with Govt of Kerala) maybe signs of better quality products from the Indian Brand.

Auto manufactures should invest in developing technologies which would help in faster charging of the vehicles than increased range on a single charge (comparing with your everyday mobile, mobiles which charge faster are in great demand). This may result in the products being better received by the public.

Going by the recent drive against any non-OEM mods, they might fall foul of their own rules with the sticker jobs on the nexons.

If this cost structure is right, the government will pay close to 57 lakhs for 1 vehicle with a driver over 8 years. In contrast, a normal police vehicle like the Bolero costs 10 lakh upfront, and about Rs.10 per km with a driver and fuel. If they drive for the 160k km that is mentioned as the battery warranty period, they'd pay about 16 lakh for the operation cost. Even if you take it as 20 lakh, the total cost of ownership would be about half of the EV. Fuel prices could rise to spoil this equation, but if we ignore that, paying double for an EV is perhaps not the smartest use of the very constrained state resources in these times. Hope I will be proven wrong and the government saw some other benefits to justify the initiative
