Yes, Versa to Eeco the breadbox

Heck, I loved the Baleno and the Kizashi but for the asking price from a Maruti at those point in time!
I don't think the SX4 or the Zen Estilo were flops as such, the A star maybe. Totally agree with the Brezza though. IMO the Grand Vitara was positioned in a different segment in terms of fit and finish than what the Brezza caters too.

Sorry, but can't really agree with these two.
-Apart from their practical nature, these two are different as chalk and cheese: one was and "mini-MPV" (or so Wikipedia says)/ SUV (?) and the other is but a jacked-up hatchback.
-The Duster is in no ways a successor to a Forester/Yeti, with its cheap interiors, poor finesse, inferior handling (relatively) and low equipment. It was a full class below. Only way these 3 are related is the SUV tag and the high price tag.
(just my thoughts. Nice thread though!)

Yes, Versa to Eeco the breadbox!
-The Esteem and Eeco are not the successors per se; they are actually reworked versions of their predeccesors.
-The Ignis would be the successor to the Ritz (only on the pricing front, mind you). TMHO the appropriate successor to the Estilo would be the Celerio.
-The Grand Vitara and the Brezza share nothing other than the name (and perhaps design); it isn't a successor. We're talking about a jump of atleast 2 segments and a price difference of over a million rupees!

Absolutely! The Tiago does offer great VFM and more car per car (Good thing it isn't popular in the taxi market though!)

Here are a few from my side:
-Chevrolet Forester ---> Skoda Yeti/ Jeep Compass: IMHO these are the only cars which can be called "spiritual successors" of the Forester. They have a lot of similar traits: premium pricing, similar dimensions, best-in-class road manners and sorted chassis.
-Maruti Zen ---> Maruti Swift (1st-gen): Premium positioning, slick gearboxes, revv-happy engines and the ultimate street racing tools and the Swift was a thoroughly modern upgrade from the Zen.

Re: Spiritual Successors to flopped cars in India

Interesting thread!

Off the top of my head I could think of a few:

Tata Indigo CS —-> Swift Dzire
Ssangyong Rexton —-> Alturas G4
Scorpio Getaway/Tata Xenon —-> Isuzu V-Cross
Hyundai Getz —-> Hyundai i20
Toyota Liva cross —-> Figo Freestyle
(Correct me if I’m wrong here, I feel Liva cross was the one that started the crossover trend here in the hatchbacks)

Re: Spiritual Successors to flopped cars in India

Not sure if this will sounds sensible but this reminds me of an old Army officer (Punjabi gentleman) buying TATA Mobile as a personal car for family of 4 (Mr and Mrs and two girls), I always wonder what he was thinking while purchasing that vehicle as a family car as the girls never seemed comfortable at the idea of going out in their own car and this was at the time when idea of owning a car was in itself a big deal.

The idea of TATA launching that vehicle as a personal vehicle to me never made any sense, but then came Xenon which although didn't see much success, did feel like a spiritual successor. TATA meanwhile did not abandon the form factor of TATA mobile and introduced 207 in CV segment which I thought did find success in altogether different category.

Re: Spiritual Successors to flopped cars in India

One that I could think of, on the hot hatch segment
Fiat Palio 1.6 --> VW Polo GT TSI
Both great cars, however the Fiat flopped in the sales chart whereas the VW set it on fire. Both enthusiast cars even today

It would either be the Ecosport, which opened up a crossover segment. Or the S-Cross/Creta which were 4m+ crossover like the Fusion. WR-V was simply following Ecosport footsteps.

Re: Spiritual Successors to flopped cars in India

I had bought Fusion and Forester brand new in 2005/6 period. Ride quality and interiors of Forester is nowhere comparable with Duster. The Forester is still with me in mint condition.
As for the Fusion, electrical and a/c problems led me to sell it after couple of years. Fusion had rather stiff suspensions and was not at all fuel efficient with its 1.6 Petrol engine.
Many of my relatives are Yeti owners. They have clocked more than 1.5L kms trouble free.
You will lose a lot of money when you sell cars which are not popular in India, but have a huge fan following globally.

I'm surprised, no one, literally NO-ONE has mentioned this gem, Suzuki Kizashi. Probably the successful candidate to this will be either the Altis or the current Octy.

Re: Spiritual Successors to flopped cars in India

While this thread is about cars that did have successors in the future, it reminds me of another segment that never had successors. The station wagons. Back in those days where cars were primarily used as people movers and had more utilitarian value, I never understood why station wagons never became successful in India. They would have suited the Indian families a lot more than a hatch or a sedan.

To name a few:
  • Opel Corsa Swing
  • Fiat Sienna Weekend
  • Suzuki Baleno Altura
  • Skoda Octavia Combi
  • Tata Indigo Marina

Altura and Octavia combi are my personal favorites. Also the Fiat Palio Adventure needs a mention as a car ahead of its times.

I know someone who had Ford Fusion who never wanted to sell the car because of lack of options in the market. This was more than 10 years ago. I'm so glad the Indian car market presently has so many options.
