ISI mark to be compulsory for car windscreens, windows and tyres

The Bureau of Indian Standards is currently in the process of bringing in legislation that will mandate the use of the ISI mark on the windscreens and windows of all cars. This will not only apply to cars manufactured in India, but also to those assembled here. Similar to the rule that states that all tyres sold in India have to be stamped with an ISI mark.

The import of sub-par windscreen glass, especially during replacements in the aftersales and service market, has become something of an issue, and with automotive glass-makers here able to deliver high-quality windscreens and windows, this could work well for the Indian industry in the long term.

The Bureau is likely to give carmakers a lead time of around six months before the rule is enforced. The current proposed date stands at April 1, 2021. While the legislation is not likely to apply to cars directly imported into India (CBUs).

This can be a spanner in the works for high performance tires. These are not made in India and it will be a problem for the companies to get every individual product certified given the low volumes.

When a similar rule was passed for helmets, it ended up disrupting the sale of high end imported helmets with complied with much stricter European norms.

The new rule is expected to curb the entry of low-quality glass into the country, especially in the aftersales and service market. While it would increase the overall safety standards, the additional certification could also increase the cost for car manufacturers.

The new regulation could come into effect from April 1, 2021. It is not likely to apply to cars imported as completely built units (CBUs).

My nimble mountain goat aka Tata Nano XTA 2016, comes with OEM Saint Gobain ISI marked glass all around, even the tiny one on the A pillar.
