Scoop! 2021 Toyota Fortuner brochure & tech specs

We have received new details of the 2021 Toyota Fortuner just hours ahead of its official launch.



As we have reported earlier, the 2021 Fortuner will be available in two trims - standard and Legender. Both versions will have the same 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 201 BHP and 500 Nm (AT variants).



For now, the Legender will not come with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive variants will get an electronic locking differential at the rear as standard.



Both versions of the Fortuner will come with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, connected car technology, 11 JBL speakers including a subwoofer, super suction based seat ventilation system and three driving modes - Eco, Normal and Sport. Besides these features, the Legender gets a powered tailgate with a kick sensor and wireless smartphone charger.

I just got off the call with Toyota Officials here, their staff was trained for the new launch and features earlier today and hence can confirm a few features -

Both versions will get uprated engine in AT while MT will be offered in normal facelift with 420NM torque

Legender - 4x2 AT only, kick boot open, JBL 11 speaker, wireless charger, full LED headlights,

Normal - 4x2 & 4x4, MT & AT(AT to get higher tune engine), JBL 6 speaker, DIFF Locks on 4x4

While the possibility of a 4x4 AT Legender in future cannot be ruled out.

I have a question, should i go ahead with normal 4x4 or Legender 4x2? I always feel a 4x4 gives me more peace of mind in road trips across varied terrains in India. My frequent runs are between Gurgaon - Lucknow but I do use roads as a preferred mode a lot.
Please note that i plan to keep just this vehicle with me for a few years, so need to think from all perspectives.

What an amazing start to 2021. A 200+ BHP Fortuner with a JBL Sound system. Oof! Long distance touring with this beast just got better.

Atleast they are offering the differential locks this time in the 4X4. Most likely only at the rear.

Wonder why they are not offering the manual 4X4 with the revised higher tuned engine, Probably the clutch in the MT cannot handle the 500 NM torque.

Now with 204 PS 2.8L turbodiesel, AEB; Starts from RM172k ( ₹ 31.3 lakhs)

The range includes the petrol-powered 2.7 SRZ AT 4×4 that is priced at RM172,244, while the diesel-powered 2.8 VRZ AT 4×4 goes for RM203,183. (₹ 37 lakhs)

2.8 VRZ gets the larger-capacity 1GD-FTV 2.8 litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine also found in the latest Hilux Rogue. Rated at 204 PS at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm, the 1GD-FTV bests the previous 2GD-FTV 2.4 litre unit that offers just 150 PS and 400 Nm

I have the same fear that the prices will go up significantly. Lets see, we will know shortly.
However there is a segment in India for which SUV means Fortuner. So doubt if at all the desirability of the vehicle will take any hit due to prices
At least the update does address some of the most desired features -
Greater Torque, Better ICE with CarPlay, Android Auto, JBL Speakers and Connected Car Tech.

Lastly not launching 4X4 AT in the Legender variant is a disaster, I am sure it will come soon. This might have been done to avoid price shock.
Also the manual owners would always feel short changed.

Not really. The torque ratings for MT have always been 420 NM as opposed to the 450 NM for the AT. The manual gearbox maxes out at that figure I believe.
